SENIORS SENIOR Art Marcozzi ..,YYYY,YYY,,,,..Y. Y..YYY.,YVV P resident Bill Stockdale ..,, Mid Bergman . Roger Dettorre Miss Turner OFFICERS President Vice Secretary Treasurer Adviser WE CONGRATULATE THE GRADUATING SENIORS AND WISH THEM GODSPEED We were both proud and frightened that eventful day in September of T942 when we entered Blairsville High School as freshmen. How embarrassed we were when we got lost trying to find our classrooms, The laughter of the upperclassmen was even more humiliating. However, our greenness soon began to fade and we became accustomed to high school life. As sophomores we were allowed to elect class officers. We wisely chose George Rowley as president, Paul Fleming as vice president, Eunice Hess as secretary, Bill Stockdale as treasurer, and Miss Fenlon as adviser, We felt very grown-up, when in February we attended our first evening dance, the Sophomore Hop. We shall never forget our iunior year. Under the able direction of Art Marcozzi as president, Paul Fleming as vice president, Mid Bergman as secretary, Bill Stockdale as treasurer, and Miss Dick as advisor, we were able to plan many dances and social affairs. Then came the night we had all been waiting for, April 27 and our Southern Gardens Prom. We danced to the starlight melodies of Lee Kelton amid roses and moonlight. Our thanks go to Miss Dick whose wise planning and assistance made our junior year successful. Our senior year found us more grown-up and serious. Art Marcozzi and Mid Bergman were re-elected as president and secretary respectively, Bill Stockdale served as vice president and Roger Dettorre acted as treasurer. Miss Turner was our capable and friendly adviser. We were kept busy ordering announcements, name cards, and felt goods, and working on the class play, Leave lt To Grandma. June 4, that long awaited commencement night came sooner than we had anticipated. Now we leave our carefree school days behind us and look forward into a bright and successful world of tomorrow. WE MEET THE STUDENT TEACHERS HOME ECONOMICS STUDENT TEACHERS Blairsville has co-operated with the Home Eco- nomics Department, State Teachers College, Indiana, Pennsylvania in permitting practice Teachers to meet state requirements by serving here under the super- vision of Mrs. Virginia T. We began the year by electing these capable oft cers from our classmates: Jay Grumbling, president, Elio Calabrese, vice president, Gail McCombs, treasurer, and Gwen Bailey, secretary. Miss VVirdzek was chosen as our adviser. Along with our drive for dues, a bake sale, a hayride, and a skating party were held in order to raise money for the main event ot the year, our own Sophomore Hop. Everyone worked hard tor it, and was well repaid at the dance where we all had a grand time. In April the class put on an assembly program under the direction of Miss Hfmrneger, Eng- lish teacher. Our class contributed many to the band, those twirling batons were Barbara Cyphers, head maior- ette, Dorothy Grdgon, Anita Spiardi, and lome Sm'th, the musicians included Percy Moore, W. A. On the Jay Vee team, composed largely of sophomores, were Nick Vladic, Ed Yoschak, Bob Miller, Nelson Rager, Al Pesci, Bob Streeter, Glenn Baron, Bill Graff, Tony D'Attilio, Gail M:Combs, Fred McGowan, and Freddie McGowan. ln varsity basketball we cheered for Jim Grott, Jay Grumbling, Bob Miller, Bob Streeter, Nelson Rager, and Elio Calabrese. WE SHAKE HANDS WITH THE FuTuRE There was confusion everywhere those first few days in September for the green freshies. Getting ourselves lost in hallways and entering wrong classrooms were common occurences. For us, the iunior rooms and especially the senior rooms 103, 104, and 105, were places of mystery-sacred holies into which we peered as chance offered. After the Sophomores had done their worst in an initiation, we felt that we really belonged. Our subjects studied seemed more difficult this year, perhaps because we were freshies. Algebra was diFficult for many of us, but we enjoyed English, General Science, and Civics. Our class has been well represented in all school activities. Our musicians in the band were Sally Anderson, James Baugman, Bill Burd, Peggy Ann Cohen, Joanne Cummings, Shirley Davies, Dorile DeLuca, Page Diven, and Murray Williamson. The activities representatives were Joanne Cummings, Nancy Gasbarro, Genevieve McDonald, Edna Louise McLaren, and Mary Jane Wilkinson. Ronald Christopher and Richard Lukehart played on the varsity football squad and on the Jay Vee basketball team were John McCurdy, Jack Gloor, and Bill Clement, managed by Donald Petrarca. Freshman chorus members who helped to present a delightful Christmas program included Thelma Beard, FRESHMEN ROOM 206 ROW I-E. Shabella, J. Bollinger, M. L. Crawford, M. J. Stuart, F. Rosenthal, H. Living