Many happenings always take place at good ole B.H . S. during the course of a year, and each year a staff of industrious people are on hand attempting to record everything in an interesting way which will recall vivid pictures to your mind for years to come. We ofthe TATTLER staff have worked hard this year but have nevertheless enjoyed ourselves greatly. On a typical Tuesday evening the staff usually began to arrive at about seven o'clock . Our head- quarters were in the Junior High library this year. Here we setup shop, laid out our materials, and be- gan drawing, writing, laying out pages, and what- ' have-you. Everything usually went quite smoothly, ,, but on occasion we did have our little misfortunes like everyone else. First, there was the night some of us pasted practically all the Freshman pictures on the wrong sheet of paper. Needless to say we spent the last half of the meeting carefully undoing the work we had done the first half and pasting the pictures on the proper sheet. Then, on another night a table was knocked over, spilling ink on several layout sheets that were ready to send in. However, in spite of these mishaps, which later seemed amusing, we usually managed to accomplish something. Many new challenges were presented to the staff this year because of the new style of book we are now adopting. We believe that we have met them success- fully however. New ideas were used and represent- atives were even sent to the Nebraska State High School Press Association Convention at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. This book is the result of a combined effort on the part of all our staff members. It took the cooper- ation of everyone, whether he wrote, laid out pages, took pictures, or planned and supervised, in order to assemble the TATTLER this year and, having accomp- lished this, we are now looking forward eagerly to the prospect of TATTLERS which will be published in suc- ceeding years. GENE BAUMERT And Facult Their profession was instruction. To this purpose they were wholly dedicated. ln the course of the years gone by and the years to come, students were and will be exposed to many different methods of education ---- some modern and some not so modern. But most likely, each method will have the same goals, each lecture a lesson, every assignment a purpose, each good example another step toward good character, and every eighth period a lesson in responsibility. The faculty and administration are well aware of their powers of influence. They do their jobs quietly and efficiently, often without spoken gratitude or even mindful thanks. Appreciation sometimes shows up years later, when we are in college or iust plain out of high school. Appreciation most often shows itself in the good student. But too often, we don't stop and think ---- we don't stop and say, Thank you! Student Council This group of students who represent the many organizations and classes of Blair High are the true backbone of our school. These are the industrious Student Council members who have worked very diligently this last year to create a better and more worthwhile atmosphere between the faculty and students. Each year the group participates in such activities that aid the com- munity as well as the school. This year they held a March oF Dimes Dance with the proceeds going to the New March of Dimes, and among other things sponsored the Homecoming Dance, sold refreshments during Semester Exams, decorated the halls at Christmas time, and sold folios, pencils, notebooks, and book covers. Honors Convocation, Career Day and College Night, and introducing special programs during the year were other important activities sponsored by the group. You could usually find them meeting in the Study Hall at noon listen- ing to Susan Stricklett, President, Cliff Staben, Vice-President, or Pam Wilson, Secretary-Treasurer give a report, while they vigorouslymunched on sandwiches and other lunch-sack goodies. All in all, this Council of Blair High students completed a very re- warding year for all those concerned. It is the hope of this group that they in some way have contributed to the good of the whole school. The Dramatics Club better known as the Strollers Club was newly organized into a definite group of B.H.S. students who have set their goals as to provide entertainment for the school and community, programs for meetings, and to learn the art of presenting a good play. During the year they worked with make-up and various techniques of acting vinich were presented at their monthly meetings. Each year the club entertains those persons who are interested in dra- matics with a number of programs. These are both beneficial and con- structive purposes far the group. Some examples of their fine ability for acting were found in variety night, speech contest, and one-act plays contest. Their meetings held at night found the group listening i?i to Mr. Nelson, their well-qualified sponsor who gave his all to the kids who have appreciated his ability and patience. Future Homemakers 0 Amerlca We should have some really good homemalcers in the next few years if the Future Homemakers of America continue to do as good work in the future as they have done this year. This group of hard-working high school girls has done much to help better the community through their many service proiects. They have also sponsored some very enioyable activities for their fellow classmates. The activity which is probably most familiar to everyone is the Valen- tine Dance, sponsored annually by the F.H.A. This is one of the biggest dances of the year. The girls always see to it that the gym is beautifully decorated. Refreshments are also provided by club members. Highlights of the year for those who belong to this organization are the United Nations Banquet, with mothers as the honored guests and Daddy Date Night, honoring, of course, the fathers. Along the money-making lines, bake sales were always the favorite proiect. As would be expected, bake sales sponsored by the Future Home- malcers were very successful. The achievements of the group have proved quite beneficial not only to its members but also to numerous people who have come in contact with them. Much of this success is owed to the responsible leadership of Mrs. Renard. FRONT ROW: Cheryl Ohrt, Treas.f