THE LION STORY 1952 — 1953 Presented By THE SENIORS of BLANCHARD HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR CLASS Blanchard, Oklahoma SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE The Annual Staff is to be congratulated this year on their efforts in making this year's Annual pleasing and complete. I am sure we all feel a sense of pride in the Staff's effective arrangement of materials and in their extent of coverage of school activities. May this year's book be a source of great pleasure to all of you in keeping your memories of high school associations refreshed, is the wish of your superintendent. Yours very truly. M.G. I am now the owner of Green Mountain Lodge. You may remember me as Peggy McKinney. There go Robert Winnard and Tommy Rodgers to town arguing as usual. Robert sells Farmall tractors now and Tommy sells Fords. They're still in competition. James McCutchen is with them, but he isn't doing much talking. He is the owner of the Oklahoma Publishing Company, and he just sits around and keeps his ears open for news. Here come Mr. and Mrs. Terrell and their wealthy son Byron. Byron and his cousin have taken over the Anderson Brothers Pipe Line Company, and it is now called Terrell and Potter. Well, there’s Don Whitson (now a recording artist with Decca records) and Gaylon Stacy (a five-star General who now directs his boys' Choir, the Singing Sergeants) knocking on the door of Cabin One, but why should I be surprised. They're doing the same thing they were fifteen years ago, courting their high school sweethearts, Mary Nell Grady and Jane Gilmore. Mary Nell is still Don's accompanist. She has made quite a name for herself in records, too. Jane now owns an exclusive girls' Camp in Colorado. The door of Cabin Four is open and I see John Lackey, Cook Puckett, Donald Rolen, Sedall Brooks, and Pete Hill sitting there playing poker. John owns a gambling Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Cook is his right hand man. I read in the paper the other day that Bud Wilkinson, Oklahoma University's Football coach, is resigning and that he chose Sedall to take his place. Donald Rolen is now the president of the Falstaff Beer Co., and Pete owns a Hereford Ranch somewhere between Tuttle and Minco. I hear he has a lot of cattle. There are Sam Echols and Donald Curry sitting at the dinner table talking about old times. They are both a success in their fields. Sam just finished a project of painting a life-size portrait of the President to hang in the White House. Donald, the tennis champion, won the Davis Cup just last month. Well, here come Melvin Crowder, Wayne Wilbanks, and Don Boettler, and their clothes are all wet. I guess they pulled the same stunt they did when we were here fifteen years ago. That is, tipped over in a canoe. Melvin Crowder is now with Merle Lindsay calling square dances. Wayne went to the Olympics last year to compete in the high jumping event. He is now widely known for winning first place. Don Boettler is now the notorious, steel-nerved shootin’ sheriff of Cole, Oklahoma. It's getting time to eat. I wonder where the rest of the girls are. 1 guess their bus was late. Everybody else is in the dining room, waiting to be served a chicken dinner furnished by Betty Harmon, who now owns Beverly s Restaurants. Here we are almost finished with our dinner, and look who is coming in singing' One Hundred Bottles of Beer on the Wall.' It’s Jackie Ramsey, Norma Harris, Doris Williams, Joan Burris, and Lavenna Williams. I guess they haven't forgotten the wide-awake club we organized on our Senior trip. Lavenna is a very famous model and was on Life's cover not too long ago. Jackie, Norma, Joan, and Doris are married now. Jackie married the new coach at Purcell, and Norma married Jerry Hale, who is a prominent engineer. Joan married Tubby Thomson, who is an engineer on a train, and by the way. she had her third baby not long ago on his train. Since they got married, she will hardly leave his side. Doris married the owner of the Pall Mall Tobacco Company and she looks very happy. Everybody is down in the Barefoot Club enjoying themselves, so I think I'll go down, pull off my shoes and get in the fun. SENIOR CLASS WILL I, Byron Terrell, will my wooing ability to Joe Bowling. At the beginning of the school term, the following students were selected as class officers: President, Gene Crowder, Vice President, Boyd Morris; Secretary, Beatrice McCutchen; Treasurer, Dale White; Reporter, Jimmy Richey. Mr. Starry was elected class sponsor. In the sport field Don Brooks, Hubert Bums, Jimmy Richey, Jimmy Kidd, and Eugene Huffines participated in football. Don Brooks won scoring honors of the team. Representing the Junior class in basketball were Jimmy Richey and Don Brooks in the boys division while Teda Isbell, Martha Thompson, La Dana Freeman, Donna Harmon, Nettie Williams, Ruth Dennis, and Harlene Huffman carried the colors of the girls. Teda Isbell was high point scorer for the season. When baseball rolled around Don Brooks, Jimmy Richey, and Gene Crowder took starting positions in the lineup. Don Brooks was elected captain of the team. While the boys were on the baseball diamond, the girls played softball and tennis. In the music department-seventeen juniors were enrolled in mixed chorus. In special divisions were these singers: Girls' Quartet, La Dana Freeman; Mixed Quartet, Martha Thompson; Girls' Trio, Teda Isbell. In the different queen races during the year, we