There is either never enough or always too much. It is ever present in our lives. Time, the main essence of our being. How does a Blake student combat this thing that has so many people in a complete frenzy? The answer is with careful planning and organization. But what Blakie leads a scheduled let alone passive life? At Blake we learn to value time, to spend it wisely, to use it to our best advantage and to appreciate the speed with which it travels. After all, that’s what life’s about. Just when time seems to slip through your fingers as you desperately run up the stairs to make it to a class on time; it turns on you and you find yourself nodding off during a test. These two extremes are often the only glimses we get of time; either too much or too little. We seem compelled here at Blake to cram our lives full of activities. To be involved someway with the school is not enough. A sport, the play, Spectrum or Debate consume every free minute outside of the normal school day. Every minute is full with dates, places and names. As a result we emerge as spectacular people, well rounded, having a list of credentials far outweighing the average student’s. Yet valuable time is lost. As we rush from activity to activity we become programmed, little alarms ring to tell us when to go on. This thing called time is tricky to master. Our best bet lies in treating time with respect. Take time out of that busy schedule we call life. Endless opportunities lie before us to grasp moments of job, peace and happiness. At Blake one thing we all realize is how time flies, whether you’re having fun or not, it really cruises by. So we present to you this memory book to capture the good times, the funny times even the tough times at Blake during 1985 and 1986. Rest assured, plenty of time was devoted to this production. Time is valuable, it carefully molds lasting friendships, vivid memories, forces a laugh or maybe even tears. So take the time to look at Blake and to remember the time of your life!! Opening • 3 Bill Marton Shows Timeless Devotion To The Blake Schools Because of your enthusiasm, dedication, and genuine concern for the entire Blake community, the 86 Reflections staff sincerely dedicates this year's yearbook to you. You've gone beyond your commitment In the classroom to work for the benefit of others. The devotion that you have shown to the school is evident in the many ways that you've involved yourself in events and encouraged others to do so as well. Your abundant energy is easily received by others. Your devotion does not end with the final sigh of the academic year in June, but continues into the summer with Camp Acoma. Your immense interest in children and students makes you an outstanding director, advisor, and friend. Your valuable trust which each counselor and activity director wins, is forever cherished. Children laugh with you, flock to you, and even quake at your booming rendition of the Camp Acoma song. Extending your love and devoting your time to the Blake Schools is clearly shown in your flawless management of Camp Acoma. Your style in the dassroom is unique, not to mention effective. Freshmen are introduced to social studies through World Culture which becomes the base for all other courses offered. The individual attention and care you expend makes each student want to work and learn. American Culture for sophomores is charged with your ‘old war stories'. Three Wars and the advanced class Issues in American History offer juniors and seniors In depth views on difficult subjects. Your Incredible knowledge never ceases to amaze students. The dates pulled out of mid air, the names of old generals that come second nature to you add to the fun atmosphere of your classes. Will the second floor teachers ever become use to Marlon's voice echoing throughout the halls? We hope not. In addition to your dedication In the classroom, you have given much of your time to coaching which has been acknowledged by your admittance to the 25 Year Coaching Club. Those who you coached benefited from your dedication, humor and knowledge of the game. For years to come, your players will remember your enthusiasm and concern. So to you, Bill Marton, for the incredible amount of time, the smiles, and the memories you have given us during the past sixteen years, we thank you. 4 • Dedication Dedication • 5 Time After Time . . Blake Is The One! We never cease to demonstrate Blake’s unique ability to have a good time. Our sports teams are known to be tough competitiors to many other large public schools. Even though we are small, we seem to keep our position high on the list of excellence. The drama program has a reputation among other schools and social groups, as one of the best in the cities. The productions always deal with deep emotional issues, yet they are