1971 OURTESY MINNEAPOLIS TRIBUNE THE 0 PAN CALL BLAKE SCHOOL, HOPKINS, MINNESOTA MHC In Grateful Recognition Of Their Many Jim Henderson The decade of the sixties saw more changes in education at Blake School than in any other period of time in its history. During these years Jim furnished outstanding leadership so and all of the past, as Years Of Devotion To Blake School And Her Students, He came early and worked late or at home or on weekends so that his door was always open to students and faculty during the day. He was never too busy for anyone's problem. He brought warmth, charm, wit, and a constant good spirit to everyone he encountered. He made Blake a friendlier school; a warmer school. Yet, he held tightly to its traditions which were so much a part of the school. We Humbly Dedicate This Book To Harold Hodgkinson . He joined Blake in 1927 to create a Science department that is now and has been for some time producing results second to none in secondary education. Not only did he introduce students to science, but he made his subject fascinating and relevant. Perhaps even more important, he taught his students to be critical and precise. His constant insistance on excellence has been a real inspiration to hundreds of Blake boys. The Men On These Pages. For Over 150 Years These Men Obedience to Law is Liberty. To quote Hodgie, The knowledge of the laws governing whatever we are doing and the obeying of them does not restrict or restrain us, but rather can free and expand both our abilities and our horizons, so that we may accomplish the most with those talents which we may possess. Have Helped Boys Become Young Men. Their Kindness Bill Glenn He was persuaded by Mr. Eugene Alder, then Headmaster, to come to Minneapolis and teach in the fall of 1930. Although undecided about his future, he spent four years at Blake before suddenly realizing that he loved Blake and this area, and that this was to be his life. For the past forty-one years he has been a sensitive teacher and friend, and an inspiring coach. He possessed a sense of deep humility, yet his great pride was one of his strengths. He shared a special closeness with whomever he associated, yet he always commanded great respect. He was meticulous in his concern never to destroy or hurt with an unkind word or act, but he always assisted his students carefully and constructively. His was a total devotion to Blake School and everything for which it stands. Wisdom, Reason, Logic, And Discipline Have Been The Harold Lundholm ... Like his colleague and close friend. Bill Glenn, Harold was persuaded by Mr. Alder to leave New York where he had been studying and working at Columbia University, and to become chairman of the Blake Mathematics Department. For thirty eight years he has been a teacher, coach, advisor, counselor, and friend. Cornerstones Of An Era Now Ended The appreciation and recognition of the differences in people are but two of Harold's greatest characteristics. His analytical mind was always tempered by a tremendously warm human spirit. His patience was unfailing whether dealing with a human being or an idea. He believed that education should allow boys to make insignificant mistakes so that as men they would not make significant mistakes. Happily, One Man Returns To Continue The Traditions Early in the fall of 1970 the entire school gathered on the track to participate in the dedication of that track to one of Blake's most loved and respected teachers and coaches — Chub Bcttels. His record is remarkable: 10 championships in 16 years, plus two state championship teams. But how do you measure the effect he has had on his students and on his teams throughout the past 18 years? In general, Blake people are uninvolved in community affairs, world affairs, or any affairs but their own. Homework, essays, books, bells, desks, term exams, month tests, lectures, class discussions, labs, speeches, movies, quizzes, in-class themes, oral reports, term papers, honor cards, report cards, month's average, class rank, college boards, passing, failing, sitting, studying, cramming, . . . academic life. 16 18 Getting students into the college of their choice Is this what academic life at Blake is all about? 19 Bless, O Lord, this food to our use Be it Margaret's chipped beef. The Quarterback Club's Fullback burger, or a donut and 7-Up. — blake lunches. Herein lies our Salvation or Damnation (depending on if you attend or not — interpret as you wish). Daily we are confronted by a choice between good and evil: Will it be lunch in our assigned seats with peaches for dessert? Or will it be to sit where we please, in the restaurant of our choice, to order what we want (usually for less than a dollar), and visit Room 118 tomorrow? and us to Thy faithful service. (What if we are atheists?) Amen. 21 School begins at 8:30 A.M. Often students don't get home until 6 P.M. Blake students have approximately 1 Vx hours of homework each night. — 11 hours devoted to Blake alone. Is it any wonder that Blake students often spend their spare time unprofitably : playing cards, hanging out windows, shooting the bull, painting, rapping, thinking ... Blake students are often accused of being too uninvolvcd in school clubs and activities and community affairs. Why? 22 23 It separates the jocks from the heads. — Or does it? Loneliness is standing out in right field waiting for a ball to come your way. — A universal feeling. Cooperating, competing, losing, defeating. This is what athletic life at Blake is all about. Compulsory athletics for many is a great experience in self-knowledge. For some it is an enclosed, enforced, frustrating waste of time. 25 A drizzly, dreary day it was — Doomsday by name. The two armies clashed under an overcast sky At the battle's end, the parting clouds revealed a Glorious Victory for the underdogs. In high schools allegiance to school is still being promoted and is considered important. An integral