V. Mafxer, A.B. Iowa Stale U niverrity LIVING WELL A MESSAGE TO THE BLAIR HIGH STUDENT BODY It is not how long you have lived, but how well you have lived that counts in the battle of life. The school is a laboratory for the preparation of life to live well. Quite often the students of Blair High fail to realize what wonderful opportunities are at hand. We have one of the most beautiful school homes in the state. It is not merely a public building, but it is your fine home at least six hours a day and five days a week. The rooms are equipped with furniture, laboratory equipment etc., the best that money can buy. The best and most re- cent text-books are placed in your hands, a gift from the tax-payers of the district. You have the most favorable environment and the best tools with which you may make your life richer and fuller. In order to possess the better things in life, mere book knowledge is not enough. We must develop poise, keen judgment, discrimination. social quali- ties, and the ability to speak well. We must gain the confidence of our friends. We must have good habits and a good personality. All of these are factors in the process of living well. D. V. MASSER, City Superizzzezzfient Piglt The most powerful dynamic in our educational progress of today is the sense of national and state civic pride and the firm belief that educa- tion is the best investment that a nation can make for l1er moral greatness and the welfare of her people. Blair exemplifies this ideal in her Senior High School by educating her students for service and citizenship. They may then, as men and women, take their part in the world of affairs, bravely and wisely, and can help to build a society fit to possess and enjoy the blessings of freedom and self-government. F. E. Flack. F. E, FLACK, B.S. 'Farkio Follege l'niu-rsity of Nebraska High School I'rincipal The junior high school is one of tl1e most recent developments of the American School System, having arisen out of the need for an institution to bridge the gap between the tradi- tional grammar school and the high school and to provide a program decidedly greater in scope and content. It is not merely a school in which the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades are segregated: it is designed to include: a departmental organiza- tion of subject matter and teaching, the organi- zation of student activities in accordance with the need-s and interests of adolescent boys and girls, Hlld a development of the individual rather than the group. It was the first journey of this kind attempted since the Arctic expedition of the Nautilus in 1931. The Commandant of the craft was called Capp'l Cisj. Capp was considered the outstanding adventurous explorer of the country at that time, having sailed the -seven seas in air craft and sea craft. In planning this expedition, he arranged to take only sixty-five passengers. Thousands and thousands of letters were received by his private secretary, Elsie Stevens, from applicants desirous of taking the trip. Capp rejected all but those from the most famous of applicants. VVhen the submarine set out on that bright spring day it carried a crew of notorious, famous, ingenious and remarkable people selected by the brave Capp. Friends and relatives sniffed and waved handkerchiefs from the dock, and the Bel Aire No. I was off. Days passed, weeks, months and several years passed but nothing was heard from the Bel Aire. One stormy day in March. three years later, the good ship O Fice commanded by Lieutenant Floyd Everett Flack spied the periscope of a submarine on high seas. At the same moment a radio mes- sage was received from the submarine Bel Aire No. I, asking if the pas- sengers might come on board the ship. Lieutenant Flack, recognizing it as the craft that had set out three years ago, and realizing how anxious the people would be to see persons of a civilized race, consented. The chief steward, a little middle-aged black Irishman by the name of O'Kelly was summoned and as he appeared everyone on board laughed at his queerness. It seems that Lieutenant Flack and O'Kelly started a close friendship back in 1931 in Blair High School. O'Kelly was asked to announce each of the remarkable personages as they came on board from the Bel Aire No. I. The passengers stepped forth one by one and O'Kelly announced: Coach M. W. Stricklette of Notre Dame. O'Kelly SIHYCS a moment, slaps him on the back and yells, Sticky . He was captain of the Blair High School 1950 football team and is considered the modern Knute Rockne. Sticky informs the Lieutenant and steward that they will recognize many more of the pas- sengers. Coach I. P. Gillispie and Assistant Coach Abraham L. Warrick of the University of Nebraska. Abe and Iohn are heartily greeted. Ruth E. Tilden, M. D., and Florence Wolff. Ruthie is famed for her service to the world in medicine. Florence is her head assistant and has given her life to the advancement of the science of nursels training. O'Kelly beams as he announces his old pal, Karl Adolf Peterson, President of the United States. T C 0 The next in line are Verner and Viggo Carlsen, modern chemists, the only men who have equalled Albert Einstein who lived in the early part of the century. They have succeeded in finding the fourth dimension and also have discovered a metal more valuable than gold. Mrs, Glenn Voss, nee Dorothy Stewart, and Rev. Glenn Voss are mis- sionaries in the newly discovered island of Beeache Es. Madame Freedricca Matteauzn is a famed opera star. A. Brooks Bealz