presented with a flair and professional aura. Each year brings incredible results from our debate and speech teams, often going as far as national tournaments. These teams have built a solid reputation throughout the state. These examples, however, exclude the real success of the Blake community: the remarkable students. The Blake student possesses a sort of energy that radiates wherever he or she may go, love for life that is rarely found these days. The maturity and respect shown to others also surprises many public insititutions the Blake school visits. As times change, these aspects of our personalities do not. That’s not to say every Blake student is the same, for we clearly are not. Each person contributes his own individual skills and talents to create the diverse atmosphere. With a Blake education behind us, we can only become better people, more caring, more understanding and more giving, as time goes by. 6 • Opening 1) Anne MacMillan. Opening • 7 Blake Talent Gets Rave Revues In terms of success, the 1985 Talent Revue was a sellout. Participation from singers, dancers, musicians and other entertainers made it an enjoyable evening for all. Regulars to the stage: Women's Chorus. Concert Choir, All That Jazz, Mixed Company, Men’s Glee Club and Blaker's Dozen performed with style. A note that hit home in the hearts of all present was the encore done by Blaker’s Dozen. “Teenager In Love”, with an outstanding solo by senior Eric Zeiss. Other acts included the popular Friends Forever title, performed by seniors Lisa Schmoker and Rachel Rubcnsteln. Three juniors lit up the stage with their outstanding singing performances. Joelle Purvis’ ability earned her a standing ovation for her rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. The piano was graced with three distinct styles: Junior Matt Segal, Freshman Leif Simonson, and Sophomore Bill Colburn. The bands “Revelation’’ and the “Jazz Ensamble” livened up the evening. “Revelation” performed an original song, Over the Wall, written by Eric Priest. Standing in as the Blues Brothers, Freshmen Peter Weinberg and Robert Goldberg lip-synched their way to stardom. Three talented Freshmen topped themselves Into the hearts of many with their winning smiles and enthusiasm. Two successful attempts at humor were made by Nell Alsip and Dan Goldner, with Inventive skits while Brad Schultze amazed all with his juggling. Summer ’85 What could be better than having endless amounts of time on your hands? Nothing! Spending lazy days outside, under the warm sun. and of course working on your tan both constitute summer. That blissful state we all float around in for three homework free months ends all too soon. Yet time ia no part of summer, who ever wears a watch during July? Only those over ambitious people who prefer furthering their educations through jobs. To sacrifice those dreamy mornings by jumping out of cool sheets to get to work on time truley deserves recognition. The summer worker however, enjoys his or her free time more so than those who sleep until 2:00 p.m., catch the last part of General Hospital and then get ready for that nights party only to return home at 2:00 A M. (if at all). That’s what summertime is for-to-do only what you want to do. Those fortunate enough to travel experience peak seasons abroad as well as at home. How can you top mountain climbing snow covered ridges in Washington as your back to school theme on “What I did During Summer Vacation”? Summer maintains the Blakies sanity during those cold Minnesota months. When loaded down with homework, rehersals and meetings where does the mind wander to? Of course. Mid-afternoon at Lake Harriet in late June. The mind remembers tank tops, shorts, bathing suits-all of which seem non existent while agonizing through a Chemistry exam in January. The Blake student confesses his or her excitement to return to school in early September, not to start new classes, but to talk about, what else, their fabulous summer. Memories made during the summer seem much more vivid for some reason. Yes. time flies when your having fun. but oh. what fun you had! 2 Summer • 11 Blake’s “Ballad” Of Love This year’s fall production, “The Ballad of the Sad Cafe”, proved the strength and artistry of the theatre department at Blake, with a virtually flawless show that played to full houses for all of its three performances. All of the hard work and determination that the cast, crew, and director had put into the play showed as the audiences were treated to one of the most difficult pieces ever brought to the Blake stage. Anne Sundberg, as Miss Amelia, Ben Drus-kin, as Cousin Lymon, and Dan Monlck, as Marvin Macy, skillfully portrayed three characters. all of whom were subject to the condition of love”. David Priest, as Narrator, and Bernard Antoine, as Henry