T atxf CLASS FRE SHMAN YEAR The class of 1958 entered high school twenty six stron includin four .' A gl E pupils from Johnsonburg, in the fall of 1955. Because the majority of the students were familiar with the building, they were also somewhat familiar with what con- stituted proper .behavior of high school pupils. Consequently there was no occasion to call us Green Freshmen, Our illustrious class settled down to make our first year ayear of scholastic achievements. Members of the class were active in several clubs, and several students engaged in athletics, much to the honor of the school. CLASS OFFICERS President .... ............ Marjorie Kreger SOPHOMORE YE AR Our first year passed by quickly and having amassed considerable knowledge we considered ourselves Educated Sophomores. We looked forward to this, our Sophomore year, with anticipation of many activities, even though the roll had been decreased to eighteen students. Our class achieved fame via The Cat's Meow, the annual Sophomore Dance. We climaxed the year with a field trip to Olympic park. CLASS OFFICERS President . ..... ...... HISTORY JUNIOR YEAR Another year passed and we were a step nearer to our goal. Throughout this year we helped, once more, to bring fame and fortune to our Alma Mater, and once more we were represented in all branches of high school life. With a capable staff of officers, headed by Marjorie Kreger, we sponsored several successful activities, despite the drop in membership. We were now dignified seniors, respected and revered by all our underclassmen, and we looked forward to the many pleasant experiences which were to come. To defray the expenses of the annual Washington trip, we presented a success- ful play, June Mad. We raised funds through our Christmas card project, year- book advertisements and ice cream sales. Climaxing this year was our long awaited trip to Washington, an event which will live in our memory for all time. Now we are at the end of our journey, and there is naught but commencement night remaining before ourjourney is Complete. Inour four years we have accompli- shed much, but that is little compared to what we will do in the future. In our four years of high school we have worked hard, but we have found much enjoyment in what we have accomplished. Page Nineteen 'Sa' QM' S' . .. , x- ATL 5 ff- ' r - 'T' A17 -lx . .1 ' . PROJE C T It is a beautiful June morning in the year 1968 as we blast off from Vanguardia Field aboard the magnificent new rocket, Cloud 9. We watch the surface of the moon disappear and then sit back and relax. Everyone is excited because we are going to visit our friends from the Class of 58. We travel for approximately two hours and then start to descend rapidly. As we look out of the windows, we see the landing field of the new space station rushing up to meet us. After landing, we remain in our seats forfurther instruc- tions. Our pilot, James Sprague, enters the lounge and greets us with a friendly smile. Jim designed Cloud 9 and is the head pilot for La Jupiter Solar Lines. He gives us a brief schedule, and then we descend to the landing field. We are greeted by Joyce Van Scoten who recently received the title Queen of Space. Joyce is our ambassador of Good Will to the planet Venus. She leads us to the Planetary Building where we receive a warm welcome from Gerald Bufis, who is the editor of the Universal Press.Gerald looks very dignified with a small mustache and slightly gray temples, and it is very easy to see why he was chosen Best Dressed Man of the Year. We visit with our friends for an hour and then leave for earth to see the rest of the members of the class. On our way, we enjoy our favorite space programs and eat a very tasty dinner of deep-fried seaweed with algae soup and have a delicious sawdust molasses cake for dessert. We land at a huge rocket field which is owned by Ruth Blunt. Ruth walks out to meet us, followed by five dogs and about fifteen cats. Ruth loves animals, although she is widely known for her successful game hunts in Africa. Ruth shot a fifteen- ton elephant and two lions on a recent safari to Africa besides some other small game. While at the rocket field we visit with Guy Bennett, who is preparing to blast off in his rocket, Gardenia. Guy was recently contracted to landscape the entire moon. We decide to drive to Blairstown, and on our way we stop in at Brice Christian's huge farm. Brice raises dry cows and is the nation's leading producer of powdered milk and dry beef. While there we visit with Blair Smith who is Brice's manager. Blair has been elected the nation's top tractor driver. As we drive along the modern electric highway to Blairstown, abulletin announces the return of Eloise Gebhart, the President of the United States, from her recent trip to Russia. Page Twenty gl IB :gala 6 5 . ff i 2 -2, g XM' 1 ll68ff When we arrive at Blairstown, we stop in to see Judy Ackerson who owns a modern, all-girl factory in which she manufacturers jeeps especially built for girls. They are a beautiful shade of blue, and she calls them Judy's Cuties. To our surprise we find Robert Sandberg, that shy and reserved boy from the Class of 58 in charge of the painting department. Bob shows the girls how to paint the jeepsg and he tells us that he just loves his work. We stop at the theatre to see Michael Simonetti tJames Dean ID, who is appearing in person. We are almost trampled by a group of screaming girls who are trying to obtain his autograph. Roger DePuy, who is at the top of the hit parade with his new Rock-It Music, is going to appear next week. Next, we drive out toahuge garage at the end of town which is owned by James Brown. James is the nation's top sports car driver, but he works at the garage in his spa-re time helping the local boys to build hotrods. We drive to New York to visit with Bruce Christian, who teaches wise sayings and jokes to comedians. Bruce is a very popular hurnorist and appears on many leading television shows. While in New York we visit with Marge Kreger, who is the head brain specialist in New York City's largest hospital. After leaving New York, we drive to Florida to visit with Elaine Burdge. Elaine is a dietitian who helped develop many of our present food supplies from seaweed and sawdust. She tells us that she loves Florida and wrestles alligators for a hobby. Our next stop is in Texas where we visit with Robert Benbrook, who owns hundreds of oil wells. Bob retired when he was twenty-five and is just taking life easy. We drive over to the neighboring ranch to visit with Duane Nolder. Duane owns a large