part of this School Spirit continues to be the cheerleaders. Ours represent a singular kind of School Spirit. They are hardly a mechanical, crack squad. They do not communicate a feeling of look-but-don't touch. Best of all, they are sincere, spontaneous, and not overly serious. In short, they are for-real chicks. And we extend our thanks. I had soon forgotten and immediately disassociated any thoughts of security as I thrust my knife into my enemy and slowly turned it with a sadistic patriotism that had been inbred into me by those God-fearing mothers who taught their children how to kill. I was apathetic, submissive, and satisfied with The Blake School. My greatest concerns involved football and wrestling. I did what I was told, worked hard for high grades and, in return, I knew that Blake would help me get into the college of my choice. What more could I want? Like many of you, I was satisfied — or more likely. See the funny hats and buttons they're wearing. See the funny signs they're carrying. See all the pretty balloons they have. Is this the Aquajesters' convention? Or maybe the Shrine Circus? Or is this a meeting of retarded persons? No, but you arc getting closer. This is a Republican convention. The funny people are delegates. What do they do? Well, they play with balloons and demonstrate when the candidate they support is introduced, and they march through the aisles carrying stuffed elephants, and on second thought, maybe this is a meeting of retarded persons. These delegates, when they are finished with their balloons and demonstrations and elephants also pick who we can vote for. Isn't this a great system of choosing a government? Chapter 3 — The President See the man with the funny nose. He is our President. In case you're wondering, he isn’t hiding anything in his cheeks — that's just the way they are. See him come out to campaign for Dick. The President is also a Dick. Hear the President speak of how Dick is much more qualified to be Senator than his opponent. Hear him say that he feels Dick will win. Watch him hold open a federal judgeship for Dick just in case. They don't call the President T ricky Dicky for nothing, you know. But who is the man next to the President? Why it is an old friend and trusted advisor. It is Billy Graham, the crusading millionaire. Crusade, millionaire, crusade. Why is he with the President? Well, as was said before, he is a friend of the President. But there are two other reasons also. The first is that the President wants to convince himself that he is a divine right president. It is firmly believed that a broad perspective of history coupled with the critical thinking skills and attitudes embodied in the historical method have practical application for students in dealing with current affairs. In order that these be accomplished, it is necessary to establish a good foundation in science for the understanding of science which is encountered in daily living as well as for use in continued formal education. Chemistry and Physics continued the long dynasty of students who benefitted from the knowledge of Mr. Hodgkinson. The things which separate one nation from another (languages, customs, and spirit) are not well enough understood in this world. So Spanish courses delve into the spirit of Spain and South America, French courses consider the philosophy of Sartre, Russian classes consider the nature of Communism, and German students look into the Teutonic life. There is, of course, the most famous language of all, revered by scholars and abhorred by students: Latin. A study of some other language and country leads to a better understanding of our own. Languages (continued) td The Department of Modem Foreign Languages has endeavored to make real for the student the concept that the world is composed of many cultures and civilizations — not just one. The most effective means of accomplishing this end is to develop, to the highest possible degree, an ability to deal with the written and spoken language of at least one foreign country. Quality of understanding is stressed rather than quantity covered. Verbal problems requiring development of analytical skills arc used fredy. Familiarization with computer language and with the capabilities of a computer is a new thrust this year. Ik In algebra, linear functions are covered thoroughly and algebraic principles are extended with an emphasis on quadratic functions. Geometry-courses stress the nature of proof while reviewing and maintaining previously learned algebraic concepts. The elective Math 12 course is taken by those students vitally interested in math or science or by those desirous of trying their capabilities at a higher level. The topics covered include trigonometry, analytic geometry, statistics and pre-calculus. Calculus covers both differential and integral calculus for the College Board Advanced Placement Mathematics Exam. The courses offered by Blake's Art Department provide experiences in art to meet the varying needs and interests of students. For those students who wish to enrich their humanities background. History of Art introduces them to an understanding and enjoyment of works of art. The Short Art Course provides an introduction for students interested in an experience oriented content, an approach continued in Art 12 for those who have found success, leading to college level interests and quality. Young Team State Ranked In this year's Non-Public School state meet, the Blake swim team placed second behind powerful DeLaSalle which took every first place except one. Most of the Blake swimmers recorded their best times of the season in the state meet which was termed the best independent state meet ever. Freshman Kirby Binder was the only Blake swimmer to get a first place. During the season Blake complied a record of 14 wins and 2 losses, both losses coming at the hands of the eventual state champs, DeLaSalle. Psychologically, the biggest win