SOPHOMORE ACTIVITIES We think that we have lived up to the title of Sophisticated Sophomores this year, for we have had our fingers in every thing. After having been guided through a very successful year of activities, we are very happy that we elected Don Whitson as president, Jane Gilmore as vice president, Gaylon Stacy as reporter, and Mr. • Knepper as sponsor. Our vice president, Jane Gilmore, was representative on the Teen Town Council; and our parliamentary activities were further extended by the election of Jackie Ramsey as treasurer on the Teen Town Council and the selection of John Lackey and Donald Curry as representatives. Every Queen race held this year felt the keen competition of the Sophomore group. Jane Gilmore, our choice for football queen, ran a close second to the successful candidate. Mary Nell Grady was our candidate for Sweetheart of the F. F. A. We entered Peggy McKinney for the honor of Annual Queen, and Jackie Ramsey was selected Sweetheart for the Boys' Quartette. We are very proud of Mary Nell, who was given the music award for the school year. Jane Gilmore was a member of the Girls' Quartette; while Don Whitson, Gaylon Stacy and Sam Echols sung in the Boys' Quartette. Twelve Sophomores were in the Mixed Chorus. Don Rolen made both the offensive and defensive teams in football, while Don Whitson played on the defensive team. Several other boys in the class took part in both football and basketball. Norma Harris and Lavenna Williams were two forwards on the main squad in girls’ basketball, while Jane Gilmore, Joan Burris, and Betty Harman also lettered in the sport. Many of the Sophomore girls were members of the Lionette Pep Club. Jane Gilmore served as vice president of the Club, and Mary Nell Grady completed her second year as cheerleader. Sam Echols, Donald Curry, Jacqueline Ramsey, Jane Gilmore, Joan Burris and Peggy McKinney were on the Honor Roll. Jean and Sam tied for class scholarship honor. Alfred Hill won the State Corn Raising Championship against a competition of ever three thousand boys. We are proud of our class, and you can easily see why.
