DOUGLAS GIBSON December 26, 1946 - June 25, 1968 Viet Nam (1968) This Blanchard High School Annual of 1968 is presented in memory of Douglas Gibson and dedicate to him and all other BHS graduates who have served, who are now serving and who will serve in the armed forces of the United States of America. Douglas was a graduate of Blanchard High School, class of '66. He was inducted into the service on May 14, 1967. On July 26, 1967, he married his high-school sweetheart, the former JoAnn Knox. He arrived in Viet Nam on November 4, 1967, and was soon to see heavy fighting. On June 25, 1968, at 2:25 p.m., Douglas lost his life in an attempt to rescue a wounded soldier in his squad. The squad of which he was leader had its mission to clear Hill 1561, only one of the many hills on which Americans have lost their lives while fighting on foreign soil. The dedication of this book is a small token in comparison to a man’s life. The Annual Staff presents it with humility and a challenge to all students of Blanchard that they be ever mindful that its presentation is made possible only because we live in a democracy, with the privileges of a free country, afforded to us by young men like Douglas Gibson. I wish to express my appreciation to Mrs. Stokes and the Annual Staff for the fine work they have done in the production of the 1968 Lion . I want to challenge each student of Blanchard High, Junior High, and the Elementary school to give of your best, in the future, for your community, state, nation, and the world. We adults have given you a world which is in a very turbulent condition and I urge you to set to work to improve the situation today wherever you are. George Bernard Shaw once said Some men see things as they are and say, ’Why?' I dream things that never were and say, ’Why not?' Would you dare to dream of a better world and say, Why not? A. J. Terrell - Superintendent In our yearbook we have recorded the events which we most want to remember. Through the efforts of this year's Annual Staff we will be able to review those memorable occasions in the years which lie before us. I would like to thank the student body and the faculty for making this year a very good one. With this type of cooperation between student body, faculty, and administra tion, our school will continue to improve in the educational endeavors in which we are now engaged. B. J. Cheatham - Principal 1 Breaking Ground for New High-School (1 to r) A. J.
