Anyway, we decided to mice our class one which will lone bo remembered. During tho first six weoks of school, under the direction of our sponsor, A. J. Terrell, we gave a pie and box supper, and in tho carnival sponsored by tho Junior CI03S we directed a ’’Country Store. Both activities were quite successful. One of our big thrills came in November when we received our class rings, pins, and pendants. In a short tino wo found Patsy Anthony (frc3hnan) wearing J. W. Burlison’s ring and Phyllis Bincaman (sophomore) wearing Ellis Wigley'o. Then there was that day of doy3 when v;c all came to school with our hair curled and wearing our best smiles because it was our turn to poso bofore the camera. Behold the record of this on another page of this annual. V e published four editions of tho Blanket, our school paper. The first edition was tho senior Christmas present to the student body. Other editions celebrated Valentine Day and Easter Y o shall long remember tho exhilarating lift that our spiritB experienced when Ellis Vfigley or J. Y. Burlison tore down the basket boll court in 3ome outstanding ploy to land the ball in Blanchard High’s basket. The senior members of this year’s Glee Club were: Kathryn Boyless, Betty Caldwell, Tijuana Roberson, Ifery Shelton, and June xonkersley. Kathryn Bayless was soloist for the Glee Club and a member of tho girls quertet and orchestra. JUNIORS Solon Young, Jack Mchey, liorraa Combs, Iiarvey Hale. Barbara Tuttle, Louise Perlman, Perry Joe Stacey, Joseline .at-kins. John Edward Isbell, Betty .. son, Irene V.ilmeth, Tony Burris. LaN’elle oinnard. Bill Hill, Geneva noots, Jimma Lee Cagle. Bronelle Lewis, Orlan Brooks. JUNIOR ACTIVITIES The Class of 1947 lies passed its third high school year with a fall measure of success and happiness, under the direction of Solon Young, class president, Norma Jean Combs, secretary, ana Joach Joe King, sponsor. Early in the year, the Juniors sponsored a carnival, a 6ay affair, which was a success from a social as well as a financial standpoint. For v.ecks af'.erv.ard, the members of the class went about feeling like real financiers, for they had by their own efforts amassed the staggering sum of $190.00. Moreover, their nominee for Carnival Q,ueen, Norma Jean Combs, was elected by a good majority. Attended by the other queen contestants,Horma Je©n was crowned in a beautiful ceremony at the close of the carnival. Orlan Brooks had the distinction of placing the crown unon toe queen s head. Under the direction of Superintendent starrv, the Juniors presented their annual play April 5, 1946. The play chosen was Here Comes Charlie”, a comedy with a well organized plot. For v.ecks before this play was given,Orlan Brooks..went «bout with the unkempt appearance of a young man who had forgotten to shave. A three weeks growth of red beard enabled him to look the part of Uncle Alec, a leading char cter of the play, whom he portrayed with much skill. Equally successful wes Betty V atson in her role Charlie”,the crude, unpolished girl from the hills, who became the ward of Larry Elliott, forcefully represented by John Isbell. Other members of the cast were: Aunt Fanny, an arrogant person who dominated Larry’s household, portrayed by Louise Perimon:Vivian Smvthe-Kersey, by Norma Jean Combs; Caroline Smythe-Kcrsey, Vivian’s mother, by d ima we uagie; mortimer Smythe-Kersey, Vivian’s brother, by Solon Young;, and a comical Irish couple, Nora Malone, Larry's coo;:, and Tin mccrill, a policeman, oortrayed by Geneva Loots and Harvey Hole, respectively. The Juniors have done their part to a3sisu in this year's activities. Geneva Roots is a member of the Girls Gl;e Club. John Isbell, Harvey’ Hale, Orlan Brooks, and Perry Joe Stacy gave their best on the basketball court, and look forv.ard to forming the nucleus of our senior basketball team next year. Bill Hill, John Isbell, Orlan Brooks, Tony Eurris,Harvey Hale, and Perry Joe Stacy formed a stable sextet on the baseball team. Louise Periman and Norma Jean Combs hove beer, faithful assistants in the library. Jack Richey did good work as the Junior Class Representative to the Studont Council. Sharing in scholarship honors, two members of the Clas3 of 47 have won distinction. Louise Periman has been a member of the National Honor Society each year since she entered high school. Louise also won the class scholarship medal in 1944 and 1945. Juniors who belong to the National Honor Society for 1946 are: Norma Jean Combs and Louise Periman. Noto: The fact that we left Jack Richey's name off the play cast ibove is no proof that we did not enjoy his performance. The Annual staff sincerely apologizes to Jack, who played the part of ’cd Hartley, Larry's college pal. sponsor----- Front now: oecond now: 1 h i rd . hov.: fourth now: fifth now: . Fill, :eorge Dennis, holey Kichey, Delmas Erwin, and Kent Thornton wear two basketball stripes on their sweaters; and Kent Thornton, George Dennis, R. J. Hill, and Delmas Erwin are members of the .baseball team. Social activities for the year'included two colorful parties, one of which closed with Is, Starry and Miss Champlin dismayed at the fact that they had unwittingly painted their faces to resemble those of Indian warriors. Equally as exciting as our parties were the vigorous campaigns we waged in an attempt to elect 3etty Lou Puckett, our candidate for Annual Queen, and Phyllis 3ing.a-mon, our candidate for Carnival Queen. fe lost in some contests this year, but we comfort ourselves in the fact that There’s a better year comin.