And, living in such a fast-paced society has shortened the distances and differences between people. Who then gets the blame or the credit for the product of a person - for what he does, how he lives, and what he believes? Teachers influence to a great extent by pushing, prodding, and opening doors - and we truly appreciate their dedication. But, there is one special group of people who have had an undeterminable influence on our lives - the senior parents. It is the parents who praise an accomplishment and accept a mistake, who encourage a future and allow a decision, who are proud after a victory or a defeat. They have cheered, laughed, applauded, hugged, praised, comforted, consoled, and encouraged. So, now it is our turn. For all the long hours working, for time and money spent, for the late suppers, for the washed uniforms, for the tears and the smiles - we thank you and dedicate to you, the senior parents, THE '77 LION. THE INSTRUCTORS Education does not mean teaching people what they do not know . . . It is a painful, continual, and difficult work to be done by kindness, by watching, by warning, by precept, and by praise, but above all - by example. A trip to the Taylor Workshop at East Central State College proved beneficial. The methods of cropping, enlarging, and reducing pictures were learned and the staff wrote body copy and headlines. There have been many long, hard, and dedicated hours invested in the making of the Lion '77. In spite of all the confusion, tension, and insanity that went on in the classroom, it's amazing how we ever met all our deadlines. But we did. Along with all the Chaos that went on in class it seemed like there were thousands of pictures, layouts, and other things lost at the worst possible time. But we made it through the year, and it is because of the people who gave a very large part of themselves, especially our adviser Anita Vermillion who probably gave us the most guidance and patience. I’d like to express my gratitude to all of the people who made the Lion '77 possible. The months of work put together for a final project were long and hard. You should feel proud that you were a part of a staff that did a great job. Thank-you ail for your dedication and for turning out a great yearbook. Good luck with next year's book, Mrs. Vermillion, and I hope all your new ideas work out. Sharon Einfeldt co-editor THE FUN TIMES 23 Top Row: Mrs. Vickers, sponsor: K. Riley, L. McRee, D. Dugger. G. The pep club, composed of 49 enthusiastic and hard working girls, had many money making projects, such as selling ribbons, buttons, mugs and homecoming mums, to raise money for the All-Sports banquet in April. The girls also worked hard to make the '76 Homecoming one of Blanchard's best. Led by sponsors Debbie Dunsworth, Leatrice Sluder, Virginia Vickers and Barbara Mize, the '76 pep club made many valuable contributions to the school and community, and helped make the '76 football season a memorable one. They had many money-making projects such as selling Blanchard Lions window stickers, running the concession stand at the baseball games, sponsoring a faculty baby picture contest, and singing carols at Christmas. They also placed Christmas trees in the High School and the Junior High and planted shrubs around the kindergarten. Using the money they made, they planned to donate some to the future community building and to have a ''Lion” painted in the middle of the basketball court. 27 Busy at the concession stand F.H.A. The 1976, 77 Blanchard F.H.A. Chapter held an exciting, eventful year with the annual initiation of new members. We attended the Sub-District Rally in October and the Grandmother Tea was a great success in November. Christmas caroling on a backfiring truck, a car wash, and candy and candle selling, were among a few money raising projects. The F.H.A. Sweetheart Banquet was held at Furr's Cafeteria in Norman where the annual F.H.A. Beau was crowned. We attended the State Rally in April, and to show our appreciation, a mother-daughter buffet dinner was held to end the year. OFFICERS: 1st Row L to R: J. Sneed - Recreational leader. C. Lions Scoreboard The 1976 football season for the Blanchard Lions proved to be an exi-citing one. The Lions staned the season with a hard-fought victory over St. Mary’s. After a tough defeat by the Purcell Dragons, the Lions fought back to beat number two-ranked Cresent. The Lions stayed in the victory groove by downing Heritage Hall 13-7 and shutting out Anadarko 19-0 in Homecoming. The Lions traveled to Velma-Alma the next week and in a second-half effort posted a 33-13 win. The last game before the district opener the Lions easily won over Noble. In district play the Lions fell short of their goal by losing to Newcastle and Tuttle but defeated Riverside. This ended the Lions’ season with a 7-3 record. This year's version of the Lion basketball team proved to be one of the most successful in Blanchard history. Their overall record was 21-5, which is the best ever for a Lion basketball team. The Lions placed 3rd in the Harrah tourney, 1st in the Newcastle tourney, and 1st in the district tourney. The Lions were ranked 4th in class 2A for most of the year. The Lions averaged 69 points a game to their opponents’ 57. This year's Lions were quite small compared to most of their opponents, but they used their quickness and intelligence to make up for their lack of height. The team was led by their five seniors, who were also the five starters. The team finished the season 29-9, losing in the state finals to Meeker 6-5 in a heartbreaking loss. The Lions placed second in the Mustang and Noble tournaments, each time losing by one run. But when the district rolled around, they were not to be denied again. They got sweet revenge over Purcell by blasting them 16-2. The Lions literally ran away with the regional tournament and played well in the state play-offs, a position never attained by a Blanchard athletic club. In the play-off games alone, Blanchard outscored its opponents 85-21. The Lions had eight seniors, five of whom started and one used as a designated hitter. All these boys added experience and leadership to the line-up and will be hard to replace. The infield was one of the toughest in the state and drew praise from many opposing coaches. Offensively, the Lions had eight starters hitting over .300. Many college and pro scouts indicated it was the best 2-A club they had seen. There was not just one outstanding player, but a whole team, and each complimented the other. Had they all been on separate teams, they would have each been recognized as super-stars. And to Blanchard