Macy. displayed similar talent as they contributed their share to the story. Under the exceptional direction of Jeanne Blake, the supporting cost gave equally strong performances, with a combination of experience and fresh, new talent including; Jay Pearson as Stumpy Macphall; Matt Segal as Merlie Ryan; Tad Quill as Rainey 1; Philip McCrea as Rainey 2; Kathy Everly as Emma Hale; Christian Nelson as Mrs. Peterson; Bill Studebaker as Horace Wells; Greg Ebel as Henry Ford Crimp; Scott Saliterman os Rosser Cline; Erie Priest as Hasty Malone; Bill Watson as Lou Williams; and Missy Randall as Henrietta Ford Crimp. Many of the cast held dual positions during the production, with Kathy Everly being Student Director, while Matt Segal, Eric Priest and Bill Watson demonstrated their musician-ship by forming a jug band. Rick Polenek created the set and designed the lights, which were run by Noreen Foster. Carter Reece, Wendy Helgemo and Erich Zeiss all put time in to help build the set, while Adam Frisch and Kathy Everly worked on publicity. The town is dreary. On August altcrnoons the road l empty, white with dust, and the sky above is bright as glass Heat and wlenco. You might n well walk down to the Fork Falls Road and watch the chain gang The twelve mortal men who arc together The Ballad of the Sad Cale the end.” 12 • Fall Play 5 Fall Play 13 Mlw Amelia and cousin Lyman short an intimate moment. The slogan for the week was “Beat Them With The Bear Facts”, originated by senior Stephanie Bell. The festivities began with the traditional Wednesday night bonfire at the middle school. Skits were performed by the classes and athletic teams. The highlight of the evening was the announcement of the homecoming royalty. Freshmen attendees were Wendy Jensen and Jake Ritchie, sophomores were Kristina Davenport and Chris Kahler, juniors were Anne Bokman and Stewart Crosby, seniors were Andy Kopstein and Beth Hodder. The king and queen were crowned as Steve Kahler and Sara Weinberg. Excitement and congratulations surrounded these people for the rest of the week. Sweatshirts and buttons were sold with a Blake bear on them drawn by senior Kevin Delany. Unfortunately the Bears were Defeated by Centennial in the football game but that didn’t dampen the intense spirit of the athletes and crowd. The Homecoming dance that evening of Friday October 7 proved Blake spirit to be in top condition. The band that played was A Few, and dance-goers partied to their terrific music. During the week, Blakies dressed up in clashed outfits, as famous people and the highlight of the week was Rambo Rambette day. The halls were filled with rough looking guys and girls who wore ripped clothes and bandanas around their heads. However, students were warned against carrying any implements of destruction. The week was rounded out by a very special pep fest. The whole school standing and singing Blake, Blake. Overall, despite the defeat, the 1985 Homecoming was full of spirit and good times. 14 • Homecoming Homecoming ‘85 1. The football team roughs it out against the chiefs. this page 1. Homecoming • 15 IF YOU'VE GOT THE TIME BLAKE IS THE PLACE Reflections Reflections this year was fantastic to say the least. Every Wednesday night found the hallways echoing with editors voices asking where the layouts for the deadline were. Besides the fact that the staff always found themselves behind schedule, it wouldn’t be fair to say they didn’t have fun. With all the people working on yearbook, the staff was blessed with a diverse range of personalities and talents. Saturday morning meetings were not the favorite but they were handled with superb music and food. A feeling of working directly for the school and its memories kept the yearbookers sane throughout the year. Editor Kathy Everly and Assistant Editors Anne Sundberg and Amy Segal kept spirits high and the meetings fun for all. Bruce Archibald as Faculty advisor also kept things under control with his easy going attitude. The final product is evidence enough that the Reflections staff had “one terrific time”. Led by Editor-in-Chief Brian Lucas. Associate Editor Sara Weinberg, and Faculty Advisor Daryl McAnnany, the entire staff worked hard to fill the paper with stories of interest to the entire school. They looked hard at school affairs and developed a ‘‘nose for news” that produced some very exciting stories. The staff learned to work together and help each other through meetings which often went well into the night. By putting in this extra effort, the ‘85-‘86 Spectrum staff was able to put out a top-notch paper. First row: G. Ebel. L. Schmoker. A. Kopstcin. D. Warner. S. Weinberg. B. Lucas. A. Jarvis. H. There were over forty students involved in the first issue alone. Will Fisher became Flash’s literary advisor and Robert Teslow its artistic