SOPH-FROSH WINS LEAGUE With first year coach, Mike Graber, there was little doubt that the Soph-Frosh team would turn out to be so victorious. The team composed of all Freshman, had inexperience as their greatest weakness. Despite their inexperience, they had the potential to take their team to the ulti- mate. The pre-league record was 6-5, with great expectations for league. Out of the 5 losses, 2, against well matched oppo- nents P.H.S. and Glenn, came from last second scoring. As the league play ended, the young Soph-Frosh were undefeated and became the city and league champi- ons. Outstanding players on the l984 Soph- Frosh team were, Darren Gipson, who led in points and assists, Dion Smith. who led in rebounds, Larry Brown and Turran Wil- liams, who also displayed excellent skill. Guided by Coach Tim Guy and Assis- tant Amos Stevens, the Vikings managed to play a strong aggressive, man-to-man defense, and a high scoring disciplined offense. The Vikings were considered un- derdogs, but with good strategy and out- standing individual performances. the Vi- kings overcame some local teams, show- ing the championship quality that they are known for. The outstanding J.V. players of l984, who demonstrated skill and talent, were Arthur Barron, Darrell Canty, and Steven Lockhart. The best defensive player was Randy Rogers, and the most improved player was Marcus,Abrams. This season has been one full of experience for the young team members hoping to play Var- sity next year. Q57 Steven Lockhart shows his version of an excellent free throw. IO4 Basketball Top Row: Fred Jenkins, Dion Smith, Muljadi Surya, Thomas Augustine. BottomRow,Coach Graber, Zach Mark Underwood. A O THER WINNING SEASON Due to the fact that Blair won the Rio Hondo League Championship last year and were returning nine of their starters, they were expected to do very well. Blair started off on the right track by defeating seven of their first nine oppo- nents. After key victories over Muir and Glendale, the team went on to take third place in the Eisenhower Soccer Classic. The Vikings were then ready to enter the tough Rio Hondo League. Blair was one of four Rio Hondo teams to be ranked in the top ten of CIF competition. These rankings proved competitive as Blair lost their league opener to another ranked team - La Canada. The Team then pushed number eight ranked South Pasa- dena to a I-I draw. The Vikings got back on track by defeating San Marino and the sixth ranked Monrovia Wildcats. The first round ended with a 2-2 tie with Temple City. Blair opened the second round with losses to La Canada and South Pasadena and a tie with San Marino. Blair then de- feated first place Monrovia and Temple City to keep their CIF hopes alive. The team was led on offense by Paul Bodenshot, Eddie Perez, and Matt Inman. On defense were all league candidates Roger Krieg, Joe Bogaard, Sam Puffin- burger and goalie Jeff Koch. Coach Gaffney hopes to have a strong team next year with some promising re- turning players and a strong J.V. team. - 1 .sfgal-ily' . E - Q, A .- V ' ,' K QL. . ' I KN' 'i?,,V If , ,515-if . -.
