DOUGLAS GIBSON December 26, 1946 - June 25, 1968 Viet Nam (1968) This Blanchard High School Annual of 1968 is presented in memory of Douglas Gibson and dedicate to him and all other BHS graduates who have served, who are now serving and who will serve in the armed forces of the United States of America. Douglas was a graduate of Blanchard High School, class of '66. He was inducted into the service on May 14, 1967. On July 26, 1967, he married his high-school sweetheart, the former JoAnn Knox. He arrived in Viet Nam on November 4, 1967, and was soon to see heavy fighting. On June 25, 1968, at 2:25 p.m., Douglas lost his life in an attempt to rescue a wounded soldier in his squad. The squad of which he was leader had its mission to clear Hill 1561, only one of the many hills on which Americans have lost their lives while fighting on foreign soil. The dedication of this book is a small token in comparison to a man’s life. The Annual Staff presents it with humility and a challenge to all students of Blanchard that they be ever mindful that its presentation is made possible only because we live in a democracy, with the privileges of a free country, afforded to us by young men like Douglas Gibson.
