Prophecy It is the year 1974. Blairstown, Iowa is no longer a dot on the map. Ten years have molded this small town into a metropolis of over one million people. It is my job as roving reporter of the Daily Blab to report news of the town. My day usually begins by boarding a local bus that takes me safely to my many destinations. Just as the bus begins to leave the depot, a late comer is seen waving madly at us to stop the bus. Why it's that famous sports-caster, Lanny Moore, who brings us those thrilling Sunday Sports Spectaculars such as the Austrailian 'Breath Holding Tourney. He explains that he is preparing a trip to Philadelphia where he will interview Jim Hinkel and Larry Meyer, both prominent stars in baseball. Jim pitches for the Philadelphia Phillies while Larry does the Wheaties and Vitalis commercials. Riding past the Me Too Store, we see John Schaub, the all-time career grocery carry-out boy. John is working hard, saving money, and driving the family car. We now approach the Benton Community School. Five very private s e c r e t a r i e s, Charlotte Jackson, Lola Thompson, Dorothy Christopher, Pat Kimm, and Dianne Heitshusen are busily taking notes as the officials of the School Board rapidlydictate. My first interviews are with two verypopular teachers in the local school system. Janet Whitworth, teacher of vocal and instrumental music, and Mrs. Dave Glime, the former Rita Siek, comment on their delightful jobs. As the National Health Laboratory comes into view, l think of the great contribution that well-known scientist, Chuck Ohlen, recently presented to the American public. He has produced a king-size filter that is 907, effective because 902, of the cigarette is filter. My next interview is with an undis- covered f'star in the community, Janet Coffland. She stars every day in an original production, Days of Running Noses, at her farm house. Janet and Dean Rieck are happi- ly married with 3 little Riecks as their co- stars. As we come back to town an infernal racket of loud pipes and screaming tires follow us. I turn to look and I see Dean Shetler, who now owns the Woerner Oil company division. Now we pass the local hospital andnotice the new zooming clinic and its many patients. Mrs. Terry Allers, the forme r Joleen Heitshusen, is the head nurse and helping her in any daily chores are Nurse Garlinda Gage and Nurse Nancy Keegan. I stop at city hall and before leaving, I interviewed Army Private lst Class, of the 147th Mess Kit Repair Company, John Niebuhr. Again I leave Blairstown to interview another prominent farmer, who runs Duncalf Hill Farm. l talked to Dave andnoticed some- thing behind the barn. It is the 1949 Chevy that Dave is going to put the last tire on and get running one of these days. I seem to have just enough time to stop and make an appointment at the local beauty salon. Two famous hairdressers, Diane Voss and Carol Wardenburg, operate and own this salon and style coiffures for women. I take time to chat with Professor Ron Niebes, of the University of Blairstown. His latest discovery is called Sniff, better known as timepills that stop sniffles and runny noses. Professor Niebes also informs me of the progress of scientists, Merrill Mecklenburg and Danny Walter, and their research on the Bordens Test Farm. My last interview of the day is with Mr. Chiang-Kai-Cash, better known as Dick Neumeg, who has just been chosen Chinese Restaurant Owner of the Year. My busy day has come to a close andl hope that you have enjoyed my guided tour. Class Histoiry We have now climbed the 12 stairs, one step at a time and always forward, andl am now looking backward at our first school days. The Kindergarten class of 1951 were very excited about moving into the new build- ing. Among those carrying their little chairs to their new room were: Sharlyn Becker, Dorothy Christopher, Janet Coffland, Dianne Heitshusen, C h a r l o t t e Jackson, N a n c y Keegan, Patricia Kimm, Edith Sears, Rita Siek, Loretta Stoddard, Lola Thompson, Diane Voss, Carol Wardenburg, Janet Whitworth, Susan Mooney, David Duncalf, James Hinkel, Merrill Mecklenburg, Larry Meyer, Lanny Moore, Ronald Niebes, John Niebuhr, Charley Ohlen, John Schaub, Richard Stoddard, Dennis Stratton, Daniel Voss, and Danny Walter. In first grade, the first step of our climb, roll call was also answered by Charles Hinchcliffe. The next step was second grade. Roll call was answered by three new classmates: Patricia Johnson, William Ohlen, and Kenneth Stoddard. However, we also lost three former classmates: Charles Hinchcliffe, Edith Sears, and Susan Mooney. The third step was almost missed by one little boy when he threw a book at the second grade teacher. However, we all stepped for- ward and gained two more classmates:Robert Colvin and Kathryn Close. During fourth grade we lost Patricia Johnson and Richard Stoddard. Michael Tesar was a new classmate. The Fourth grade class was very disappointed that year when Sally, their salamander, froze. Fifth grade roll call was not answered by Kathryn Close and Dorothy Christopher. Tlhe first semester Janet J inderich joined our c ass. During Sixth grade we gained Dorothy Christopher and Garlinda Gage, and lost Kenneth Stoddard, Dennis Stratton, and Daniel Voss. The two steps in Junior High were two of the most difficult. Everyone worked hard and made the step forward. The Seventh grade roll call was answered by the same 28 students. During Eighth grade, we lost Michael Tesar and Robert Colvin. The big step into High School was made by the same group. Roll call wa s also answered by Joleen Heithusen. On the tenth stair we lost Loretta Stoddard. l remember roll call was also answered by Dean Shetler. I Almost to the top! The eleventh year in school was a favorite by many in our class. The class remained the same the lst se- mester, Bill Ohlen left the 2nd semester. We have now reached the final step on the stairs in our thirteen years of general education. The graduates are: Dorothy Christopher, Janet Coffland, David Duncalf, Garlinda Gage, Dianne Heitshusen, Joleen Heitshusen, James Hinkel Charlotte Jackson, Nancy Keegan, Patricia Kimm, Merrill Mecklenburg, Larry Meyer, Lanny Moore, Ronald Niebes, John Niebuhr, Richard Nuemeg, Charley Ohlen, John Schaub, Dean Shetler, Rita Siek, Lola Thompson, Diane Voss, Danny Walter, Carol Wardenburg, Janet Whitworth. We have now reached a landing in our climb up the unending stairs of the past, present, and future. Manyof us plan to further our education, and others plan to work. As we continue on, one step at a time, and always forward. I want to wish the class of 1964 the Best of Luck. Baccalaureate Service Processional .........