night club in California, but he spends most of his time on the ranch. He certainly did not change much in the past ten years, because his favorite hobby is still collecting pretty girls. We return to Blairstown and board our rocket. We are going to stop over in France to visit Mary Jane Katzenstein, who is the leading hair stylist in Paris. She creates hair styles for French Poodles. Our reunion with the members of the Class of 1958 proved to be a pleasant and memorable experience. We are returning home with a feeling of satisfaction that the Class of '58 has found their niche in a complex society. V ,Q .1 A JUNE MAD Hy P lorence Ryerson and Colin Clements l roeluced under the direction of Mr John W Chamberlain June Mad is el hilarious three act comedy about the problems that all teenagers are ficed with at one time or another lhe characters in the play are all in their early or late teens with the exception of Mr and Mrs Wood Mr Harris andthe maid and handyman The play tikes place in the living room of the Wood s residence during the month of June The peaceful atmosphere of the Wood s household is suddenly turned into a turmoil when Mrs Wood s brother Mervyn returns home from college with his very handsome and wealthy friend Roger Van Vleck Penny the Wood s sixteen year old daughter falls in love with Roger and then the problems start Roger showers affection on Penny arrives home from college Roger drops Penny and starts out to win Julie This leads to some very comicalproblems since Julie is Mervyn s girl Penny decides that the only way that she w1l1w1n Roger back is to try to appear older and more sophisticated No one can understand her especially Chuck Harris who grew up with her Chuck decides that the best thing for boys to do is to ignore girls because they are all crazy He devotes his time to his glider which he built against his father s wishes When his father finds out about this he threatens to destroy it so Chuck is faced with the problem of hiding the glider until he has a chance to fly it In the meantime Mervyn finds out about Roger and Julie and nearly flips To add to his troubles the town s nuisance Milly Lou who is only about twelve decides that she would be a perfect girl for Mervyn She sets out to conquer him therefore she is con stantly following him around and spying on some of the other members of the household Finally everyone sproblems are solved by the thought ful consideration and patience of Doctor and Mrs Wood and Mr Harris We all enjoyed working in the play and put much effort into it to make it a success Our efforts were certainly gratified as the play had a good attendance both nights We wish to again thank the people who purchased ads for our play program and those who assisted us with the productlon of the play 7 . , ' - 1 ' X ' L ' i H I Q 1 3 1 . . One of its greatest undertakings has been the in- auguration of the National Honor Society into the school. The Student Council has high ideals and is mainly concerned with the better- ment of Blairstown High School. The council contributes greatly to the recreational activities of the school by sponsoring movies, dances and assemblies. Another ofthe main undertakings ofthe 1957-1958 Student Council was the cam- paign to purchase a high-fidelity phonograph, records, and a record holder, which have recently been purchased. As a result of the campaign, the Parent-Teacher Association aided the council with the purchase of the high-fidelity equipment. The 1957-1958 Student Council has been a truly successful organization. Josephine Shuster The Photography Club tries to teach its members how to take and develop pictures. We learn how to keep light from entering the film, proper position for taking pictures, and what scene will make good photographing. We travel to different places in the countryside to see if we can find any unusual photo' shots. The fall, winter, and spring give us a variety in taking almost any type of picture. After the pictures are taken we have a dark room where we learn to develop the prints properly. Every member has an opportunity to try his skill in developing the photographs. A used camera was obtained by Mr. Schaare for the use of disassembling and assembling, so that every member of the club could see how a camera actually works. Many books, pamphlets, and other materials are at the disposal of all members. Dues are paid monthly and are used for projects during the year. Specific time was alloted for crafts and handiwork such as knitting, embroider- ing and painting. For recreational purposes we participate in various activities, ice skating, swimming, picnics and parties. We discuss and learn the details of highway safety and driver training The general aims of the club are: to learn the general safety rules and applications thereof, the correct operation, of the motor vehicle, the proper use of the motor vehicle onthe highways, highway courtesy, pedestrian safety, and finally to aid the student in his efforts to become a licensed motor vehicle operator. The qualifications are that the members must be sixteen years of age or over and have a desire to learn the fundamentals of safety. We use the standard text book and the State Driver's Manual for all discussions. Judy Ackerson The Safety Patrol is one of the many important organizations in the school. The members are elected by the older members of the patrol under the supervision of Mr. Roland Chamberlain. The work performed bythe patrol is very essential in the halls as well as on the buses. Patrol members are stationed throughout the school to regulate student traffic and behavior. All buses that deliver students to and from the school are patrolled by student members of the organization. The Safety Patrol is frequently visited by a representative of the State Police. The officer offers valuable and reliable advice and provides safety literature. This was achieved through the expert pitching of Marvin Meshach and Joseph Castellano. Nlarvin Meshach showed exceptional pitching ability in his four years at Blairstown High School and was signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Little Four Trophy was won for the second time. This record can be attri- buted to the excellent coaching of Mr. Schaare, the work of the co-captains, Joyce Van Scoten and Ruth Blunt, and the spirit of the team. The girls really looked like professionals in their newly purchased uniforms, which they received soon after the beginning of the season. Due to the absence of a scorekeeper no records were kept for the first two games of the season.