appears as her manager and also furnishes hokem obligatos. The editor of the New York Times, Marvin Gollehon, next comes on deck with his crew of reporters including Raymond Paulsen, Raymond Ruwe, Raymond Matz, and Raymond Fackler. ' Countess Maxine Enkins appears elegantly dressed. She married the Count de Edej Enkins shortly after he received his title. Ruby Badgerow is known as the founder of the largest Orphans' Home in existence. The home is situated in Mexico City and Mary Bolln is financial manager. O'Kelly and Lieut. Flack are consumed with admiration of these old friends of theirs. But O'Kelly's job is not over. Honorable Alice Beekmann, L.L.D., the greatest prosecuting attorney in the world since the days of Portia. Her private secretary, Elva Hansen, appears next. Madame Olga Schulz is a noted German artist. She has produced the mural hangings for the new German Kaiser's state house. Rozella Phillips takes care of her business transactions. The Master Farmers of the world are next in line, Allen McDonald, G. B. Linden, Walter Koenig and Fred Kegler. The Master Home-Makers are: Dorothy Mencke, Clara Krogh, and Lois Tofte. Harriett Allen and Frances Siert are managing the largest system of hotels and tea-rooms in the world. Bert McMillan is their business manager. Next appear the famed movie stars. Vera Nelson has taken Helen Kane's place. Doris Beck has replaced Marie Dresshler, and Mac Allen is a second Rudolph Valentino. A group of adventurous school teachers from Columbia University include Dorothy Voss, Selma Rosenbaum, Grace McCormick, Norma Lund, and Marjorie Iansen. These women have given themselves up to the creation of the 'perfect American youth'. The American Ambassador to Iapan, Norman Wulf, appears with his secretary, Helen Andreason. With him is the Consul to Budapest, Harry Husk, and his secretary, Harriet Christensen. Rowena Alsyne Smith, a notorious photographer has been paid 375,000 to film the trip for the manager of the Paramount Pictures, Leslie Hansen. Frieda Grothusen and Hazel Christensen have given up their lives for the sake of being with each other. They have been sought in marriage by nobility from every corner of the earth, but they care more for each other. Twenty-Two Rudy Valee has been out of the picture since 1940, and his place is filled by a new vagabound lover, Clarence Sappenfield. Sappenfield now comes on board. Frances O'Hanlon is perhaps the most interesting character on board. Be- cause of her extensive reading, she has created an Inter-National Story Hour Association. She and her aides, Luella Simpson and Iris Rodel, travel from country to country drawing crowds of little children to hear their wonderful tales. Lucille Feer and Delores Derieg are well-known advancers of Mountain Education. They have taught in the Ozarks for twenty years. Stanley Iensen is the National Executive of Boys' Clubs in America. Be- fore acquiring this position, he played on Nebraska's football team making All-American. Myrle French plays the ,cello in the Roxy Symphony Orchestra and Helen Walrath plays 'fiddle' in the same group. Dottee Gylbertson is Zeigfield II's pride and joy. The follies are now not only presented in Broadway, but also in the Arctic Regions. Senator Frances Harrison has served in the Senate for a period of eighteen years and is on the Democratic ticket for Vice-President in the election of IQ56. Iean Stewart is her private secretary. Madam Dorothy Tyson is considered the greatest teacher of aesthetic dancing in the world. She has her school located in Nova Scotia. Lo and behold! who is it that has entered from the Bel Aire No. I? All of these famous personages are none other than those who made up the class who were graduated from Blair High in 1931. But who are these two elegant ladies who appear on the deck so aristocratically gowned? They are the hostesses on the O Fice and are recognized as Florence Dixon and Myrtle Gilbertson. Chef Willie Wilson now serves dinner to the class. Lieut. Flack is overjoyed at meeting all this class but he is quite concerned over the fact that the Bel Aire No. I has been gone so long. The reason is quite plain, says President Peterson, Capp fell in love with a beautiful young Eskimese maiden and we were obliged to await his pleasure to return. In fact, it just wouldn't be school without Iuniors. The Iunior Class, always peppy and ambitious, has been well represented in all school activities this year and has done its share in bringing more honors to Blair Higlfs ample store. When calls were made for volunteers in the different activities of school life, the Iunior Class responded eagerly and was able to boast of representatives in every one of the various activities. The Iunior boys proved mainstays in all forms of athletics. Many members of the class took active parts in various musical organizations including band, orchestra, glee club, and the operetta in which several took leads. Irene De Vinney, Reed O'Hanlon and Roy Christensen showed real ability on the debate team. Several Iuniors were outstanding in declamatory Work. Margaret Maher and Gladys Hanson took honors in the Home Declamatory Contest by winning second and third places respectively. In a Home Commercial contest, Elizabeth Grimm, Helen McMillan and Miriam Iensen were chosen to participate in the District Commercial Contest. On Ianuary 29, the Iunior Class presented the class play Skidding', which proved a wonderful success and a high spot in the history of the class of 1932. It also provided food for the Seniors at