up to its past traditions, the Blairsville High School band has completed another year of service to both school and community. Made up of students who have had at least one year of musical instructions, the membership approximated titty-nine in the marching band and seventy-five in the concert band this year. Letters for music are presented during the junior year to band members who have served three years in either one of the bands. Bowing out eight retiring senior loandmembers, eight juniors received their music letter during a late spring assembly. This group included Lucille Butler, Joan Bennett, James Dovvden, Harry Fairley, Ruth Faith, Louis Iezzi, John Moliterne, and Charles Moore. In addition to playing for football games, basketball games, and pre- senting a chapel program in the early part of the school year, the band participated in various community parades. During the football games, the marchers paid tribute to the visiting teams as they torrned gigantic alphabets representing the respective visiting school. The American Legion entertained the Blairsville High School Band at the Legion Home on December l9, with a banquet that vvas enjoyed by all. The football season has ended and the band is making preparations for the annual spring concert to be presented on May 3. This program enables the members to study band literature of arious types. Since the war is over, the district and state festivals have been resumed. Blairsville was well represented at the All-County Festival on April 27, the District on May 4, and the All-State on May 28. TALENTED SINGERS ARE FouND IN outa CHORUS Sweet music filled our high school auditorium throughout the year adding much enjoyment to our school activities. The chorus with Mr. Zener, as director, is responsible for this cultural addition to our school curriculum. On December 20, the chorus members presented an appropriate Christmas per- formance in the high school auditorium. Supplementing the background of beautiful Christmas music was the oratory given by Mary Lou Clark. That evening the chorus presented an equally well received program at the Methodist Church. The operetta Star Flower, presented March first, received a resounding ovation of applause for a presentation well done. The program of music studied this year varied greatly. Of especial mention are The Lord's Prayer, Ave Maria, This ls My Country, and I Dream Of You. The chorus departed from traditional custom this year in presenting a separate spring concert from that of the band, in former years they were combined as one. The success of the plan this spring will undoubtedly lead to the plan being followed in years to come. Blairsville High School was represented by Qi members at the All-County Music Festival at State Teachers College, Indiana, Pennsylvania on May 4, l946, where the ability of our chorus compared very favorably with those of other competing high schools attending the festival. The problem Grandma Norfleet had to solve was the securing of a ten thousand dollar loan for her grandson from an eccentric, old Herman Knox, who believed that civilazation ended with the automobile. Herman, who hated the way modern people lived, agreed to lend the money to young Vic Hayes if Vic could show him one good old fashioned grandmother who didn't pay golf all day.. lt seemed to Vic and his wife Carol that the money was in the bag when they got word that his grandmother and sister were coming for a visit, but in the middle of their act of lavender and old lace, Dolly, the maid, ignorant of the situation, spilled the beans. Determined to secure the loan, Grandma sends for young Beverly O'Day. To- gether, they decide that Beverly will flirt with Herman and act as though she were on his side. She tells Herman that one way to get even with the Hayes' would be to steal their maid. Together they stage a mock proposal to show Abe, the gardener, howto propose to Dolly. When they have hnished their supposed act, Beverly claims she is in earnest about the proposal and unless Herman gives her ten thousand dollars she'll sue him. Herman gives the money and the play ends happily when he learns to play golf. Adviser WE VIEW WITH PRIDE THE PROMOTORS The Hi-Y Club has again been organized this year under the very active advisership of Mr. Clyde Porter. The club has had a very successful year obtaining a club membership of about thirty iunior boys in addition to the twenty-five senior members who joined last year. The Hi-Y organization has as its aim the guiding of high school boys to a more Christian fellowship ideal and the building of manly characteristics in its members for a better school. A lively initiation was given the new members into the organization during the latter part of February. At a business meeting Paul