The first year of the Blake Schools has opened doors for everyone concerned New and exciting areas of life, both the social and academic aspects, have become consolidated into a co educational environment, and everything is running smoothly. Old Cyrus at the Upper Campus has never seen the life around the fireplace he watches over: boys and girls together, sharing their thoughts, their secrets, their futures. The great runners come in cycles, and that talent is beginning to sprout in the lower ranks. Running is a frustrating, but rewarding because no matter what position a runner places, he is always a winner. He has conquered time until his next race. They not only placed third in their conference along with sending their doubles team to state, but also had a lot of enthusiasm and fun. They were a young team, with only three juniors and the rest sophomores and freshmen. They learned a lot. had fun. had some regrets and hard losses, but all in all had a great season and hope to do even better in 75. The tennis team owes much to their coach. Shedd An average spectator might consider the new 1974 girls' SWIMMING team fantastic in all aspects, and so would an expert. Working with a top-rated coach, our team defeated the toughest Minneapolis competitors to find their losses in their own conference. Although no state championship was held this year. Blake looks forward to a title in the future years. JT With a coach, a manager, and fiften players, the girl's VOLLEYBALL team had a relatively successful season. They started with strenuous practices under the supervision of coach Mary Walters. Success came slowly in the beginning of the season, but the team soon posed a threat to the other teams in the Tri-Metro League. Members of the team ranged from grades 8 through 12. and included that Brazilian celebrity. Marcia Arantez. Familiar phrases which will not be forgotten are. Let's boogie. Ever wonder what it's like to put on a football helmet and shoulder pads for the very first time, and then have to go out and prove to yourself your mind can do it. even though your body can t? Ever wonder where the beginning is? On the FRESHMAN FOOTBALL field, young talent and skill are bom everyday of sweat and frustration. Apart from the rest of the process , the only thing that really changes from year to year about J.V. FOOTBALL is the record. After a long season of learning to bruise or be bruised. I've also learned all it takes is a little more confidence The boys of the middle, of one step up. the kings of J.V. Buie, and Lardlaw, move dcm the soccer held for a good tno scoring combination. “Sparked'’ by the coach, the VARSITY SOCCER team compiled a respectable record in the MISSL. The men with the moves, the excitement-getters, and the determined made up the Bears' offense and defense. As the games progressed, so did the quality, especially displayed in their last game, which made our Millers the very best! A group of both rookies and veterans entered a new league not knowing fully what to expect from the other teams or from each other. Their character startled many. It was described as quiet anticipation. Whether all the hard work and effort was worth the handling of some teams and the being handled by a few others belongs to the opinion of each player. Regardless, the establishment of a team in a new league, and the good times are what remain of a VARSITY FOOTBALL memory. Passing opponents, and surpassing records. L HiMHy While only a hangout for some, to the more cultured SHELF retains all the dignity of the old Blake tradition of dumping the system by filling those empty blocks of time with some high — powered Peanuts, or maybe an occasional mellow MAO With all the old charm and a new name for popular paperback lit. it's no wonder why it's more patronized than is the ladies room across the hall. There is an old Chinese proverb which states that a logical mind can afford to make mistakes, while the illogical mind cannot afford to even think Members of the CHESS club may have made mistakes, but they had a good time in doing so. Thomson The old nite clubs used to feature a talent nite where the local talent would compete for a prize, but it was often difficult to choose a winner. When the Blake BAND began to clamber, shriek and harmonize, many of those old nite club memories came back. This local talent didn't need any competition; it was a winner in itself. It was said that their music attracted both young and old. with much enjoyment by all. 45 WRIT HAPPENED TO W,H,A,T, RADIO,,. WHAT RADIO, having outgrown its storage room studio and ten-foot reception radius, finally arrived at the new school scene in the third quarter. WHAT's carrier current system, designed by students and built by United