a certain social function in the spring. The climax of a successful year was the Iunior-Senior banquet Which was held at the close of the school year. With this, our Iunior year closes. It has been a pleasant, busy one. We feel we have done our best, Working in co-operation with each other and, we hope, bringing honor to our school. The reorganization of Iunior High has given much better oppor- tunity for extra curricular work. The Iuior High operetta, Love Pirates of Hawaii, was given in Novem- ber. This won high praise from those who saw it. Mary Louise Moran, Cath- erine Ienkins, Don Bellows and Wayne Dudgeon had the leading parts. There were thirty in each of the boys' and girls' choruses. Under the direction of Mr. Masser, a Iunior High basketball team was trained. This team took part in the district tournament at Decatur and won second place. Those who did actual playing were Harold Hansen, Herbert Kolterman, Ray Hansen, Wayne Dudgeon, Billie Harrison, Patrick Quinlan, Arthur Stevens, Donald Nemetz, Leroy Bucklin, Iack Maher, and Earl Wal- rath. Several convocations have been enjoyed during the year. One of these was arranged from Iunior High talentg the others were hired entertainers. Mr. White trained several contestants for the County Spelling Contest. Mary Louise Moran won first in oral and entered the state contest. A Dramatic Club was organized under the direction of Miss King. The members presented a Christmas program. Mary Louise Moran was elected president. A Folk Dancing Club was organized and directed by Miss McGill. Several dances were studied and learned. The club was handicapped by not being able to secure a suitable room for work. Toward the end of the year Mr. DeGroff began training a Iunior High Boys' Glee Club. Georgia Antill, Elly Marie Larsen, Iulius Peterson, Leora Wrick, and Mary Louise Moran took part in the declamatory contest. None of these placed but were given much encouragement by the judge. This smiling coach has brought new enthusiasm and vigor in- to Blair High School athletics. He has won the friendship of his teams through fairness, ability and personality. This was his first year here and the student body is happy that he will be back again to guide the destinies of Blair High athletics next year. The Senior athletes regret leaving him and whole-heartedly wish suc- cess to his coming teams. JOE JOHNSTON Tackle Joe was one of the most consistent men on the team. If any great critic of the game had seen the development of Blair's team from their first day out until the great event on Turkey Day, he would have pronounced it a glorious team. On September 27, we played our first game with Benson there, and it was due entirely to inexpericnce and not the lack of fight on the part of the Blair aggregation that Benson emerged victorious to the tune of 33-o. In the next game on October 3, as usual, the Blair boys were outweighed considerably. Nevertheless the team was scrapping and as a result were the first ones to score. But soon weight and experience began to tell and the Blair team weakened. As a result Decatur won by a score of 26 to 6. On October Io, Lyons came down with the impression that the name of Blair in athletics was not to be respected any more but soon after the opening whistle blew they began to change their minds. They were completely baffled by Blair's passing attack but we lacked the scoring punch and the game ended with the score 20-7. October I7 came and with it Homecoming. The game looked doubtful and when the two teams came on the field, the Wahoo boys looking like giants, it was a dark moment but despite all the handicaps, the Wahoo boys could not stop those bullet passes that were here, there and everywhere and they are still trying to figure out how Blair made 25 points against their o. The Oakland game on Ocober 24 was one of the best played and hardest fought games ever witnessed. Oakland could not figure out Blair's impregna- ble passing attack and as a result Oakland lost their first football game to a bunch of midgets with a score of 6-o. November 7, Bancroft came down to visit us. It was in this game that the passing attack worked to perfection and as a result we completed 21 out of 26 attempted passes and Bancroft went home with the short end of a I3-0 score. On November 15, the team journeyed to Omaha to play the Central Re- serves. Central was ahead six points at the end of the first half. But at the be- ginning of the second, Stricklett ran 60 yards for a touchdown and the game ended in a tie. On the day of days, Thanksgiving, the team met Tekamah on the Tekamah field. Everyone sensed a victory for Tekamah but the Blair boys outplayed them two to one. However, breaks count and as the final whistle blew Blair was on Tekamah's half yard line with one down yet to go. The score was I3-6 in Tekamah's favor. Approximately forty candidates answered the first call for track practice. A- mong these were thirty fellows who had had no previous track experience. One thing that might help to build a team would be the fact that a new field was graded for the team to practice upon, new equipment was purchased and a good line up of spectacular meets were scheduled, namely: a dual meet with Arlington at Blair April 17, a tri-valley meet at Tekamah April 22, invitation High School meet at Nebraska Wesleyan University April 24, Midland Col- lege invitation meet May 2, N. E. C. A. A. Conference at Oakland May 8, and the Nebraska State High School meet at Lincoln May I5 and 16. Track is a sport which has not