-J” FRSShuAN CLAoS—jPONdOR, I... 3. The Girls Quartette, this year, consists ofLaVon Bwanson, Kathryn Bayless, Pet3y Anthony, and Fern iiiche.,. They have sung at various school affairs and ha performed at the American Legion Auxilary dinners. The Quartette entered the District Music Contest and also ratea Good . During the year, Blanchard School has had among its pupils fifty-five Girl Scouts, including Brownies, Intermediate Scouts, and Senior Scouts. BROV NIES, TROOP THREE Each Wednesday afternoon, under the direction of Mrs. Starry, the Brownies have met for work and play in the Homemaking Room. Those who lingered in the halls after four o’clock on such days will remember the happy sound of children s voices and the patter of little feet, as the Brownies scampered to and fro building the most complete of doll houses, or making cookies for a tea. i;rrERT02DIATES, TROOP 0HE Troop Number One consisted throughout the year of twenty-two girls who met each Monday afternoon from four to five: y. Each mooting period was divided into three sessions; a business meeting, a period for work and activities, end short period for play. Members of thi3 troop are organized in two patrols. Girls from the Junior High School constitute the Cardinal Patrol, and piris from the grades make up the Flag Patrol. Members of the Cardinal Patrol havo attained tho rank of Second Class Scouts, and havo won several badgos in their progress toward First Class Scout rank. High lights in their year’s activities havo been the swimming program under the direction of the student assistants in the Department of Physical Education at 0. C. and a program o-one act plays given as a culmination to activities leading to a stage craft badge. The plays given were The American Beauty and Buzzie’s Babies . As the school year draws to its close oleven Scouts are happy in the thought that they have reservations to attend an established camp at Lake Hurray Girl Scout Camp this summer. SENIORS, TROOP TWO The Senior Troop of Girl Scouts ha3 worked under the direction of Mrs. E. G. Colbert. We hear great rumors of stcad-frys, plans for a travel caravan for the summer months, and other exciting senior activities. It is said that these Sonior Girl Scouts know a great deul about horseback riding, that they are export with tho knitting needles, and that they know how to conduct a woed-end comp to the satisfaction of tho most fastidious member. For a long tine we thought that the Senior Scouts were raising chickens, but we have recently learned that the torn Hen House refers to their very own camping quarters located at Crusty Ranch, north of Blanchard,we suppose it will be in keeping for us to salute tho Senior Patrol with the well-worn, but expressive exclamation: Some Chickens! SENIOR HIGH BASKETBALL TEAM Front Bows Holey Richey, Delma3 Erwin, Orlan Brooks, Perry Joe Stacy, Corky Isbell Second Bows J. W. Burlison, George Dennis, Ellis Wigley, Joe King, Coach, Tony Burris, Harvey Hale, B. J. Hill JUNIOR HIGH BASKETBALL TEAM Front Rows Donald Dennis, Troy Moore, Duane Ward Second Rows Dickie Clanton, Norval Joe Moore, Joe King, Coach, Junior Trout, Eugene Fletcher SPORTS Under the .Leadership of coaches Terrell and King, the Blanchard lions made a good record this year. In the McClain County Conference they did exceptionally well; and in games with Class A teams they gained much valuable experience. They play two class A teams: Norman High and Capitol Hill High. The Lions suffered two defeats from Norman and one from Capitol Hill. In the £5-46 season, the Lions played 22 games; they won 10 and lost 12 for a percentage of .£54. In the 22 games, the total number of points for the team was 609, an average of 27.6 noints per game. hllis v igley, captain and center of the team, was hi h-point man for the year with 201 points for the 22 aaes, which is an average of 9.1 points per game. Next year the Lions will miss j .V .Furlison and sllis Willey, seniors who will graduate this year. These two veterans of the cage game were assisted by john isbell, harvey nale, Berry ,'oe 3tacy, Tony nurris, a.ent Thornton, Roley Richey, R.J. Hill,George Dennis, and Delmas Erwin. Most of these players sow a great deal of game time, and some will be used more and will be Blanchard nieh heroes in one or two more years. Blanchard high, this year, has started playing baseball instead of softball, rrora now on, the baseball season will follow the basket ball season. The baseball diamond has undergone much improvement; a new back-stop has been set up, and the field has been leveled and enlarged. Blanchard nigh has many promising baseball players. Among them arepitchersj Junior Trout, K.J. Hill, Ellis Wigley, and Troy Moore.(infielders; j.W. Burlison, Roley Richey, Berry joe Stacy, Orlan Brooks, m. f. Clardy, Ellis wigley, and ueorge Dennis. (catchers JR.J. Hill and John isbell. (outfielders; Tony Burris, Harvey Hale, jerry ulifton, Sherman Whitaker, Delmas Lrwin, and Frank Calshan. Although, up to this time, the new baseball team has failed to push over a win, soon the team will hit its stride and will be accustomed to the national pastime-baseball. Instead of beginning next year’s athletic activities with -asketball practice, the Lions hope to begin with football early next fall. This can be done only if the football equipment can be secured. The student body will welcome football as it tends to make the school more interesting and is better for morale and keeping school spirit and enthusiasm than any other snort. The game of football can not be learned well in one year or in two years, so it will take time to build a good football team, in football, as in baseball, Blanchard has many potential players. Students, such as Harvey Hale and Tony Burris, would make good ends; George Dennis and Junior Trout would be qualified as tackles; and there are many good backfield prospects, such as urlan arooks, John isbell, nent Thornton, and many others. The lsnch- ard nigh school student body hopes to have a good football team as well as good baseball and basketball teams.