Media Co., has a broadcasting day of 7:00AM to 3.00PM with more than 29 different student announcers a week. Besides their progressive rock jazz music format, the station carries: Crawdaddy Radio Review,” Science Fiction Theater, Malignant Creativity Minutes,” special focus on student talents, various experimental and dramatic theater, live concerts, and the latest news. ANOTHER first for the Blake Schools was having a MIXED CHOIR with all the voices anyone could possibly want. Putting up with bag lunches for weeks, and early Wednesday morning practices, they managed to accomplish an array of songs. What else did they do? Well, they learned many of Debbie Friedman’s songs, never gave 'Arise my Love' a chance at St. Olaf's, swung their partners all the way to Boston' and had a night out” at Shakee's. Many memories came out of those rehearsals The new” girls who joined this year learning the songs faster than the “old .. Maybe this year the tour will get out of state don't forget to preshrink the material SIT UP STRAIGHT!! I like him. I really like him. blowing out the candles and disappearing in a cloud of smoke but I hate this song! PLEASE wear nice shoes! . . long skirts, knee socks, and Wallabees These memories for the voices in the Women’s Chorus, and it was with them that the group had a most enjoyable and successful year. 49 One of the tew male traditions to remain intact was the GLEE CLUB continuing with much the same character that had brought them due recognition in the past. Corwin, D McCary.W Fraley In a room on third floor called the “Pub there is an orange-red desk, some tables, and a coffee pot where you will usually find a member of the SPECTRUM staff drinking tea and listening to music. Needless to say. they do more with their time than sit in the Pub.'' Blake's organized publication managed to continually turn out an interesting paper. Its articles have ranged from such things as athletic events, vandalism, reviews, the drug problem, to the budget, among countless others. When someone can witness both life and death in the same day, he takes on a different perspective on life. Of course there is the in-between of the two extremes with whom the crew of MEDICAL BIOLOGY works with most of all. Whether taking a temperature or giving a friendly word of reassurance, the realities of life (and death) are much clearer in one's memory. 5 HERPETOLOGY Welcome to the pit. Beneath it all. in a myriad of metal tanks and glass cages, are inhabited creatures that would be otherwise stalking the wild corners of their own respective worlds. Here they are brought to be exposed to the fantasies of humans, and vice-versa. Indeed, this is a world not believed until seen, experienced the fascinating challenge of Mr Gouiiiud. K Smith. C. Murphy During the 1974 1975 season VARSITY DEBATE teams participated in tournaments in Iowa. Illinois. North Dakota. South Dakota. Pennsylvania. and Minnesota. The Blake varsity debators averaged third place for the season in twenty invitational tournaments. More than forty school and individual trophies were won by squad members. The varsity teams finished the season with a first in the Tri-Metro Conference, third place in its first trip to the State Tournament, and qualified to attend the Private School Nations in Philadelphia in May. The summit of the squad's success was gained in the National Forensic league Qualifying Tournament. The Blake varsity team of Tom Long and Chic Dunne placed third, while the team of David Golden and Marshall Masko won first place. Masko and Golden will be representatives for Minnesota at the National Speech Tournament in Indianapolis this June. A Dud, M McQintock. J. Jorgensen. D Barter. K Brings. M Johnson. In a dingy closet behind the weight machine, amidst the candy scroungers and foosball a ddicts. there exists an establishment riding on the whims of dangling change and grumbling guts. It is fondly referred to as that haven of tooth decay. J.C. may be the reason you're seeing more of your dentist, but isn't it worth enjoying that Toosie Pop before returning upstairs? In the year of the new school, a new organization was created to deal with the problems and issues that developed. For the thirteen students and faculty members of the FORUM that task has been a fascinating one. Questions dealt with ranged from the concept of an honor roll to tardiness. Togetherness, friendliness, shar.ng: that was what the irs co-ed Senior Weekend was about. For some reason, people left their worries and barriers at home, arriving at Camp Warren determined to make the weekend turn out for the best. Through discussions, students and faculty came together as friends. People had the chance to become acquainted with others they did not know.
