HARRY Wn.soN Yve are proud to recognize here the Blairsville Board of Education, an efficient force in controlling the affairs of our Alma Mater. This group of respected citizens are ever competent in providing for our comfort and progress. hir. YVilson, former graduate of B.H.S. and present county commissioner's clerk, is president of the organization. The quiet fwr. Elrick, a railroader, is presiding officer of the teacher's com- mittee. Mr. Thompson, a one-time teacher, now holds the position of chief accountant at Torrance State Hospital. Mr. Shick, who carried the pigslcin for the Bobcats in earlier days, manages the Ford Garage. A jolly good fellow, Mi'. Piper, is an employee of the Pennsylvania Railroad. The faithful secretary of many years is lVTrs. Turner. All of these members are deeply interested in young people and in school and community affairs. Thus, you see, because they have had a wide range of experience and are moved by a sincere desire to help, they are an able and ready body. May we, therefore, in this accredited space, offer our most grateful thanks. Let us show them, fellow students, that we are capable of making use of the privileges they have set before us. 9 The Conductors . We are proud of our 159 members and of their achievements. Those first few days in September were full of excitement, with students getting lost and walking into the wrong rooms. Nlost of us agreed that algebra class with its negatives, positives, and equations was the most depressing period of the day. English seemed to be the best-liked subject. Despite these handicaps, quite a few names appeared on the honor roll during the first semester. Those whose averages were all 90'Z, or over were Louise Ellen Iohnson, Nlarilyn Keil, Ioan Noble, Victor Sandberg, and Frances Urban. With all the hard work we didn't forget out- side activities. Our chorus members included Gwendolyn Bailey, Verta Mae Beard, Lois Bench, Vilma Bertoncine, Mary Dettorre, Doro- thy Petrarca, Beatrice Dorazio, Phyllis Fails 54 Ioan Noble, Peggy Pender, Sara Randolph, Dolores Rowley, Grace Wadding, Sally Wlest, Betty Hoover, Francis Ioyce, Betty Keller, Ethel Longneclcer, Iulia Nlagowan and Ruth Miller. Gui' musicians in the band were Leonard Luchsinger, Bob Vance, Gail Wleinell, Nlarilyn Keil, Ralph Nlaskrey, Robert Streeter, YN. A, Reed, Bob Dunlap, lohn Campbell, Percy Moore, Paul McKee, Gail Nlccombs, Clayton Culbertson, Bob lVlcClellen, and lohn Yelenic. We are proud of Bob Mcclellen who helped the lVloonlight Serenadersn with his swell drumm- ing. Activities representatives were Beatrice Dora- zio, Vivien Kin, Sally West, lack Luchsinger, and Genevieve Stopa. ln basketball we all cheered hard for lay Grumbling, who played some outstanding games on the varsity squad. On the lay Vee team f Freshman Flats were lim Grolit, Bob Streeter, Everett Pesci, Holm Aliller, and Bob Dunlap. The mat-men were Charles Constantino, Robert Delcoco, anal Victor DeRubis. The freshman home room 205 came out on top in the war homl drive anal proudly clisplaxvecl a large llag in the room. The English classes in charge of Nliss Gillingham helcl a chapel program which was enjoyed very much. Room 106 was a lively home room with lim Gilmore, Neal Rager, Pere-v Nloore, and Anita Spiarmli helping it along. Frances Urban and Frances Smith, both new this year, were a steacltv twosome, and Gwenie Bailey, Ioan Noble, anal lfleanor Alazzoni were seen together almost all the time. Xve are all anxious to come back next -vear as sophomores and really be able to consider ourselves upperclassmen. fill: GRADE 202 K CAFE Row l, T. llownrnl, R, lk-Grllttnln, R. Gnlvelli, M. With the coming of the dummy the work began, to fill the empty spaces with pictures and words that should illustrate school life at its best. The statt, with Mazie Hosack, editor, Nlary Lou Wlitmer, associate editor, and Miss Nlicio, advisor, set them- selves to the assignment. This involved handing out assignments, photography, picture identitication, and typing of copy. Art editor and sports editors were respectively Vivian Rosenthal, Ottavio Frattini, and Ioanne Grumbling. Lois Gillingham was re- sponsible for the senior write-ups and Crissie Rook turned out the faculty write-ups. The iunior repre- sentatives, Nora Wilkixiscxn and Lois Ann Ankney, have rightfully made for themselves a place on next year's stall. Advertising was in charge of Bob Robinson