of the season was over 18th ranked Burnsville. As a result of that win, Blake was ranked 20th in the state. At the end of the season the team learned that it takes hard work to be a winner. Although the team loses six valuable seniors, the team has a bright future with many underclassmen returning. Champions Stale Independent Champions Varsity Tennis Team Finds State Title At Rainbow's End At the beginning of the season. Captain John Mas-sie expressed cautious optimism about the 1971 team. He felt that Blake could be a contender for the league title, but hopes for a championship depended largely on the turn-out for the team and individual improvement during the season. After a first round loss to traditional rival SPA SS, Blake did not lose another league game as the senior dominated team began to concentrate on more consistent play. In the return match with SPA SS, they defeated their crosstown rivals to once again tie for the league crown. In the subsequent state play offs, host Blake captured the Non-Public State Title. Young Team Breaks Even A youthful Blake team opened the season on a winning note, but after two successive losses it could never put together a sustained win string. Often errors and walks plagued the team forcing them to play conservatively instead of aggressively. The team did develop and show signs of progress, but it seldom had the good pitching, hitting, and fielding it needed to become a serious challenger for the title. Crew Crushes AH Its Opponents Except One Crew, although not an officially recognized sport at Blake, was run as if it were by its coach and captain, Austin Indritz. Members used the boathouse and shells of the Minneapolis Rowing Club, and had to pay a fee of $15.00 to join the club. Each day members had to carry the forty foot, 350 lb., eight man shell from the boathouse to the Mississippi River. Once the shell was in the water, the oarlocks were greased and the oars inserted. An average run consisted of rowing several miles up the river to the University of Minnesota and back. Since few high schools had a crew, the Blake crew had no intersholastic competition. Managing a large cast, director Jim Watson produced the play in such a way that it was an entertaining experi-ence for both the cast and the audiences. Credit should also be given to the musicians who provided the musk. Their original compositions blending jazz and rock were some of the strongest aspects of the play. With high hopes, the BDA plans to have an even greater success in the spring, having a larger cast, but still retaining the early morning rehearsals and cast parties, the forgotten lines, and the friendships whkh made A Thurber Carnival a rewarding experience. Only an incidental reflection, of course, on the Blake student body is that the Paperback Book Store's biggest sellers were MADs and books of a sex education nature. However, also selling well were Catcher in the Rye and J.R.R. Tolkien's trilogy, Lord of the Rings. Draw what conclusions you might, if indeed, you believe that we are what we buy. Rather disconcerting is the fact that many students didn't purchase any books at all from this store. Perhaps it is because the P.B.B.S. does not carry most of the books the Blake English department holds in high esteem and requires its students to read. Is it conceivable that many Blake students read only those books that are required? Banish the thought .. Second Hand Bookstore For the young Blake entrepreneur who had the foresight to buy stock, the Second Hand Book Store was once again a gold mine, paying a 10% dividend on the orignal investment annually. Unfortunately, buyers can purchase a maximum of only $10 worth of stock. Although not one of the larger or more active organizations, the Blake Second Hand Book Store did have a successful year and did manage to continue to contribute to the Blake Scholarship Fund for Blake's AFS student, Monis Bcrahas from Greece. Jnut B M.„on Literary Club To keep pace with current educational trends, the Literary Club broke out of its cocoon and opened its doors to the female sex. Although the doors were kept open throughout the season , interest from the girls at Northrop seemed to slacken toward the end of the year. The majority of the meetings throughout the year were held at member's houses. Some came to eat Fritos and just sit back and listen; others came to share their poetry and good-nature. Many times, as notebooks and mimeos were laid aside, thoughts were considered along different lines other than those oriented around literature. It can be said, however, that good times were had by all True to form and custom, the Club produced the school's literary magazine, the Talisman, in the spring of '71, deriving its material from both faculty and students of Blake and Northrop. 181 Photography Club: They Shoot Pictures Don't They? r-f R Wilstr, Indritz, Sherman, Labounta It's A Forum Of Speech Seeking to fullfill his belief that forums should be a mixture of cultural, educational, and entertainment programs. Forum Committee Chairman, Todd LaBounta guided the forum presentations to include a wide variety of topics. Forums included harpsicordist William Reed, ecology expert Ronald Gray, and the presentation of a 1923 film classic, “Our Hospitality , starring Buster Keaton. Arthur Kleiner, who played for silent films back in the '20's, accompanied this presentation. In the Winter and Spring Terms the committee presented Governor Wendell Anderson, a Twin Cities broadcaster, an ecology slide presentation, and combined with the Glee Club to present the Notre Dame de Sion Glee Club from Kansas City. 183 FRONT ROW: C. This year two Blake men placed in the Taylor's Falls slalom race. In the winter, the paddlers churn the pool's water, practicing rolls and doing sprints for the annual Blake School Pool Slalom. During the spring, the paddlers shoot rapids on the Kettle and Wolf Rivers and compete in heavy water.