advisor. A large staff, pulled together to work quickly, efficiently, and thoughtfully to design the best magazine they could. It was a convenient year to change Flash because there were so many new staff members. Also included in Flash was a discount ticket to the NAHS winter dance and an example of the printmaking talent in the upper school. The changes this year were the beginning of improvements to Flash. Although the staff made trmendous headway, there will always be something that can be improved. Fortunately. this year’s staff was willing and anxious to work hard to create a better magazine. Concert Choir Mixed Company, led by Robin Bennett and Dale Warner, is a small, select vocal ensemble made up of juniors and seniors from the Concert Choir. Mixed Company is the only coeducational. small singing group at the Blake Schools, adding greatly to the music program. The performances this year ranged from traditional concerts and a madrigal dinner to a concert at Park Nursing Home and tour singing. The repertoire of the group is basically jazz, classical, and pop. Though Mixed Company was composed of almost all newcomers, it has had a very successful year. First row: B. Lucas. N. Chapman. Creating, captivating, and charismatic are three words to describe the 1985-86 Concert Choir. Under the directions of Ginny Claessens, and Severin Behnen, this years choir has proved to be one of Blake’s strongest singing groups. Although the number of Choir members has dropped by almost half over the last years, it remains to be an overwhelming success. This year the choir elected to have it second Madrigal dinner, which was able to surpass the success of last years. The group featured delicate sounds at the Talent Revue and Spring Concert as well. Without a doubt, this year’s Concert Choir was the best that Blake has ever had. Front row: G. Claessens. B Anderson. L. Rasmussen. T. Gunderson. K Loken. S. Weinberg. L Schmoker. R. Bennett. D. Womens Chorus Glee Club The 1985 1986 Womens Chorus, composed of both old and new members from all four classes, had a very strong year. Increased size and incredible enthusiasm gave Chorus a dazzling beginning at the Talent Show. Performance in the Madrigal Dinner and the Spring Concert also provided an opportunity for a diverse cross section of music, entailing folk, Renaissance, and popular pieces. This years co-presidents were seniors Liz Rasmussen and Wendy Nordstrom. With the patience and encouragement of Ginny Claes-sens and Sevrin Behnen, the Womens Chorus had an exciting and rewarding year. Front row: A. Stott. D. Mastrandrea. W Nordstrom. K. Ellis. S. Directed by Ms. Virginia Claessens and Severin Behnen the Men’s Club perfected over ten complicated pieces and even found time to have fun. The highlight of the year was a trip to Madison, Wisconsin where they wowed everyone with their good looks and quality singing. The trip and it's intricascies were painstakingly planned by officers Dion Crushshon, Jon Ebel. Matt Segal. Mark Pihlstrom, Mike Blum and Eric Priest. The sales alone from their cassette of the 1985 group really shows how much the group is respected and loved by the Blake community. The 1986 Dozen crew is every bit as successful as the Blakers of years past. A new lineup of songs as well as members, lead by David Priest, Dan Goldner, and Erich Zeiss, have proven just as effective, if not moreso, in demonstrating the group’s ability and talent range. They are always a pleasure to hear. Front row: M. Phllstrom, C. Passi. B. Watson. D. Goldner. M. Hatfied. Second row: D. Bergerson. D. Priest. M. Segal. B. Druskin. Third row: G. Ebcl. N. Alsip, M. The Philisophy Club was one of several new organizations which entered the extracurricular world of Blake this year. Led by president Dale Warner and Faculty Advisor. Mr. Lee Wool-man. the club's major purpose this year was to give students a chance to meet outside of the school day and discuss topics of interest such as Hailey’s Comet and the concepts of Hedonism. Their schedule was highlighted by the arrival of a speaker who specialized in dream research and the most recent findings and beliefs behind the possible meanings of our dreams. The club looks forward to next year in hopes of expanding the program and increasing the number of members. President: D Warner and his group of thoughtful ones. The International Club's purpose is to inform the Blake community about foreign cultures. It does this by helping various ethnic groups in the Twin Cities, sponsoring culture related activities. and bringing speakers into the school. The 1985-86 International Club, with president Amy Bergquist. vice-president Missy Randall, faculty advisor Nelly Hewett, ran a successful clothing drive for Hmong refugees in the Twin Cities. The club members held several pot-luck