Fleming was chosen as president and Agene Gibson was selected as treasurer. The Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y were co-hosts at a banquet and a dance held in May for the members and their friends. OF A SOUND BODY AND A CLEAN MIND Devoting the year to good manners, the Tri-HQ-Y, under the super- vision ot its new sponsor, Miss Elvira Bontempo, had a most suc- cessful and active year. The club members met once a month under the guidance of their president, Helen Stiles, to discuss and plan their social activities. The new members were selected and ushered through the tra- ditional initiation exercises in September and became full-pledged members ot the club. The aim of each member of the club is to build a better world in which she will strive to render services to the home, the school, and the church. The social events of these girls were many during the year. A wiener roast was held tor new members the night ot the initiation, the girls attended the Tri-Hi-Y Rally at lndiana, and they sold candy and hot dogs at our football games. As part at their tribute to good manners, Sadie Hawkins Day was celebrated on December l3 when the Tri-Hi-Y girls asked their Little Abners, Will you go to the movie with me? and the girls re- vealed the height at good manners when they called tor the boys at their homes, helped them with their coats, took them to the movies, and then to Dean's for a late snack, The evening will be remembered as one of the most enjoyable of the school year. Two meetings are held a month, one is the business meeting, the other is a French Play given during the activity period, not only for French students, but for the entire student body. Some French students are writing to students of France as members of the International Correspondent Organization. USHERS Ready and wliling to be of service to all, those friendly senior girls, as ushers, stand at the doors of the high school auditorium and meet everyone with a cheerful smile. They served as ushers for the Rotary speakers, the opereta, the class play, and for any other public or school activity that took place. Ushers for the following year are chosen from the Junior class in the late spring. LATIN CLUB The Latin Club, sponsored by Miss Turner, is composed of upperclassmen and freshmen who maintain a class average of eighty-five per cent. The club members observed the old Roman festivals of the month at their meetings to learn the customs of Roman life. Among the many activities of the year were a chapel program, a visit to Buhl Plane- tarium, and the annual banquet closing the social events of the year. HIKING CLUB The Hiking Club is an unorganized activity composed of eighteen members and its ad- viser, Miss Marguerite Dick. To promote physical activity in a social atmosphere, to encourage these young girls to take an interest in the outdoors, and to participate in hiking and other sports are the aims of the club. The girls this year enioyed hikes to Funk's Hole, to Altman's Run, to Campbell's Mill, and to watch the evening airmail pick-up. They fully enjoyed their many outdoor iaunts. LEFT TO RIGHT-L. The full name of this organization is the Future Business Leaders of America, a regularly organized and constitued chapter of the national group. Membership is restricted to students enrolled in the Business Education curriculum here who are interested in commercial subiects. The objectives of the club provide for the discovery and development of possible business leaders of the future, thus the sponsors are greatly interested in the potential ability of all students in this curricular group. The local chapter of F. B. L. A. was organized and initiated here in 1943 with M'ss Elsie Garlow, head of the Business Education De- partment, as the faculty sponsor. The group holds regular business meetings monthly at which time outside speakers are invited to address members on related topics in the business world. The organization sponsored the sale of government bonds and stamps this year in which over 590,000 were sold in the community. The amount raised entitled the district to receive credit for thirty hos- pital units which were presented at Deshon Hospital, Butler, Pennsyl- vania on January 7, 1946 in the presence of representatives of the group. This club has enjoyed a very successful year and great credit must be given to the officers, sponsor, and the individual members for participating so fully in the activities and proiects. F. B. L. A. As adviser of the association, she stood on the stage and really gave us a super sales talk about the new activity system and its advan- tages. By joining the activities, we found that our investment was not in vain. Students joining the activities before September 21 paid four dollars while 'those ioining