Text from Pages 1 - 90 of the 1951 volume:

Dear Students, Teachers and Friends: As you procede through this Yearbook, I know that you will agree with me that this bock is an improvement over our earli-3 er attempts at publishing a yearbook. The Annual Staff is to be complimented on the enthusiastic manner with which it has attacked the problem of publishing the yearbook this year. You students are to be commended for your fine co-operation. I know I only express your appreciation when I say Thanks to the many advertisers in this year's annual. I congratulate the Annual Staff on giving us our most complete book, and the students on receiving such a splendid annual that depicts a broader view of the activities of our school. Yours truly, I To The Students of Blanchard High School: Nineteen hundred fifty-oneJ During the first half of the twentieth century keen minds have developed the automobile, radio, television, atomic energy and many other inventions. I want to challenge you to develop the art of living to the extent that the next half century will see mental and spiritual development keeping pace with the material advances made during the past fifty years. We have spent much time and effort to bring you a better annual this year. But if you enjoy the Lion of '51 our time and effort has been well-spent. We take this opportunity to thank the student body, faculty and advertisers for their generous help and co-operation in making this annual one which will, in the future, bring golden memories of many happy hours. It is three o'clock and no one can know how much I dread the next case because of the sentiment involved. Next to me sits my client, Mrs. Mona Raye Richey, my old-time pal, who is suing her husband. Jack, a brilliant surgeon, for divorce. I have heard rumors that Jack has been seen in several night clubs with June Swanson, a librarian. By the way, June also was a fellow graduate of mine. Maybe my doubts are groundless, and I can reconcile them, for only yesterday I got Curtis Brown, a notorious bootlegger, off with only two years. I didn't want to defend such a culprit; but when Avanna and the twins looked at me with pleading eyes, I just couldn't refuse. As I look over the court room, I can scarcely believe that so many of my fellow seniors have come so far to witness such an unfortunate occasion. I certainly didn’t think that L. C. McCutchen would leave his lavish fishing resort even for a minute. There on my right is Betty Conn, a successful career girl. I have heard it said that she is an excellent stenographer for an important insurance agency. Ah! and in the reporters' box, Venson Trout, the ace reporter, sits poised and ready for the trial to begin. Venson reached the peak of his fame when he covered an airplane crash in which Harold Sorrel, co-pilot, rescued twenty passengers, among whom was Norma Bowring, air line hostess. Now Venson has settled down to the quiet life of covering trials since he received a leg injury while covering a gun battle between Arlis Clement, a great policeman, and a bandit. (Arlis also graduated in ’51.) Speaking of Arlis, I read in the newspaper that he recently turned down an offer from Sam Andrews, who has risen to the height of District Attorney, for a high position in the F. B. I. Arlis insisted that he would rather stick to his beat. Look who just walked in! Miss Janis Cowan, who is now a famous dress designer. Just think! She came all the Way from her studio in Paris to witness this important trial. Well, enough of my senior buddies. The trial must go on. Mack Stacy, the dignified judge, has entered and has called for order in the court. Thank goodness, he and Fannie Jo will never break up. Who would want to, with all those cute redheaded kids. While we’re on the subject of red-headed kids, Pat and her coach husband, Red, have two of their own. I had lost track of Pat and Red; but while visiting Mary Ruth, Dalton and their ten rambunctious boys, last week, Mary Ruth told me that Pat gave up her career as home economics teacher nine years ago. Even though one of the couples of '51 is trying to separate with a divorce, many of the couples are still happily married. Just yesterday I met Neomi and Johnnie Dunlap strolling down Fifth Avenue. They have just returned from a cruise with the McKinneys, Jimmy and Margaret. They all seemed to have had a wonderful time, enjoying the many conveniences which Jimmy has invented for his special yacht. I knew Jimmy's mechanical mind would bring him millions. Dale Soward has just released his Sowardite, which is, in fact, the fastest thing on the road. Did I say road? Continued from page 9. Well, of course, I meant on the road, in the air, and on the sea. I laughed at Bobby Freeman and Gene Harrison when they started their rabbit business. But, now, their famous slogan, Rabbits from Coakamonga to Timbucktoo, rings through the country. George Brooks bought several shares in their corporation way back in 51; and now La Moyne and he, still lazy as ever, relax in their palatial home in Palm Beach. It is five minutes until the starting time of the trial, and Jimmy Dennis, another '51 senior, is coming down the aisle. I imagine you already know that Jimmy was recently appointed Secretary of Agriculture. Jimmy brings to my mind another dear old friend, Betty Binyon, who only last week honored Jimmy with a dinner party. I suppose that it would be easy.to win a case for that very rich socialite. Next time she's in a night club brawl, I'll try to help her out. There is a peculiar thing about that dinner party. A reunion of some kind must have been taking place for a number of '51 seniors were present. Even the speaker for the evening was an old pal of mine, Mary Terrell, who has become famous for her essays and books she has written. Distinguished guests at the dinner were Gladys Young, congresswoman, and several army officers and their wives. Familiar names among these army personnel were General and Ramona Huffman, General and Mary Triplett, who used to be known as Mary Whitaker and Major and Sue Wilbanks. But, I must stop this reminiscing and snap back to reality. Great guns, it's 3:30, the starting time of the trial. But, alas and alack, there is no more space!! JUNlORS JUNIORS JUNIOR ACTIVITIES We, the Junior Class of 1950 and 1951, have had a very busy and successful