Douglas was a graduate of Blanchard High School, class of '66. He was inducted into the service on May 14, 1967. On July 26, 1967, he married his high-school sweetheart, the former JoAnn Knox. He arrived in Viet Nam on November 4, 1967, and was soon to see heavy fighting. On June 25, 1968, at 2:25 p.m., Douglas lost his life in an attempt to rescue a wounded soldier in his squad. The squad of which he was leader had its mission to clear Hill 1561, only one of the many hills on which Americans have lost their lives while fighting on foreign soil. The dedication of this book is a small token in comparison to a man’s life. The Annual Staff presents it with humility and a challenge to all students of Blanchard that they be ever mindful that its presentation is made possible only because we live in a democracy, with the privileges of a free country, afforded to us by young men like Douglas Gibson. Blanchard (July 6, 1968) 2 ADMINISTRATION FACULTY I wish to express my appreciation to Mrs. Stokes and the Annual Staff for the fine work they have done in the production of the 1968 Lion . I want to challenge each student of Blanchard High, Junior High, and the Elementary school to give of your best, in the future, for your community, state, nation, and the world. We adults have given you a world which is in a very turbulent condition and I urge you to set to work to improve the situation today wherever you are. George Bernard Shaw once said Some men see things as they are and say, ’Why?' I dream things that never were and say, ’Why not?' Would you dare to dream of a better world and say, Why not? A. J. Terrell - Superintendent In our yearbook we have recorded the events which we most want to remember. Through the efforts of this year's Annual Staff we will be able to review those memorable occasions in the years which lie before us. I would like to thank the student body and the faculty for making this year a very good one. With this type of cooperation between student body, faculty, and administra tion, our school will continue to improve in the educational endeavors in which we are now engaged. B. J. (Not Pictured) Weil, our great and glorious Junior year is over and now that we’ve accomplished the first eleven years with great vim and vigor, wcTe ready to reign the coming year as Seniors 69! In order to get a good class started off on the right foot you've got to first elect good leaders and the wise old owls of our class put their heads together with a “whoo” and finally came up with some answers. For President, we chose Holly Bridwell; Gene Kimbrell was elected Vice-President; Marsha Floyd Fox. Secretary; and JoEtta Whitford. Reporter. Of course how could we forget our great sponsors Betty Binyon Lewis and Travis Anthony. Our class was quite active and participated in many activities throughout the year. We had fifteen girls and five boys enrolled in Music. The Senior High Double Sextet was composed of four Junior girls. They were Teresa Wilson. DecAnn McKinney. Danicc McDonald, and Holly Bridwell. These same four girls, incidentally, took solos to contest and did quite well. Teresa rated II at District. DeeAnn rated I at District and a II at State. Danicc a II at District, and Holly a 1 at District and 1 at State. Danice McDonald served the Mixed Chorus as Treasurer and Holly Bridwell held the office as Secretary and Reporter. Eight of our boys went out for football. These eight were Jerry Pickard. Wayne Pierce, Wiley Pierce, Hal Dennis, Danny McIntyre, Gene Kimbrell, Ken McDonald, Larry Brooks. Jerry Pic ard. Wayne Pierce. Hal Dennis, Gene Kimbrell, and Larry Brooks were our pride as they made the main string. Of these boys, three went out for basketball Jerry Pickard. Wayne Pierce and Wiley Pierce. In baseball, Wayne Pierce put glimmer in our eyes when he received the All-Conference Award and Jerry Pickard received Honorable Mention. Three others including Wiley Pierce, Gene Kimbrell, and Larry Brooks were fine contributors to the 1968 team. Our girls going out for basketball were Sue Lee, Linda Lee, DeeAnn McKinney. Donna Huffman, and Holly Bridwell. We had two girls to play as forwards on the main string. They were Holly Bridwcll and Sue Lee. Our girls were quite active in FHA. Joyce East served as Treasurer, Linda Lee as Historian, DeeAnn McKinney as Song Leader. JoEtta Whitford as Parlimentarian, and Holly Bridwell as Secretary. While our girls were active in FHA, our boys did fine in FFA. Jerry Pickard served the group as Reporter and Danny McIntyre took good care of the chapter’s money in his role as Treasurer. At the FFA Banquet. Danny McIntyre received the Hog Production Award and Jerry Pickard won the Farm Mechanics Award. Academically we showed up fine! Joyce East carried away the American History and Woodmen of the World Awards. DeeAnn McKinney received the Typing II Awrard, Wayne Pierce won the baseball award, and Holly Bridwell received the Music Award Three members of our class were listed in the High School State Honor Society: DeeAnn McKinney. Joyce East, and Holly Bridwell. Joyce East received the Scholarship Award from the Junior Class. May it always be said that the 1968 Junior Class was a class of beautiful girls. DeeAnn McKinney was elected by the FFA as their sweetheart, and we chose Kay Shannon to be our Football Queen Attendant. Out of the three girls our class elected as Annual Queen Attendants we came in terrifically. Marsha Floyd Fox was chosen as Queen, JoEtta Whitford was selected to be the Princess, and Danice McDonald was First Runner Up. How’s that for picking winners? All in all we have had a doggone good year and we closed this year by giving the Senior class a nice banquet. Our theme was patriotic and all of the hard work put into this production showed up great. We ended the year with $592.00 and we feel quite pleased with ourselves, thanks mainly to Mrs. Lewis and Mr. Anthony who have been great sponsors the last five years Watch out for us this coming year! Looks like we’ve a lot ahead of us ... we hope. 16 Wanda Chapman Russell Clark Barbara Conn Hal Dennis Joyce East Marsha Floyd G. W. HIGH SCHOLARSHIP Betty McClain, Perry Dyer, Junetta Johnson SR. HIGH SCHOLARSHIP Kathy Bailey, Leslie Lauen, Nancy Hill, Joyce East 73 We are building a new school! A bond election held November 21, 1967, enabled us to begin a new high school building. It will be an underground building containing 10 classrooms with an above ground entrance. It will be airconditioned and can serve as a tornado shelter and fallout shelter. Future expansion to provide additional classroom space and a new auditorium is planned as an above ground addition to this structure. To go from this... to this.... in approximately five months is really something. The pictures below were taken as the building was being built and they show the different steps in construction of OUR NEW HIGH SCHOOL, up until the time that school was out on May 23rd.
