Meeting of the minds?? Hey coach Betty, let me play! The co-editors of the 1984 Lion wish to take this opportunity to express our feelings with the students and faculty of Blanchard High School. The theme for this years yearbook is “Leaving Our Mark”. We feel that we have left many great impressions in athletics and academic, and we will take many fond memories with us. With this being the Olympic season, our athletes have experienced the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. The Lady Lions softball team, after playing only four years, left the highest possible mark as they captured the coveted State Championship crown. This was a great highlight as this was the first girls’ team to reach this goal. The teachers of Blanchard High have played an important part during our school years. Teachers never get enough credit and recognition for all that they have done, so this one is for you, “Thanks”. We have grown to know and love many of you, and will never forget you! Before we close we would like to thank our parents for all that they have done throughout the years. We hope we can make you proud of us. To the students of BHS, we hope you have “taken a chance this year to get involved, to enjoy the best years of your life, and to leave behind your mark. The word “deadline took on a new meaning for a group of students this year. It was equated with hurry , “where’s the cropper,” “who's in’ the darkroom,” “How do I do this, and “help ! Led by Sr. editors Tami Loy Kelly Felton, the 1984 yearbook staff learned darkroom techniques, layout design, copy preparation and art design. The staff spent many long hours preparing a book of memories for BHS students and spent a lot of their free time raising funds to offset the price of the book. The 1984 Lion sports an innovative quarter-bound cover with embossed lions. As you turn through the year of '84, we hope you find where you left vour mark on BHS. After three years of hard work and dedication, the Blanchard Lady Lions finally made their dream a reality as they captured the coveted State Championship trophy. The road to the state championship was long, hot, and sometimes disappointing as the Lady Lions began practicing in the heat of August before school started and virtually rolled over their conference foes. As they had their starting infield picked on the All-Star Conference team. Kelly Felton, first base; Jena Queen, second base; Susan Winters, shortstop; Barbara McEntire. third base; Michelle Rutledge, pitcher; Tami Loy. catcher. The Lions picked up tough competition in the Norman tourney, playing only 4A and 5A schools and finished third. They rebounded. though, with a tough showing in the Tuttle Festival, defeating 5A state champion Putman West The road to the championship saw the Lions rolling up an offensive total of 56 runs while holding the opponents to a total of 6 runs in the final five games. When the Lady Lions began the state tournament, consisting of two games back to back, they realized if they defeated their first opponent. Kellyville. they would probably win the championship. Their nervousness showed as they moved closer to the end of the game, realizing the crown was within their grasp. Everyone held his breath until the final out, putting Blanchard ahead 6-4. It was all downhill from there for the Lady Lions as they rolled over Oologah 7-1. Years of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice had paid off, particularly for seven seniors who had given up their summers over the past years to reach their cherished goal. The long bus ride home from Tulsa was made shorter and sweeter as laughter mixed with tears and voices echoed that well-known song. We Are The Champi- B.J. McEntire was a big asset to the team. Dawn Dickinson did a dandy job of base-running. This is what you call deep concentration and dedication. Those who can. play; those who can't, coach. Coach Machado moved to Blanchard to get a taste of Oklahoma football, which he felt was the best in the country, and he along with the Lion team, got a good introduction to Oklahoma football. The Lions were hampered by inexperience, but under the leadership of the seniors and the new pride installed in the program, the team made great strides. Victories aren't always measured in the won loss column, and the Lions experienced many individual victories this season. Many players will return next year, and the Lions hope to leave their mark on Blanchard football. I’ve heard of togetherness, but I At least I thought I was sure! When the 1984 Lion Basebell season began, coaches and players were hoping to improve on last year's record of 17-16. And improve they did! The Lions captured the district regional crowns and made another trip to T-town where they fell in the semi-finals to conference foe McGuinness in extra innings. The young Lion squad, comprosed of only 3 seniors, got off to a slow start, and it looked like a repeat of last year. The Lions then won seven in a row; then seemed to stagger a little. Rolling to a first place win in the Newcastle Tournament and a second place in the Yukon Tournament, the Lions gathered 12 wins in 1 3 games before the play-offs. The Lions blew through the district tournament and seemed to be in charge as Shawn Orme had an outstanding game against Marlow in the region-als. However, the Lions had to go nine innings in the finals and it took a home run by pitcher Jason Walls to send the Lions on another trip to Tulsa. In the first Round of the state tournament, the Lions sacked Cleveland 14-2. The semi-final game against McGuinness was a thriller that saw both teams take the lead throughout the game. The Lions were down one run in the bottom of the seventh when Jason Walls hit a triple to score the tying run. It looked as though the Lions msight win then, but failed to score. Going into the ninth the Lions were again down one run until Todd Sorrels homered to tie it again; however, the Lions couldn't manage another run. In the eleventh the Irish went ahead by 3 and it looked dismal for the Lions. The never-say-die Lions scored one and loaded the bases, and when Brad Lof itn hit a towering shot, the fans held thier breath. One step from the wall the catch was made! Yocham The sophomore class of 1983-84 has made a definite statement in terms of achievement! They gave B.H.S. a football queen, a F.H.A. beau, and outstanding participation in all extracurricular activities. They also won third place with their float, “Chute the Rockets” — the only one with actual automation. For the first time since 1962-63 the Lions' Football Queen was a sophomore. Tabby Elam, their candidate, was 1983-84 football queen. The FHA girls knew value and selected Leslie Willard as their beau — another sophomore VICTORY! 75 G. Adamson R. Bain K. Batten K. Bonner S.