dinners. In the Spring, many members went to the Festival of Nations. The International Club successfully explained its role in making Blake students more aware of foreign countries, their citizens, and the lives they lead. Front row M. Randall. A Bergquist. Gatspy, the school ferret, is still quite popular with students and crowds can always be seen gathering around the snake’s aquarium when a live mouse is offered to it as dinner. Lopez Fencing Club The all new Fencing Club added a flash to the list of clubs at Blake. Under the supervision of experienced fencer Roberto Sobalvarro the club introduced the sport of fencing to a number of Blake students. The group met every Monday and Wednesday for two hour sessions. Through Roberto’s clear explanations and demonstrations the group picked up the art quite easily and many students began to show great promise. Although the competition was not too stiff the club practiced and perfected their fencing skills. A member of the Minnesota Sword Association, Arthur Phillips contributed his time to help the group. Phillips was the founder of the group and the motivating force behind its establishment at Blake. The large number of students involved in the club in it’s first year is a great sign that it will be alive and kicking for future fencers. Congratulations to the Fencing Club for it’s terrific first year. Touche! 1. Roberto Sobalvarro demonstrates his perfected technique. 2. The outrageous, fun loving fencing team. Madrigal Dinner In lieu of Blake’s traditional winter concert, the music department managed to put on the second annual Madrigal Dinner. Weeks of preparation and rehearsals led to the December 13 and 14 festivities. Under the leadership of Ginny Claessens, each singing group performed its own selections, with the three groups. Women’s Chorus, Men’s Glee Club, and Concert Choir combining for a truly grand finale. Banners led the guests into the Great Hall where they were serenaded by Blake’s small singing ensembles, including Mixed Company, All That Jazz, and Blaker’s Dozen. Guests drank the traditional wasail and nibbled on hor d’oeurves of fruit and cheese. The kitchen sacrificed many long hours in preparing the feast, an authentic English dinner which included roast beef as well as plum pudding. Organizers for this gala were Jan Sundberg, Mary Anderson, and Ilka Priest, along with many other mothers of participants, who did everything from planning the menu to helping with reservations; their efforts enhanced the total effect of the evening. With the Madrigal Dinner, the music department managed to mix traditional music, food and decor in creating a memorable evening for all. 1. The teams were led by Allconference captains Adam Frisch and Sarah Strand along with All-conference team members; Stewart Crosby, Philip McCrea, Cassie McCrea and Amy Randall. The boys team’s highlights were winning their Section meet and qualifying for State as a team and sending Adam Frisch and Stewart Crosby as individuals. The Men’s team, led by senior captain Dale Warner and juniors Kevin Kelly, Ben Hale, and Gavin Bart, had one of its best meet records ever, and finished 2nd at the region meet. Solid performances by the entire team contributed to an amazing season. This year was intended to be one for rebuilding the women’s team, but superb performances by captain Beth Anderson and junior Ann Bokman made the team a powerful force in the conference. Bokman won the region and Anderson finished sixth leading the team to a third place finish in the region. Blake’s only representative in the state meet this year was Ann Bokman who placed 4th. With the new skating technique Tammy Pit-mon and Ted Hale created, a team that slashed times right and left, established itself as a dominant force in the region. Sports • 75 A Tribute To The Blake Athlete 76 • Blake Athlete Some may think that Blake Athletics are overshadowed by its fine academics, but the Blake athlete begs to differ. They may spend up to six hours on end working on the various skills that accompany their sport. That is why we want to recognize their accomplishments and long hard hours that they spend to maintain the respect that Blake athletics has in and around the community. The Blake athlete is found heading out to another state tournament match, something which is not a foreign occurance to him. As seen on his shirt, the winning tradition does not stop here. And. sometimes he can be found late at night practicing his triple reverse-360 slam dunk. This is why he is appropriately called sir Jam-alot. He may also be found in the locker room at 6:00 A.M. on Saturday morning dressing for an intense, physically demanding three hour span of puck on a clean sheet. If you looked outside you might find that sometimes he can not wait for his respective season and