and Bill Shick, and Philomena Dettorre handled finances. The balance of the stall' worked equally well and earnestly to produce a well-organized book. Blau'-Hi News Are the stories in? Have the dummys been handed in to be typed? How many more pages are there to run oft? These are some ot' the many questions you hear back and forth before an issue ot' the Blair- lli-News is distributed. With the help of Ioan Smith, editor: Lois Gilling- ham, associate-editorg and lVlisses Rodgers and Garlow, advisors, the Blair-Hi-News was given out bi-weekly. Seven hundred copies are sent to service men in the United States and overseas. lVlost of these boys are graduates or were at one time students of Blairsville High. Former faculty members are also included. Miss Rodgers gave a Christmas Party tor the staff. This party was spent answering the letters of the servicemen who had written to the stall. An annual banquet was held at the end of the year. At the beginning of the school year the stall' voted on the goals of the Blair-Hi-News. They are: 1. To be the voice of the entire student body. 2. The Tri-Hi-Y packed boxes for the Iunior Red Cross to be sent to the needy children in foreign countries in Europe. Small and useful articles were put into these boxes such as barrettes, wash clothes and small toys. Some of our less fortunate children of the community were cheered by a Christmas party the club gave for them. The social activities of these girls were many during the year. The Blairsville Chapter ofthe F. B. L. A. was the first one organized in Pennsylvania. In twenty-one states this club is represented. Each year the group is responsible to the national organization for a definite project. This year, under the capable leadership of Miss Elsie G. Garlow, commercial supervisor, and its president, Lois Paterson, the F. B. L. A. met a two- fold state military objective. The first was having 9072, of the students buy bonds and stamps by November 11. But IOOW was bought and the high school was awarded the 1002, flag. The F. B. L. A. also sponsored a bond drive to raise 812,000 to buy a L. C. V. P. This drive went over the top and 364,590 was the grand total when the campaign ended on December 7. With this, two L. C. V. P.'s two trainer planes, and one half track were bought. Some of the activites which helped to put the drive over were floats representing every home room in the Armistice Day parade, sale of defense stamp Corsages at the Blairsville-Derry Boro football game, and a door- to-door canvass by the members of the F. B. L. A. Tin can collections are also part of the clubs activities. They are collected the last Wednesday in every month. In the second semester, sales of bonds and stamps were pushed for the outfitting of our fighting men with clothing and full equipment. F. B. L. A. Lois Paterson ..... Pauline Moorhead. . , . , . . Culbertson. Basketball With Porter as head coach for the second year, Blairs- ville started the season off with a bang by lacing Avon- more 65-20. This was followed by easy victory over Bell Township 48-18. The home town quintet met its stiffer opposition when the local rivals from Homer Cit and lndiana arrived but Blairsville won from botli lndiana county teams 26-19 and 52-24 respectively. The Bobcats suffered their tirst defeat in a return game with Homer City with the score 50-26. The first league encounter with Derry Boro was copped by our lads 54-24. ln meeting Mount Pleasant the Bobcats were handed its second setback 18-28. Blairsville thumped East Huntington the following week 54-20 before the league-leading Ligonier Mounties sunk the Bobcats 21-59. Hurst took the next thriller from our boys 55-52. Blairsville regained its strength by whipping Derry Township and taking Indiana and Avonmore for the second time this season. Starting the second half of the league, Derry Boro and Mount Pleasant struck hard to win two more games over the local five. 'Then reversing the situation the Bobcats took East Huntington easily, upset the much favored Ligonier 54-51 and won from Hurst 58-20. Showing greater improvement Derry Township handed the Porter men a shallacking in the following game. The last three non-league games brought Blairsville on top, twice over Commodore and once over Bell Township. Blairsville was defeated in the tirst round of the lndiana County Tourney to Homer City 29-58. The squad show a record of 15 wins and 8 losses.
