IN VIEMORIkM HKROLD HODGKINSON A friend has passed away. His memory extends far back. ”Hodgie. as he was called, began teaching at St. Paul's School in 1922 Yet. at the conclusion of that first year. Dr. Samuel Drury. Headmaster of St. Paul’s School at the time, was impressed enough to write a summer letter to him: As my mind goes back over the year. I feel deeply grateful to you for all the good, solid work you have dedicated to St. Paul's.” The pattern was established; the mold was cast. The passing years only refined and polished the finished product, until it shone with its own reflected light. When Mr. Hodgkinson came to Blake forty-four years ago. his first Physics class numbered six students: there was no Chemistry. For most of these years. Hodgie was the science department at Blake. His courses were tough and exacting - but relevant and fascinating. Hodgie insisted on accuracy. Not only were his courses difficult, but they were truly interdepartmental in nature - a goal that educators of the 1970's are still striving to attain. History and philosophy, literature and the arts were as central to his teachings as were valences and formulae, forces and temperatures. His courses were unique. He was able to make history, science and the physical phenomena of the world come alive. Customarily, his physics students started with a blank piece of paper. Then, through adherence to facts and to accurate pursuit of observations and deductions, they arrived at both written and mental understanding of natural laws. He never allowed their thinking to be shoddy or superficial, their work had to be analytical, precise, orderly, and critical; their reasoning the same. But Hodgie's influence went far beyond the science classroom. During World War II he worked for the government m a program dealing with anit-ballistic missiles. Thirty years ago Hodgie was building Hi-Fi sets that were as good as any that are built today. As a musician, he sang, played the violin in quartets and introduced many a Blake student and faculty member to classical music - on the unusual record player he had built in his own home. He will always be with us because of what he gave to each: direction, superb competence, total dedication, uncompromising standards for himself and for others, a variety of interests, meticulous care in every pursuit, a warm, pixie ish sense of humor, a prodigious loyalty and a restrained, quiet wisdom.
