Er long time ergo, said Uncle Remus, er whole batch ob chilluns started to school in Blakely, Georgia, honey. Bless grashus, chile, dey wuz good nice chillun. Dey mommas tuck 'em to de schoolhouse en sot 'em down en lef' 'em wid de teachers. De teachers tol'dem dey wuz goin'on a big education hunt in high school an' ter play lak de wuz on a boat. Seems dis education hunt would take dese chllluns to heaps of places, er so dey sez. 'Course dey wusn't really gwlne nowhere - dey wus just makin' believe. Well, sez de teachers, de name ob de boat wuz - The Shell and it tukThe Class of 54 - dat was whut de chillun called deyselves - ober de ocean of Grammar School. Dey had their- selves 'er time on dis boat en de teachers wuz Miz J. E. Freeman en Mis' Verne DuBose. two nice white ladies. Dey call Miz Sessions de captain ob de boat. Now new chllluns wuz coming to de school all de time en in de second er third year of dis tfip dey wuz takin', Mary Frances Owen and Norman Nobles come to go wld 'em. ln de fourth year dey changed boats en dey left de old Shell en clum on a bright shiney new un - De Blakely-Union School -dey called hit. Now all de time dey wuz get- tin' closer en closer ter de place where dey wuz gwine en Jackie Widener en Miriam Bynum en Lucy Wasdin en Herbert Swords en Betty Odum jined up wid 'em. Dey get Themselves a new Captain too 'caze Miz Sessions, she never went no fu ther. After er sailin' en er sailin', dey come ter er island named Junior Hil Dem chil- lens seen dem dat dey had ter go fru' er whole lot er pre-le'ming 'fore dey could get ter dis hyar High School. Dey wuz scared ob dis place enyhow kaze dey called sum ob de older chilluns cannilalo out wid de good guides dey had - de teachers yo' know - dey fin- ally got ter de country where dey put out ter go - de Blakely High School. Now all 'long de journey some chllluns lef 'em en some new ones jined. Er pile ob chllluns come up frum Cedar Springs now - Mary Stokesen Hallie Ruth Perry en Wynette Hayes en Doris Odum. Dis wuz in 1950 'en dey sets out agln fer de end ob de trip - en it would take em 4 mo' years ter git dar. When dey got in de High School Coimtry dey notice de thickets gettin' thicker en dese hyar cannibuls tumed out ter be some more chilluns in dis country. Dey wuz called de Soph'mores. Dey would play tricks on dese other chilluns who wuz called Freshmen now. De cannibuls would paint the other girls faces till you didn't know 'em en dey would run dem boy chllluns down de belt line! Dey found heaps of other chlllun tryin' ter get ter dis same place dey wuz goin' en all de peoples and other chilluns help' 'em along. Dey hader heap of nice things happen ter em too - de Football, de Basketball, de Junior- Senior Banquet, de Beta Club, de Tri-Hi-Y, de Hi-Y de F.F.A., en F.H.A, , en er heap of other things. Now me 'en you don't know mech 'bout sech things as dese but law-zee, honey, dem chllluns did 'kaze you see, dey wuz gitten' edercated all the time. Louise Blackburn en Sonny Hewitt jined 'em now. When dey cum to think about gitten near de end ob de trip, dey commenced ter git sadder en sadder 'kaze de wuz havln'er good time all er long. Dey got er new leader now, Mister G. W. Hause en dey got deyselves two new Guides - Miz J, O. Brown en Mis Annette Alexander, en dey had toched 'em sumpin' new. En so de sun shined brighter den ever, de skies wuz blue, en dey kep' on de trip round by Washington, D. C. Frances Pear- son, from Hilton, jined up wid 'em. Well, bless honey, dese chllluns had got ter de city ob Graduation now en dey fig- gered dey had learnt all de cud in high school. So dey 'jest started back to dey ship. Den dey realized dat dey couldn't make no journey back en dey sho' couldn't stay where dey wuz - ebber thing comes in goes yer know -- ebberthing like education, dat? is. Time, hit wuz movin' on en dey knowed dey had ter move on too. So dey tole dey school friends goodbye wid tears in dey eyes and dey thank all dey teachers en principals en coaches en janitors en fellow classmates for dey help en patience en guidance. Den dey all made a speech thru' dey Historian. Dey say, As we, the Senior Class of 1954, perpar' to journey on thru life in us jet plane,us feel dat us is better prepared ter become useful citizens, Us hates ter leave BHS but dat ls de way ob life. De memories of us school days in Blakely-Union High School will be wid us always en will be one of us most cherished and loved possessions. All de fun us had, all de joys, all de sorrows of us pas' twelve years will be in us hearts forever 'n ever.