fans, that is what they are. Coach has a talk with his players in the excitement of the state tourney. Baseball Seniors David Brooks. Sr. 2b. The BHS Girls track team spent a very worthwhile spring learning many valuable techniques in track. Under the excellent coaching of Miss Anderson and Mrs. Vickers, the girls worked hard in learning all phases of track and field events. The girls, predominantly freshmen, competed in several meets. Verda Spencer, the only senior, brought the only experience to the team. This best describes the year 1976-77 for seventy Seniors. The 1977 Seniors had great accomplishments in all fields - academically and athletically. Some of the highlights this year athletically included both girls’ and boys' basketball teams making it to the regional playoffs, and the girls going on to the area playoffs. One of the biggest thrills was the baseball team having an outstanding season, and going all the way to the state finals. Although considered one of the best classes scholastic-wise, the Seniors are also noted for having a lot of fun in everything they do. Some of these fun times included kidnapping Mrs. Shaw, building the float for homecoming, painting the water tower and numerous signs around town, dragging Main Street on bicycles, and floating down the Illinois River. Several members of the 1977 Seniors received academic scholarships from Universities and colleges. One member of the class received the Johnny Bench award and was also named to the All State baseball team. The Seniors have made many lasting friendships over the years, with 20 of the 70 class members starting to school together in the 1st grade, and going to the Blanchard schools for all 12 yrs. The 1977 Seniors made many contributions to the Blanchard school and community during their school years. Using their abilities and talents, they can’t help but be assets to the world as adults. 67 OhJ J AOOCJ fluMfp -JLlL 69 '-n.a'w pcax Hc tdL9LA % S 70 f TL Qc rilac (0c r (aAoacI 71 CJ yCL'n GUmj I Q f (Xf -A—' fy ruAIL - C l jjH f 72 Kw$}ui So r-oU iJjLhjClCk $ 3iyYlQJX. yr QA k a y onMs 73 The picture below is a picture of the twenty seniors that started to school at Blanchard and went to school there all twelve years. For the first time in several years a prom was also held, and this considerably increased the amount of money needed by the class. Some of their fund-raising projects were pie socials after football and basketball games, a raffle for a clock-radio, a spaghetti supper, and for the first time at Blanchard, the sale, manufacture and delivery of Valentine Candy-Grams. This last project proved to be one of the most interesting and profitable ones that their class has worked on yet. Some of their time during the fall was dedicated to the building of an eight-foot-tall Emerald City as their float for the Homecoming Parade. They won third place this year, and are looking forward to some strong competition again next year. Pres. K. Riley. V.Pres. - P. Morton, Sec. - J. Davis. Treas. - J. Rotter, Rep. - S. Wilson, Stu. As a group they won second place in the Homecoming parade with their float, Midway. They also were successful in raising money with their slave sale. If this is any indication of their capabilities, the sophomores can look forward to bigger and better years. SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS: Bottom Row: Kelly Tinkham, Sec’t; Radd Brooks, V. So, they elected Kirt Dillon as their class president along with other officers and student council representatives. Their football season was really hot with 9 wins and 1 loss and a great Pep Club to back them! Basketball and baseball were also a success. For another great kick off they built ”Gus for Homecoming. They didn't go it alone though; they had great sponsors and big help from Mr. Hale, Miss Anderson, and Mr. Algeo. Having a year's experience in junior high, they had more self-confidence as they participated actively in athletics, pep club, music, and student council. They were very proud of their Homecoming float, The Sting,” and placed first in the Heart Fund Valentine Contest with their candidates Perry Brooks and Sheila Brightwell being crowned Prince and Princess. With this background of success the eighth grade is hoping to make even more accomplishments next year. Bottom Row: Sgt. at Arms Todd Fugett; V-Pres., Lisa Starr: Sec., Jamie Brooks: Pres. No longer were there recesses, story time, and long lunch periods. Instead, there were six new teachers in six different rooms, five minutes to change classes, lockers to keep books in, new organizations to join, and a float to build. The first class project for the new students was to decorate a car for the Homecoming parade on which their candidate, Leigh Wilson, rode. The class, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Winfrey and Mrs. Stumpff, also planned a trip to the Kirkpatrick planetarium to see a film about Mars. All in all it was an interesting and educational year, both in and out of class. And the class of '82 moves on! r SEVENTH GRADE OFFICERS: Billy Kennedy - Reporter: Darren Yarbrough - Stu. Coun. The Jr. Lions excited area fans with such scoring feats as a 31-0 win over Tuttle, when Billy Hammon kicked a 35 yard field goal, a record at Blanchard Junior High. The most exciting game was against Noble, when the Lions roared back from 8-0 and 16-6 deficits to defeat Noble 37-22. Billy Hammon scored five touchdowns and 5 extra points, including runs of 60 and 70 yards, 105 yard kick-off return, and a 50 yard pass play. Hammon finished the year with 1200 yards. The last three games the Lions showed especially strong defense led by defensive end Joe Jordon. Other standouts were Steve Brooks, Chuck Harris, Gordon Foster, Arnie McCraw, Kerry Burns, Perry Brooks, and James Lambert. Brent Dennis, Maynard Spencer, and Mike Weeks also had good offensive years. Weeks rushed for over 500 yards and played linebacker on defense. Dennis was the team spark plug as the Lions ran out of numerous offensive sets, including the shotgun in which Spencer was the target of four touchdown bombs. Dennis was his best, though, on the option play. He sparked the team throughout the season despite broken ribs suffered against Tuttle. With such strong, quick, able-bodied freshmen moving to the high school ranks, Coaches Branch and Vermillion expect these boys to continue their winning ways for the Lions. 97 L to R: L. Faglie, E. Tournament the girls drew a hard match with Dale and lost out, but they came back to take first place in the Blanchard J.H. Tourney by first beating Washington and then defeating Dibble.
