It deals with the interrelationships of man and his immediate cultural and historical heritage. The term social studies refers to a field of study consisting of specific subjects: history, economics, government, geography, sociology, psychology. and anthropology. Seventh and eighth graders must take general social studies. Ninth graders take civics and Oklahoma History. There is a unit of vocations taught during the civics class. Tenth graders are required to enroll in Driver’s Education one semester. The Juniors must enroll in American History and they may take Democracy. Psychology and Sociology and Democracy arc offered to Seniors. 10 English Every student is enrolled in an English class each year at Andrew J. Terrell High School and Blanchard Junior High. Seventh and eighth graders are required to take grammar, literature, and spelling. Ninth graders arc enrolled in English I which includes one semester of literature and one semester of grammar. Tenth graders, too, must enroll in English II which includes one semester of grammar and one semester of literature. The Junior English curriculum includes one semester of American literature and one semester of grammar. The students who arc Seniors arc enrolled in English IV. English IV is a one semester study of grammar with an emphasis on composition and one semester of English literature utilizing Shakespeares’ MACBETH for further study of drama. Each year students make a specified number of book reports. English has the distinction of having more students enrolled than any other subject area. Here at Blanchard, we have two full time English teachers and three teachers who devote part of their class load to this area. 11 Business Education The only department at Blanchard public schools which is for senior high students only is the Business Education department. Business Education is designed for all students because it is a general education in consumer finance and business principles. It is also designed to leach students practical skills involved in office work. Courses include Typing I. Typing II, Shorthand I. Shorthand II, Accounting I, Business English, and Secretarial Practice. 12 Home Economics Home Economics is a four year course at A. J. Terrell High School. Home Economics in the Freshman year includes family relations, health and first aid, foods and nutrition, grooming, clothing construction, and child development. Sophomores study child development, clothing, housing, consumer education, foods and nutrition, and dating. The Juniors study clothing, consumer education, foods and nutrition, housing, child development, and relations. Seniors enrolled in Home Economics have advanced from making a simple sleeveless dress their Freshman year to tailoring and lining many of their garments. They are also required to make a complete layout of a home’s floor plans. They also study consumer education, foods, and prenatal care. Every spring the Home Economics Department sponsors a Spring Style Show in which every girl enrolled in Home Economics participates. We also have a banquet each year which is sponsored by the Future Homemakers of America. 13 Science The two goals of science at Andrew Terrell High School arc: (I) to cause the student to experience science as a practitioner of the discipline, (2) to constantly stress the common concepts which link all science. Science is required in grades seven through nine. Senior high students have a choice among biology, physics, and chemistry. The science program is set up so that students entering the senior high program have been in an inquiry program in junior high, and they will be in a position to interrelate abstract concepts of science during senior high years. 14 Industrial Arts Industrial Arts at Andrew J. Terrell High is used as an index for vocational development and as an interest painter for future educational plans. The courses are designed for skill development and for the enrichment of interest in the industrial arts area which might lead to further and future study in a specific vocational area — i.e.. drafting. The courses included in this department for the 1970-71 school year were Shop I, Shop II, General Shop, and two Drafting classes. 15 Mathematics The new concept of mathematics is based on the point of view of understanding, a broader mathematic vocabulary, correctness, more concise definition, and an idea of the structure of mathematics and the basic concepts of number and geometry. Mathematics is required for all seventh and eight graders. Freshmen through Seniors may choose from the following subjects: Composite Math. Algebra I, Plane Geometry. Algebra II, Trigononetry and Solid Geometry. 16 Vocational Agriculture A farm and ranch community has a real necessity for an Agriculture department within its school and we at Blanchard believe we have one of the finest in the state. The students at Blanchard have won top honors on their agricultural and livestock projects and several students have been State Farmers. The aim of the vocational agriculture department is to better understand and meet the needs of the agricultural community through education and through practicum. The courses offered in this department are Agriculture I. II, III, IV, and Farm Mechanics. 17 Library Science There are certain basic skills and knowledges beyond the proverbial three R’s which students acquire. One of the most important is the use of books and libraries. This skill is particularly needed when teaching is planned around the intensive treatment of a broad topic, as in the unit plan of instruction which is used by many teachers today. It is the purpose of the library program here to guarantee a minimum exposure to basic library procedure. Those who learn to use research skills successfully will find that they can satisfy curiosity, do independent reading, and enjoy books, recordings, and other materials without continued guidance of teachers and librarians. If this knowledge is acquired early in life, children will feel secure in their approach to school and public libraries and later in college and university libraries. This year, library science was offered to students as a class. The next banquet is the FHA Banquet and it is for the girls who arc members of the Future Homemakers of America, Blanchard Chapter, and their dates. The third banquet is the Junior-Senior Banquet which is for juniors and seniors only. The last banquet of the year is the FFA Banquet and it is to honor the FFA members and their parents.