thus can be found practicing his chip shot in the heart of winter with the weather conditions of 60 below zero. Running late to practice, and having to use every precious second, he must change to his ski clothes on the road. Stemming from his commitment is a true sense of satisfaction and therefore the Blake athlete will continue to strive for excellence. THE TIMES THEY ARE A CHANON' I A Time To Remember The time in which we live is filled with music and art. This year saw the comeback of a few vintage artists. One of them being Bruce Springsteen. His Born in the U.S.A. album stayed on the charts for two years and six hit singles were released from it. Bruce seems to capture the true American in his music and his attitude. His down-home appearance and lyrics make him appealing to many different types of people. For the more mellow crowd. Bob Dylan made his long awaited comeback with his album Empire Burlesque . Dylan also showed his undying talent by performing with Ron Wood and Keith Richards at Live Aid. Garrison Keillor, the Minneapolis born writer, bursted into the national scene with his book about the make-believe town of Lake Wobegone. The book and his radio show A Prarie Home Companion were given rave reviews in Time magazine. Sting, officially Gordon Sumner, decided a solo career from The Police was his best move. The result was a thoughtful, very successful album Dream of the Blue Turtles . Madonna shook the record industry with her controversial Like a Virgin” album. Her provacative lyrics and suggestive live performances kept her on magazine covers year round. Minneapolis established itself as a center for the arts through such people as Keillor and of course Prince. Our minds were challenged with many new ideas by artists and writers. This year proved to be an exciting and entertaining one for all. 114 • Current Events 1985-86 Politically speaking. 1985-86 was filled with excitement and monumental events. It marked the first visit to the United States for English royalty Prince Charles and Princess Diana. The couple was greeted in Washington D.C. by the Reagans and later honored at a gala ball in Miami. Florida. U.S. President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev met in Geneva Switzerland for a three day summit meeting. Issues of nuclear arms, human rights and the U.S. ‘Star Wars' defense system were debated. The summit showed the public that the two leaders of the superpower nations were willing to negotiate and talk. That is the first step towards peaceful coexistence. The summit received unlimited media and was said to be the most important meeting in the history of the two countries. Live Aid Live Aid. originated and organized by Boomtown Rat lead singer Bob Geldof. was the most successful and the largest live rock concert ever staged. All proceeds from ticket and paraphanalia went to help starving Africans, stricken by hunger in Ethiopia. The acts that gathered in Philadelphia performed for free and included such greats as Bob Dylan. Madonna. Tina Turner and a reunion of two members of Led Zepplin. At the same time in Great Britain a similar concert was happening. The groups that performed there included U2, David Bowie and a reunion of The Who. These concerts gave us more than just great music. On July 13 the world united to help people survive. The effort payed off. More than 15 million dollars was donated to the cause. The music industry proved to be more giving and sympathetic then anyone had ever imagined. It was a great success for all those Involved and arose a sense of pride in the hearts of citizens world wide. A pep fest assembly was held to honor all winter sports. The cheerleaders added to the spirit by leading the school in the ever popular Blake Spirit cheer. After a morning of classes, school was dismissed and everyone headed over to Theodore Wirth Park where there was tubing, snow football, skiing and relaxing by a fire in the lodge. That afternoon was an excellent way to get away from the pressures of school and spend time with friends. Even the teachers were able to enjoy this time away from school as they participated in the activities and were able to better know their students outside of the classroom. The weather was sunny and the atomsphere in the lodge helped to warm frozen toes and fingers. Organized by Senior Amy Segal and faculty member Bill Marton, the day proved to be an overwhelming success. On Saturday night a Parent Committee sponsored dance was held at the Middle School. Great Nation, the band performing was excellent and rounded out the weekend with a great dance. Once again Sno Daze proved to be the prime way to beat those winter blahs! This page. 1. The Blake Hockey program and arena received impressive contributions during the 1985-86 season. The most notable addition was