received much attention in Blair High School in the past and it is now being pushed into the lime-light as a major sport, being put on a par with football and basketball. It is the sincere wish of the Athletic Director and the Tattler staff that in each successive year Blair High boosters will pull for a better, stronger, and more competitive track team. Although there were only two experienced debaters back, Blair made a good showing by com- ing through with only eight defeats out of twenty-one debates. When Mr. Masser made a call for debaters, early in November, only a small group of people appeared. Few people realize what enjoyable and profitable train- ing is afforded by experience in debating. Those who represented Blair High in debate were Alice Beekmann, Captain, Reed O'Hanlon, Fredricka Matthiesen, Roy Christensen, Doris Beck, Irene DeVinney, and Edward Ienkins. These people have gained valuable experience in thinking, logic and self-expression. The climax of the season was the district debate tournament at Fremont. Blair won every debate up to the finals, where after a very close debate the de- cision was given to Plattsmouth. This made Blair High runners-up in the tournament. Alice Beekmann was judged the outstanding speaker at the tour- nament. Thus we close another successful debate season. Six or sev- en Iunior High pupils also entered the lists. All worked diligently with the result that the Home Contest held on March I9 and 20 was an interesting and worthwhile event characterized by close com- petition. In the Oratorical class, Verner Carlsen placed first, Roy Christensen second, in Dramatics, Esther Carlsen first, Harriet Allen second, and in Hum- orous, Dorine Glasgowe first, Margaret Maher second. While the Iunior High aspirants did not win any honors, they deserve special mention for their com- mendable work. Blair thus won first place in the contest. The Pre-district Contest was held at Blair on March 27. Our representatives, those who won first in the Horne Contest, succeeded in capturing first honors for Blair. Alice Beekmann placed second in the Extemporaneous division, Verner Carlsen first in Oratorical, Dorine Glasgowe second in Humorous, and Esther Carlsen, third in Dramatic. Blair was thus entitled to enter Verner Carlsen, Alice Beekmann, and Dorine Glasgowe in the District contest at Plattsmouth on April Io. Once more all did Well. Nominations were made by the old members and a generously filled ballot was submitted to the student body. The new members were initiated and everyone set to work. The first achievement of the group was to form a constitution that de- finitely stated the purpose and ideals of the club. This duty had been neg- lected heretofore. Upon the arrival of the football season the members were caught in an end- less whirl of ticket selling and rallies. Home Coming, Thanksgiving,--it all was brought to a climax by the Football Banquet given for the football men. The basketball season was upon them before the thought of football had been quite dismissed. The season was a busy one for the club. Charlotte Armstead, aided by a few members of the student body, led the basketball enthusiasts in their cheers. Other members of the club displayed their wares for the hungry horde. This year is the seventh year of existence for the rg Club of Blair High School and it is the hope of the present members that its existence may prove a real aid in creating fun and enthusiasm for the student body. It would have been in the height of its glory these sunny days and moonlight nights. Don't get excited as I'm describ- ing Pansy , not our dear old Ford's experiences. April 17. While reading to the class of the duel between Shakespeare and Iulius Caesar, Mr. Marren became highly excited, grabbed up a yard stick and went through several impossible actions. Due to his own quick thinking and action, Bill Sylvis, who sits, or did sit, in the front row, dodged a quick parry and thrust, thereby saving himself from a severe gashing. April 21. Miss Willmore was severely frightened the other day while working at a sewing machine. She glanced up and saw the head of some wild looking African hunter, waving to and fro in front of her window. The school's most popular sleuth, Mr. Marren, with the aid of the science of deduction, came to the conclusion that Bus O'Hanlon was the artist. April 27. All the boys are making quite a stir over something and it has blonde hair and its name is Virginia Andreason. Fifty-Se n J. E. The school has at least one nationally noted personage. Charles Woods broke all endurance records in staying in the air I3 seconds on his 3- foot model glider but was forced to come down on account of a dog fight. 13. An unlucky day. As Roy C. stooped and laffed he felt quite a draft. He knew he had tore'm so he came to school in the afternoon with a new pair of pants. 18. Events are happening fast. In fact, so fast that I can't write them all but it's just the ordinary things that take place at the last of the year. CI'm getting a funny feeling, some of the other Seniors complained too, I wonder what could be the matter? P P P Pj 22. It's all over. We received our report cards today. To think that we worked twelve years for that piece of cardboard. Anyway, I've noticed some Seniors walking around the halls looking at different things, prob- ably places where they had been hit with a paper Wad or had water spilt on them or where they had written their name, etc. I hope youlve enjoyed reading this as much as I have enjoyed writing it.
