Just as I must breathe each breath. Like the color of my skin. Or the day that I grow old. My life is made of patterns that can scarcely be controlled. ------Paul Simon Every Year, as it passes, leaves behind a definite pattern. What was the pattern for the school year of 1967-68, what form did it follow? The pattern was one of contrast. A plaid of black versus white, of premature death in Vietnam versus sustained life in South Africa. The now generation tuned in with Twiggy, mini-skirts, long hair, and Penelope Tree. Psychedelic became the center of the spectrum in color, art, fashion, and music. Gone With the Wind went wide-screen, and the Beatles evolved into Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts' Club Band. The name of the dance was the Bugaloo and the accompanying group was the Jefferson Airplane. Nebraska finished a year of centennial celebration and looked forward to the second hundred years of progress. 58 59 ATHLETICS Back row: Mark Donaldson, Clark Matzen, Doug Harris, Frank Wolff, Kirby Wendt, Lowell Moore, Jerry Kruse, David Warrick, Richard Hansen, Jim Fedde, Mike Wilson, Richard Schneider, Dennis Cordle, Denny Brummer. A team which many thought would be only mediocre proved to be one of the finest in Blair's history. The Bears demonstrated a devastating offensive attack which re- sulted in four or more touchdowns in 9 of the 10 games. Blair's only defeat was suffered at the hands of a tough Omaha Holy Name team on a muddy Benson field. The Bears had to wade through one of the hardest schedules of Coach Lehl's regime, consistently playing rated teams which included four class B all- staters. Due to the postponement of the Ralston game, the Bears played three games in ten days at one stretch. Jim Fedde and Doug Seickmeyer were elected honorary co-captains. The Bears showed their conference supremacy by placing six players on the Northern Division All-Conference team; Denny Brummer, end; Mike Thompson, halfback; Jim Fedde, tackle; Mike Edwards, guard; Mickey Rouse, halfback; and Jerry Kruse, guard. Blair's basketball season was plagued by injuries and illness. The Bears faced a rough twenty-two game schedule and were justly proud of their season record of eleven wins and eleven losses. The basketball season was highlighted by a third-place finish in the Ak-Sar- Ben Conference Tourney and the recording of the one hundredth victory of Coach Rainforth's career. The Varsity squad was made up pre- dominantly of senior lettermen. Returning lettermen from the 1966-67 squad were Lowell Moore, Rich Hansen, Jerry Kruse, Denny Brummer, and Mike Thompson. Wrestling--New and Popular A sport new to Blair this year was wrestling. The overwhelming response it received from students and adults alike assured it of a place in the athletic de- partment for years to come. Due to the fact that the team was not organized until mid-year, the number of possible matches was somewhat limited. However those matches arranged did pro- vide much-needed experience for the new Blair matmen. Coach Chuck Jorgensen looks forward to the prospect of a successful second season with many returning lettermen. Kirby Wendt show his opponent what a predicament really is. 69 9 Track Sets Fast Pace This year along with the ten regular season dual meets, the track team participated in the Ak-Sar-Ben Conference meet and the State-qualifying District meet. Coach John Olson was assisted this year by Coaches Chuck Jorgensen, Jerry Rainforth, and Jim Realph. Freshman coach was Wilbur Clements. Lettermen returning this year were seniors Denny Brummer, Jim Feede, Rich Hansen, Lowell Moore, Dan Thompson, Rick Voss; juniors Richard Anderson, Mick Rouse, Mike Thompson, Pat Thompson, David Warrick, Frank Wolff; and sophomore Dennis Kubie. Mike Edwards hurls the shot-put during track prac- tice. Weariness sets in as Dan Thompson makes final lap well ahead of the pack. Coach John Olson, Greg Derry, Dennis Kubie, Rick Voss, Bob Blobaum, and Steve Adams. Cross Country Conference Runners-up Bob Blobaum and Rick, Voss don sweatsuits for cross country warm-up. The cross-country teom provided Coach John Olson with much satisfaction in his first year at Blair High School. The team placed second in the Ak-Sar-Ben Confei ence Meet, third in the district meet, and tenth in the state meet. Dennis Kubie did an outstanding job for Blair by placing third in the conference and fourth in the dis- trict meet. Lettermen this year were Rick Voss, senior; Steve Adams and Greg Derry, juniors; and Dennis Kubie and Bob Blobaum, sophomores. Also participating were Wayne Anderson, Steve Baker, Bob Frahm, Rick McDonald, Tom Neilsen, and Carl Paine. 71 Gary Finn keeps his eyes on the ball. Golf Offered as Spring Sport Mark Harrison follows through on ashortputt. On this year's squad, Mr. Carlsen had only three of his last year's lettermen. They competed in the eight dual meets during the regular season, the Ak-Sar- Ben Conference meet, and the District meet.