the Blake Banner, which was designed by senior Kevin Delaney and completed by the entire National Arts Honor Society, under the direction of faculty advisor Bob Teslow. The banner was finished in less then a year, and it was hung in the arena at the beginning of the season. The second contribution was a generous gift from 1961 Blake graduate Peter Markle, who donated the proceeds from a special preview of his new film “Youngblood” to help renovate the existing arena. “Youngblood” was written and directed by Markle, and much of Blake community turned out for the premier screening and reception, held at the Skyway theater in downtown Minneapolis. Senior Weekend 1985 truly was the weekend when time stood still. For three days at beautiful Camp Warren in Eveleth, Minnesota, the graduating class of 1986 let it all hang out. Whether it was building a human pyramid after the Senior Olympics, or square dancing in Cub Lodge on Saturday night, the worries and pressures of senior year seemed to be far away. Sunday morning, the class divided into groups to set goals for themselves as well as the class for the upcoming school year. The seniors even helped out the Camp Warren staff by doing various service projects, which included everything from husking corn to digging ditches. The perfect weather let the class spend all of its freetime in the beautiful outdoors. Senior Olympics consisted of a number of events, including an egg toss which turned into an egg “throw,” a pass the orange race, and the infamous bat drill. The Olympics ended with a staff “drill off” between Mr. Seel and Mr. Bartel. There is no way to describe what happened, but seniors will never forget it. The several hours of square dancing turned out to be one of the most fun events of the weekend, as seniors and faculty alike promenaded around the room. The Sunday night skits, everyone mellowed out around the campfire and listened to some good tunes. The energy level picked up again as some seniors brought their ammunition for the shaving cream extravaganza. Monday morning, as the sleepy but happy seniors climbed aboard the busses for the trip home, they knew that the weekend when time stood still would live on forever. They would never forget the good times they had shared, and the memories they had made. 2 Time Stood Still 168 • Senior Weekend Opposite Page 1. Three friends enjoy canoeing on Half Moon Lake. Senior Weekend 169 I Believe It’s Time For Me To The Blake senior has two things on his mind: preparing for college and getting into college. While the process is a complicated one, it is broken down into several stages throughout the year. The first is the infamous barrage of college mail a senior receives during the fall and winter months. Often one gets three or four of the same brochure from some unknown college, which most of the time goes directly from the mailbox to the trash. Next comes the filling out of the applications. This a tiresome and strenuous, but important part of the process. While deadlines always seem a long ways away, more than a couple seniors have relied on the trusty “Express Mail Next-Day Service” to get their applications in on time. The final and most agonizing part of the process is waiting for the big verdict: yes? or no. This waiting includes practically attacking the mailman each day, and constant calls home to ask mom whether the letters are thick or thin. The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat are real life situations when Mid-April finally rolls around for the class of ’86. 170 • College Process College Process • 171 Sometimes You’ve Just Because the senior year is such a special one, pictures are worth a thousand words. We even survived the initial panic when we missed our first deadline by two weeks. Throughout the year we argued, agreed, taught and learned and each of us gained valuable experience in working with others. A very special thanks from all of us goes to Bruce Archibald. Without his easy going “send it in tomorrow” attitude we would have been lost. Here’s to the section editors who withstood corrections, complaints and brought all of their talents together in this book. Time has slipped by once again, only yesterday we were scurrying around changing schedules and settling in. Only yesterday we promised each other to make this year the best one yet, and that we did. As our time together dwindles down remember the special, fun happy times. For time is our worst enemy and our best firend. I sincerely hope you enjoy the 1986 reflections Kathy Everly Memory brushes the same years Silently sharing the same fears Time it was and what a time it was It was a time of innocence, a time of confidences Long ago, it must be I have a photograph Preserve your memories They’re all that’s left of you Simon and Garfunkle 184 • Closing