were very successful in that the class worked hard for each and every candidate. Our candidate for Football queen, Barbara McDonald, came in a close second as the class raised a record setting total of $223.67. In the Annual queen race, we almost made the winner's circle as our candidate, Betty Bowling, lost by two votes. Now come the races that we are very proud to talk about. La Dana Freeman was named FFA Sweetheart and she received a beautiful jacket as a reward. At the Valentine Ball in which the whole high school took part, Teda Isbell and Jimmy Richey were elected King and Queen of Hearts. We presented our class play entitled You Can't Kiss Caroline. It was a very successful play and we enjoyed presenting it very much. On May 22, 1953, we honored the Seniors with the annual Junior-Senior Banquet. There was a western setting with songs and speechs. Everyone had a good ume while eating chicken and hot rolls like kings. In the special awards division these juniors received the following honors: Gene Crowder, Scholarship and Honor Roll: Jimmy Richey, Honor Roll; and Teda Isbell, Girls' Athletic Award. As the doors close behind us on our very happy and successful Junior year, we are looking forward to our last year in school as Seniors. When next fall rolls around and the school bell starts to ring, you can find us on the front steps rarin to go. Be seeing you next year! From our enrollment of thirty-six members we selected our officers as follows: Valeria Chappell, President; Jack Brooks, Vice President; Mary McCraw, Secretary-Treasurer; and Jack Jarman, Reporter. Mr. Maurice Pierce aided us as our sponsor. Early in September the class trouped to the Blanchard City Park for an evening weiner-roast. After the meal there were singing and games around a large friendly campfire. Pride in our lovely queen candidates is understandable. Somewhere in this annual you may see their charming portraits. They were: Joy Mac Starry, for Football Queen; Wanda Boettler, for Annual Queen; Carolyn Wilbanks, for Queen of Hearts. Joy Mac's escort was Thomas Allen, Carolyn's was Del Ray Freeman. We are proud of the showing the sophomore boys made in football. Del Ray Freeman, Haskell Huffhines, and Jack Brooks were in the starting lineup; while Paul Soward, Vernon Isom, Thomas Allen, and Dwain Brooks were members of the traveling squad. Coye Bridges acted as manager. Ten sophomore girls lent their support and their voices to the Pep Club. Sophomore boys and girls were fairly active in basketball. While sopnomore boys participated in track and baseball, the girls were occupied with softball and tennis. The Sophomore Class held a large percentage of membership in both tne Mixed Chorus and the Girls' Glee Club. Vernon Isom represented the class in the Boys’ Quartet, and Joy Mac Starry sang in the Girls’ Trio. Six of our more studious and ambitious classmates were in the Honor Society. They were: Dwain Brooks, Lois Lowry, Paula Richey, Wynona McMillin, Sadie Carner, Joy Mac Starry. James Saylors received the Shop Award; Joy Mac Starry the Homemaking Award and the Sophomore Scholarship. FRESHMEN Johnnie Lee Bowser O. T. Our class officers were as follows: Eugene Burns, president; Harvey Puckett, vice president; Harrylou Daniel, secretary and treasurer; Pat French, reporter; Mr. Michael Dwyer, sponsor. In October we held a class party in the English Room in which everyone took part. Gay were the games and singing; and dainty were the refreshments, which were served at the close of the party. Soon December found us busily preparing for a Christmas party. We exchanged gifts which were toys for smaller children. These were boxed and sent to the Lions' Club for children who were unfortunate. Later, February rolled around, and everyone was getting ready for the big Sweet Heart Dance given by the Mixed Chorus. From our class the attendants of the King and Queen of Hearts, were Reford Bassett and Pat French. All are very happy to say Patsy Ruth Freeman was our queen attendant for the annual and candidate for the FFA Sweetheart. Nearly every freshman pupil participated in athletics. Four of our boys went out for football, while fourteen freshman girls cheered in the Pep Club. The Junior High Basketball Team was made up almost entirely of freshman boys, while twelve girls were on the girls' team. The girls are proud to announce they won a runners-up trophy at the Tuttle Tournament; and they were runners-up in the County Tournament. High point girl for the season was Kay Ewing with 170 points. As our Football Queen Attendant, we chose Harrylou Daniel. The night of the coronation, she was there, looking beautiful in a cool, baby blue formal, with her escort, Eugene Burns. Freshmen were also interested in musical activities. Most of the girls took part in Glee Club and Mixed Chorus. There was only one freshman boy, Harvey Puckett, who participated in Mixed Chorus. Harrylou Daniel is a member of the Girls' Trio and is one of the piano accompanists for the Music Department. Everyone in our class is very proud of a member of our room, Harrylou Daniel, who took part in a piano contest at the Oklahoma College for Women at Chickasha, Oklahoma. She competed with five hundred other piano students and is one of two people chosen to go to State in April. Two members of our class, Johnnie Lee Bowser and Pat French, were on the annual Staff. We feel our freshman year has been very successful, and we hope our following years will be even better.
