B Brmsfield 1980 ANNUAL STAFF A RECORD GROUP As co-editors of the 1980 Lion we wish to take this opportunity to express our feelings with the students of BHS Our theme for our book is A Record Year and we feel we have recorded as many of the record activities as possible. Our school had the largest enrollment in high school in its history, with the graduating class of 1980 being the largest yet. Our athletic teams lived up to the term awesome ; the band displayed new abilities and sported new trophies; the organizations were the largest and most active in the school's history, and we added several new activities — girls' softball and drama Of course, much of this is due to the fine leadership we have in our faculty and administration. But also much of our school's success is due to the pride and involvement of our students. Ever ready to participate in activities and classes, this year's group of high school students have distinguished themselves in the community and in the state And even though it is sometimes only a few who receive the accolades, we all know there are many more BHS students who have worked and strived to make everyone proud of our school We have seen much happen in this short school year — the taking of the U S Embassy in Iran, the U S. hockey team winning an Olympic gold medal, and our summer team boycotting the Olympics in Moscow. Even though football games, homecoming, initiations, parties, classes, tests, and banquets seem all-important to us, we also realize there is another world out there that we will soon be a part of. Because of our parents, our educational experiences at BHS, and our pride in ourselves, we feel Blanchard students will be able to make the transition easily. Therefore, we hope you, the students, can find some mark that you left behind in 1980 — the record year. Even though they had to work in an auditorium with no seats, a small stage, no stage lights, no microphones, and no stage flats or props, the first year students under the guidance of Mrs. Joy Weber learned what it means to “break a leg. The students first performed short skits and then moved into one-act plays for the student body. They also entered their first contest and placed fourth. They made a good showing in the Weldton tourney, bringing home the second place trophy, and had several members making the all tournament team. They relied mostly on their experience and ability. The Lions have several returning state starters and lettermen and hope to have a better season next year. BASEBALL — 1980 CLASS 2A Front Row B Mitchell, C Winters. B Dennis. G Fletcher, T Bruza. Coach Vermillion Not Pictured M Weeks What's better than winning a state championship? — it's winning two in a row. And that's what the 1980 baseball Lions did on May 10 at Tulsa. The Lions returned six starters and several lettermen from last year’s state championship team, but no one knew what would be in store for this team. After winning the state championship in football, the Lions set a goal of yet another trophy for themselves. Practicing inside the gym during the cold winter months when it rained and playing in horrible weather all spring, the Lions battled all opponents, taking on many larger class schools to increase the competition. The Lions lost only six games and five of those losses were in extra innings. Many people talked about the weakness of their pitching staff and felt they couldn't last in the state tournament. However, the Lions won three games in the state tournament and three different pitchers got the wins. It was in the finals that the Lions showed their poise and confidence as they were behind 7-1 in the fifth inning. Mitchell had come in to relieve and had slowed Tecumseh down, but the Lions needed runs. Little by little, and never losing their belief in themselves, the Lions scratched and clawed until a double by Joe Jordan put the Lions back in business. In the sixth inning they broke the game wide open with hits by virtually every Lion. It was a great comeback, probably a tournament record, and it helped to set yet another record and another goal for the Lions, who were truly AWESOME. Seven seniors are lost to graduation and will be hard to replace, but they have left behind a legacy of pride and a team full of experienced and determined players for next year. The young lady lions, comprised of only one senior, had several members from the summer league slow-pitch team but they had to adapt to fast-pitch play, which they did well. In the play-offs the girls made a very good showing and will return many players for next year's team. ADMINISTRATION SCHOOL Frank Cuzalina Superintendent BOARD Solon Young, Joe Loy. Frank Cuzalina. When homecoming rolled around, the SENIORS worked together on their float of R2-D2 to receive first place in the homecoming parade. The Blanchard Band, of course led by a SENIOR, received for the third year in a row first place in the Annual Norman Christmas Parade During football season they kept the fans entertained by performing the most astonishing performances The girl roundballers, again led by six SENIORS, took the 3-A district championship . The boys had four returning SENIORS on the basketball team. The Drama class came alive this year for the first time in a long time, and once again the SENIORS were there to lead the way. The SENIORS kept the Blanchard girls' track team alive this year, providing four out of the five track stars. The baseball team having seven returning SENIORS set for themselves a goal of back-to-back 2-A state championships, which has never been achieved Of course, the 'Sultans did it!