Marilyn Andreasen, Pres.: Mary Sidebottom, Parlm., Joan Cornwell, Vice Pres. Future Farmers 0 America The Blair chapter ofthe Future Farmers of America, with its forty-six members seems to be a very popular orgmization at Blair High School. They have made themselves known in numerous ways. Through their annual slave sales which have been extremely successful they are becoming a noted group, not only around school, but also around the whole town. This popularity extends into rural areas since the boys often help themselves out financially by pitching in and working together at the task of picking corn. As far as extra activities, purely for enjoyment, go, the boys have often held unofficial basketball games, and probably one of their most well- known activities is the annual F.F.A. banquet at which they honor some senior farm girl by crowning her as the F.F.A. Sweetheart. The lucky girl for the year 1960-61 was Kathy Kempcke. Concerning skill, these boys usually come out on top as they are becoming renowned iudges. Their skill at iudging livestock, grain, and land accurately has often allowed them to walk off with many ribbons. The Future Farmers meet once a month and rumor has it that these meetings get quite hectic but, nevertheless, they always seem to get every- thing accorrplished that they set out to do. All of this, of course, would not be possible without the able supervision of Mr. Switzner. FRONT ROW: Jim Anderson, Vice pres.g Gordon Lippincott, Mr. Switzner, the sponsor. In ormer Owce again the Journalism class was reorganized and the lnformer staff was corrposed of these members. Along with studying better ways to produce a good newspaper, a few members attended the Nebraska State High School Press Association Convention at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. Thus, once again a very enjoyable school news- paper was produced. ln this paper they record athletic events, doings of B,H.S. clubs, Senior Silhouettes, and humorous everyday events of the students . Other than publishing the school newspaper, the lnformer staff sponsored a school dance for the enjoyment of the students. They also participated in the poster contest held during homecoming. For the first three months of the school year the staff brought us a two page paper bimonthly, but later decided to change back to the traditional four page paper once a month. The staff is still under the excellent supervision of Elizabeth Sack . We all agree that the lnformer staff has once again published a very informative newspaper for our high school of Blair. Under the able direction of Mrs. Caddock and Mr. Pederson, they once again enioyed another successful year. Twice a month they met either at the school or at some special place such as the Bob Hunt home where he spoke on Hi-Fi and stereo- phonic sound. At their meetings in the school, Patrolman Bauer spoke about radar and Doctor Clements from St. Mary's in Omaha talked not only to the. club but to the biology classes as well. On their Field trip to Omaha in the fall they visited such places as Clarkson Hospital, cz radar control station, and Eppley Municipal Airfield where they also enjoyed a lovely meal. ln the spring, several students will be taking their proiects to the Science Academy in Lincoln. Future Nurses o America Although a relatively new organization entering its fifth year, the Future Nurses of America are not to be outdone. Each year its enroll- ment increases as more girls become interested in nursing. Many worthwhile events in which it has participated over the school year included: tours of Memorial Community Hospital in Blair and several other hospitals in Omaha, at Christmas time by helping a needy family with a gift of food and gifts for the family members, and sponsoring an after-the-game dance in the Fall . At their monthly meetings they often have as guest speakers, student or graduate nurses from one of the near-by schools of nursing. Other entertainment oftentimes includes movies, and they are refreshed at the end of the meeting with treats provided by the members. This year freshmen were not allowed to ioin as they thought if they would wait a year they could determine if they were definitely interested in it. Although not all of its members intend to enter nursing directly, they may plan to enter professions related to it. FRONT ROW: Judy Nelson, l?res.p Donna Hale, Vice - Pres. Jeannie Kutch, Lynn Springer, and Kathy Kiger The Purple Peppers At Large Pep lub The Purple Peppers do a tremendous iob of supporting the Blair Bears toward their never-ending victories. Much credit must be given, however, to their able sponsor and leader, Mrs. Renard. Without her many of the club projects would, undoubtedly, have been not nearly as successful as they actually were. The principal purpose of this organization is, as everyone knows, to lend support to the team. This was shown when a mixed group of enthusiastic girls including both upper and lower classmen faithfully appeared many a Friday or Saturday night, combining their efforts for one main reason: to cheer the boys to victory. This enthusiasm was demonstrated even further when the girls showed up at out-of-town games, either by carloads or, occasionally, in buses. Naturally, no organization can operate without a little money and, during the year, the girls held bake sales and candy sales, quite successfully, in order to Fill their treasury. They even sold fruit cakes door-to-door at Christmas time. The Pep Club is, without a doubt, a worthwhile organization and a wonderful demonstration of school spirit. This year the Blair High Letterman 's Club has really turned over a new leaf. ln doing this they have constructed a new constitution and added funds to their treasury, by selling pens, programs at home basketball games, selling refreshments at games, and sponsoring dances. The victories were greeted with enthu-' siastic support, and elevated the status of B.H.S. school spirit. During the season the squad could be found working hard with their new varsity coach, Mike Lehl. Coach Lehl introduced different offenses and de- fenses which helped the team work well together. The sacrifice ofa few hours of time each day and a bit of strenuous work brought about many satisfying rewards such as a swimming party treat