IR 4ME OF REFERENCE There is. indeed a world outside of Blake. Events constantly take place which indirectly or directly involve us all. Looking back on the year -in the world, there was an end to our Vietnam involvement thus bringing an end to the draft, the return of American POW's and the withdrawal of troops; yet. war raged on in Northern Ireland and the Mideast. Politically. President Nixon was re-elected. Governor George Wallace of Alabama survived an assasination attempt which left him semi-paralyzed. Senator Eagleton was publicly disgraced as a result of a previous mental condition, and Presidents Truman and Johnson passed away, both in the span of less than a month, leaving Nixon the only living past president. On the economic level. America entered into Phase III of the government’s program, (yet prices continued to soar) the dollar was devalued, and Great Britain officially entered the common market. In the Olympic contests in Munich. Germany, the Israeli team was savagely murdered, and we. the United States, won the marathon. In our own vicinity, arguments raged between those business men who wanted a domed downtown stadium for purely mercenary reasons and those citizens who felt they shouldn’t have to pay for it. Legally, the Supreme Court ruled that existing laws governing abortion were unconstitutional and hospitals and clinics country-wide began performing abortions on demand. And there was the possibility of lowering the drinking age to eighteen in Minnesota. Finally, on the fantastic side. America had its last scheduled moon walk, and Jean Dixon was rumored to have predicted a snowstorm fatal to one-third of the population of Minnesota. 6