year. We began the year by electing Donald Bowser, president; Dorothy Thomson, vice president; S, T. Flowers, treasurer; Anne Roberson, secretary; La Moyne Pybas, class reporter; and Gordon Vaughan, sponsor. Because Anne dropped out of school, we elected Maxine Creswell as secretary for the second semester. Into extracurricular activities we have entered whole-heartedly. During the football season, we thrilled to many passes Don Waggoner hurled. Also, we enjoyed the great work of the other boys from our class; Donald Bowser, Pruitt Lewis, Amos Mahurin, S. T. Flowers, and Ray Ward displayed talent on the football field. There are a number of the girls in the pep club, and Jo Ann Bingaman was elected one of the cheerleaders. During basketball season, we often held our breath until Ray Ward made one of his famous shots; we marveled at some of the plays made by Donald Bowser, S. T. Flowers, and Pruitt Lewis. We would all like to pat Dorothy Thomson on the back (gently). She was the only junior girl on the girls’ basketball team. The Juniors prefer brunets for Queens. Jo Ann Bingaman, one of our charming brunets, was nominated for Football Queen of 1950. Kathryn McDaniel, brunet also, was nominated as the Junior contestant for Annual Queen from our class, and Dorothy Thomson, definitely brunet, was nominated candidate for F. F. A. Sweetheart from the Junior Class. If that’s not proff that we like brunets, we are not the Junior Class of 1950 and 1951. We earned money in various ways for the Junior-Senior Banquet given late in April in honor of the Senior Class. We received part of the money earned in the Queen race; we worked in the concession stands during basketball season; and we gave a play. All of the class worked very hard to produce our play, Murder with Orchids. ” Also, we were allowed one hobo-day. The money earned was used to finanace the trip taken by the Junior Class. During this busy year we had five outstanding students who made the honor roll. They are: Anne Roberson, Dorothy Thomson, S. T. Flowers and Donald Waggoner. Anne Roberson received the scholarship award this year for the Junior Class. We are looking forward eagerly to next year, and hope that it will be as much fun as this year has been. After having been guided through a very successful year of activities, we are very happy that we elected Don Whitson as president, Jane Gilmore as vice president, Gaylon Stacy as reporter, and Mr. • Knepper as sponsor. Our vice president, Jane Gilmore, was representative on the Teen Town Council; and our parliamentary activities were further extended by the election of Jackie Ramsey as treasurer on the Teen Town Council and the selection of John Lackey and Donald Curry as representatives. Every Queen race held this year felt the keen competition of the Sophomore group. Jane Gilmore, our choice for football queen, ran a close second to the successful candidate. Mary Nell Grady was our candidate for Sweetheart of the F. F. A. We entered Peggy McKinney for the honor of Annual Queen, and Jackie Ramsey was selected Sweetheart for the Boys' Quartette. We are very proud of Mary Nell, who was given the music award for the school year. Jane Gilmore was a member of the Girls' Quartette; while Don Whitson, Gaylon Stacy and Sam Echols sung in the Boys' Quartette. Twelve Sophomores were in the Mixed Chorus. Don Rolen made both the offensive and defensive teams in football, while Don Whitson played on the defensive team. Several other boys in the class took part in both football and basketball. Norma Harris and Lavenna Williams were two forwards on the main squad in girls’ basketball, while Jane Gilmore, Joan Burris, and Betty Harman also lettered in the sport. Many of the Sophomore girls were members of the Lionette Pep Club. Jane Gilmore served as vice president of the Club, and Mary Nell Grady completed her second year as cheerleader. Sam Echols, Donald Curry, Jacqueline Ramsey, Jane Gilmore, Joan Burris and Peggy McKinney were on the Honor Roll. Jean and Sam tied for class scholarship honor. Alfred Hill won the State Corn Raising Championship against a competition of ever three thousand boys. We are proud of our class, and you can easily see why. We have taken part in almost all high school activities. Our class officers are as follows: Donald Brooks, president; Jaunice Gordon, vice president; Gene Crowder, reporter; Martha Thomson, secretary and treasurer. Mr. Nowlin, our sponsor, has helped our year to be an enjoyable one. Jimmy Richey is our representative to the Teen Town Council. A few of our girls who were in Glee Club, found music very much to their liking, and several freshmen have enjoyed being in the mixed chorus. Donald Brooks and Eugene Huffhines were the only freshmen to get suits in football; and Donald, who played left end, made the starting line-up. Most of the other freshmen boys were on the Junior High Football Team, while the Junior High Basketball Team consisted mostly of freshmen. The Junior High Girls' Team really brought us distinction. In the McClain County Tournament, their victories over Dibble and Washington brought them to the finals. However, the final game ended with Purcell 22 and Blanchard 19. Although we lost this decision, we are proud of our sportsmanship trophy, which was presented to us at the game. All the freshmen girls that go out for basketball went to the tournament except Dona Harmon, who was entered in the senior high game. Out of a group of forty-eight, only one, Gene Crowder, made the honor roll. We expect to do better next year. We have had a wonderful year and wish to make the next ones even better. r 'S •m •••■a fiiiSSfc IfiKbf iS; £?f :: :••• EIGHTH GRADE Carren Bobby Billy Sadie Valeria Burris Cagle Capps Carner Chappell Vina Lou Dorothy Wanda David Del Raye Clanton Cotten Cotner Foster Freeman Victor Donald Haskell Vernon Jackie Gambell Hooper Huffines Isom Jarman EIGHTH GRADE Jimmey Ledford Paul Soward Letha Lewis Lois Jane Lowry Bernard McConnell Eula Periman O 's Lois Sorrell Dickie Tankersley Carolyn Wilbanks Lou-EUen Winnard Patsy Winnard ) Wendall Young James Andrews Naweeta Bowring Johnnie Bowser Charles Brightwell Ugene Burns Barbara Capps Wanda Capps Virginia Cates Wayne Chapman Wayne Coggins Jannett Crowder Harry Lou Daniel Sharon Kay Ewing Patsy Ann Freeman Patsy Ruth Freeman Patricia French G.