by Coach Murrell . Having lost nine seniors last year, the team really bore clown and im- proved rapidly as school approached. The senior boys on the football squad this year were: Gordon Lippincott, Jim Anderson, Bill Biffar, Larry Mackin, Dennis Stave, Mick Jensen, Bob Triplett, David Sappenfield, Vernon Dolleck, Roy Kirk, and Wayne Metzler. The co-captains were Bill Biffar and Mick Jensen. On the list for All- Conference were Bob Triplett, Bill Biffar, Mick Jensen, and Bob Olson. The squad enioyed a successful season due to the fine coaching of coaches Lehl, Rainforth, and Murrell. The Blair Cubs roared away to a winning start in September as they walloped the Tekamah Tigers at Blair. This was only the first of many 1960 contests which found the Cubs the winners. The Missouri Valley Big Reds were also an easy win for Coach Rainforth 's Cubs. The Bellevue Chieftains became the third straight victim of the Bears, and Hooper was the number four win. The Blair Cubs overstepped its bounds when it met the Fremont Tigers at Blair, The score was I4-13. The season finale proved to be an easy victory for the Cubs. The score of this game with Ralston was i9-13. The B team had about thirty members, and the varsity should be streng- thened next year by the fellows who are iuniors and sophomores, and played with the varsity near the end of the T960 season. OJr hopes for a great varsity team next year are riding high in some ofthe B team boys who will play varsity ball in the 1961 season. Coach Rainforth didn't have a tall team, but stated his Bears were certainly able to run and shoot. Returning Iertermen were Bob Triplett, Bob Olson, Brian Petersen, Paul Refsel l, Mick Jensen, and Roger Rogert. The Coach started his boys out with hard practices every night. Using new drills for offensive and defensive plays proved successful in almost every game. Blair High is proud of their Blair Bears who finished the season with thirteen wins and only four losses. Their greatest upset was in the Ak-Sar-Ben Tourney, at Ralston. Papillion High went down against the Blair Bears 84 to 36 in the first round. The Bears climbed the ladder as they defeated Missouri Valley in the semi- finals. For the second time in two years Blair was defeated by the Ralston Tams in the finals. The score was very close but the Bears dropped back in the last quarter ending the game with a final score of 85 to 79. All the hard work and effort paid off for Coach Rainforth and his crew. Their goal was set for the State Tournaments and they almost made it. Blair followed the Bears to Wisner to cheer them through three games. The first night they won the Blair-Tekamah game. Then Blair traveled on to a second victory over the West Point Guardian Angels. In the finals the Blair Bears and the Hooper Cardinals really fought for the trophy. The score was close but in the final quarter the Bears slipped back and were defeated 65 to 55, Although the Bears didn't make State this year, we know they can do it next! Make it shine, Larry! However, the boys were not to be denied more victories, and made a strong comeback, winning 7 out ofthe last 9 games. On several occasions the team did not quite measure up to par. On other occasions, however, the team played well and proved that they could make a good showing. When displaying their best, the team usually came Forth with outstanding teamwork. ln lookinglover the past season, we can say that it was a worth- while one. T e boys learned to play together, acquired many of the fundamentals ofthe game, and also gained the experience that always helps to make a better basketball team. Inasmuch as the B team was all iuniors, sophomores, and freshmen, they will be returning to Blair High next year as promising prospects for a good team. Two of our hard working student managers, Larry Drbal and Bob Nelson, are making sure that the balls are ready forthe next game. The T960-61 school year had a bang-up start with many new activi- ties added to the old stand-bys. The chemistry and physics classes were eagerly awaiting their new laboratory which would mean doing all the experiments that really seem to liven up the class. There was no exception For the Freshmen this year, they still had to go through with initiation. initiation was set up in a bit different way this year though. The Seniors, with the help of their always-thinking sponsor, Mr. Murrell, seemed to bring in a money making proiect with it. Instead of picking a certain day for the event a whole week was picked and the Freshmen were required to purchase a purple and white B.H.S. beanie from any Senior. They were to wear these all week at all times until the Initiation Dance, at which they had the entertainment, and then at a given time were allowed to finally remove their beanies. Something else new was also added to B.H.S. this year, and that was the Bear Wagon. l'm sure this little purple beast spurred the boys on to many a victory and made our losses seem not halt so bad! Getting in the Groove Judging by the healthy tans and happy Faces of Blair High students, summer vacation was without a doubt, a very enjoyable time For everyone. But in spite of this, the first day of school somehow found most of us ready and waiting lperhaps even eager? lj to get back into the familiar old routine and start in on our new subjects. Although the first days seemed rather hectic, we began to realize soon that not much had really changed since last year -- except for freshmen, of course. it was the same old building with its locker-lined halls and many of the same teachers. There were many old faces and also many new. The latter were composed of Freshmen, students from Kennard, and several new teachers. Although last year's seniors were missing, the school did not seem by any means enpty. The same old rooms were still there, but there had been a little rearranging of the classes to be held in them as we soon discovered. Eventually how- ever, everyone adjusted himself once again to the up-in- the-rnorning routine and to his new schedule. The ever- lasting eighth periods were still given also as many Found out. By mid-October everyone was well back in the groove. Clubs were Forming and games were starting. The pictures on these pages are candid shots of the typical happenings that took place at B.H .
