SOPHOMORE ACTIVITIES The Sophomore Class of the year 1953 can truly say they have had a successful and enjoyable school year. From our enrollment of thirty-six members we selected our officers as follows: Valeria Chappell, President; Jack Brooks, Vice President; Mary McCraw, Secretary-Treasurer; and Jack Jarman, Reporter. Mr. Maurice Pierce aided us as our sponsor. Early in September the class trouped to the Blanchard City Park for an evening weiner-roast. After the meal there were singing and games around a large friendly campfire. Pride in our lovely queen candidates is understandable. Somewhere in this annual you may see their charming portraits. They were: Joy Mac Starry, for Football Queen; Wanda Boettler, for Annual Queen; Carolyn Wilbanks, for Queen of Hearts. Joy Mac's escort was Thomas Allen, Carolyn's was Del Ray Freeman. We are proud of the showing the sophomore boys made in football. Del Ray Freeman, Haskell Huffhines, and Jack Brooks were in the starting lineup; while Paul Soward, Vernon Isom, Thomas Allen, and Dwain Brooks were members of the traveling squad. Coye Bridges acted as manager. Ten sophomore girls lent their support and their voices to the Pep Club. Sophomore boys and girls were fairly active in basketball. While sopnomore boys participated in track and baseball, the girls were occupied with softball and tennis. The Sophomore Class held a large percentage of membership in both tne Mixed Chorus and the Girls' Glee Club. Vernon Isom represented the class in the Boys’ Quartet, and Joy Mac Starry sang in the Girls’ Trio. Six of our more studious and ambitious classmates were in the Honor Society. They were: Dwain Brooks, Lois Lowry, Paula Richey, Wynona McMillin, Sadie Carner, Joy Mac Starry. James Saylors received the Shop Award; Joy Mac Starry the Homemaking Award and the Sophomore Scholarship.