later paid four dollars and fifty cents. The members, on presenting their activity cards, were able to enter football 'and basketball games, wrestling meets, the class play, and they also received a school newspaper subscription and a bargain rate on the BLAIRE. An activity card was issued to each member replacing the countless number of tickets previously issued for each activity. These cards were collected at each activity and returned to the student the following school day. It not only avoided a lot of confusion by doing away with tickets, but also eliminated bringing money each week for payments. It also made deflnite the number of.copies of the school paper to be published each week by the Blair-Hi News Staff. This association hnances the athletic equipment and helps to support school entertainments. The new system is worthy of honorable mention and we hope it will continue to function smoothly for school affairs in the future years. ROW I-N. Palmer, M. J. Wilk inson, C. Clement, H. This committee, under the supervision of Miss Garlow, is composed of two students from each grade including freshmen, sophomores, iuniors, and seniors, affording equal class representation. A regular meeting was held during the activity period once each month at which time a plan tor the entertainment of the student body at B. H. S. was worked out for the coming month. A certain class or section was chosen for a special chapel session and the plans were so checked that all the programs were interesting and entertaining for all students. A different member of the committee lead the opening exercise tor each of the special programs. There are six girls and two boys under the guidance of Miss Bontempo. This is her tirst year of sponsoring the cheerleaders. A number of pep meetings in chapel and a play called Going My Way have created great interest and enthusiasm in this activity. Miss Bontempo has been very successful in introducing many new cheers for Blairsville's football and basketball teams. Whether the games are at home or away, our cheerleaders are always there to help the team win its victory. The members of the squad are Eunice Hess, Dolores Asper, Shir- ley Campbell, Dorothy Grambling, Marilyn Marshall, Dorothy Truxal, Ned Rager, and .lim Gilmore. Eunice Hess and Dolores Asper, giving three years service, will be missed after their graduation in June. VARSITY MEN MERIT PRAISE JOE SANSONETTI Spike . . . Quarterback . . . WRESTLING Blairsville High School launched its wrestling season at home by meeting the Greensburg matmen in the tirst tilt of the season. De- spite fighting hard, we went down to a close ten to seven defeat. The second home match brought the top-notch Waynesburg team here. Showing a great deal of class, they out-wrestled the locals fourteen to two. Traveling to Greensburg our grapplers reversed their previous loss to that team by winning twenty-two to twenty for our first win. After tasting victory, the Bobcats weren't to be denied again and defeated Kiski twice in home-and-home contests, twenty-nine to eighteen and twenty-five to fourteen. Scanning the records, we note that the wrestlers won three and lost two for a fairly good seasonal average. THLETICS WIN INTEREST OF GIRL GIRL GYM CLASSES During the Hrst semester, folk dances were very popular with the Virginia Reel rating the top position. When weather permited outside sports, baseball was pre- valent. With cold weather coaxing us back into the gymnasium in late fall, cali- sthenics were introduced, we formed bas- ketball teams and for a few weeks compe- tition among teams was the main interest. The second semester found each class divided into squads, eager and willing to participate in relays or any other activity which would enable them to earn points. These points were given in various activi- ties and for correct gym attire. The annual volleyball tournament is al- ways looked forward to with great antici- pation by all competing teams. The tourna- ment this year began the first of March and lasted until the end of April. The rnost skilled players were selected as members of the teams with each one choosing its own name. The Wildcats showed their great ability in playing volleyball by suc- cessfully winning the championship for their four years in high school. After the volleyball season ended, we engaged in tumbling in which we specialized in hand- stands, soniersaults, and various other stunts. Gym class develops a friendy spirit of co-operation and competition in sports- both intramural and varsity, and teaches good sportsmanship by living it. 5 NR SENICDRS EXEMPLIFY THAT , M f, W -43, , S S A :i 0 alfa! ,L -a 5 A K .7 fr' We Q? . 5 3 .. qZ , Q ' ffjWi3i2i5f3L1.gf2' i 1 sf1gfSsi5'fi,,f'f Q W ii xi' E A :mes e T J f andwmsf its paw: Ta L .fy qv, ' ami?
