Soph Frosh Football Hit Hardest B lneligibilit looked as though they contenders for league Football Teams would both be championships. The teams were then new eligibility rules. Due troubled by the to this rule, the Freshmen team lost ten of their twenty-five players and the Sopho- mores lost thirty of their forty players. The remaining ten Sophomores were moved up to Varsity, who lost only five players. Prior to the loss of players both teams had good seasons. The Sophomores, under the direction of James Cousins and Ange- lo Cesari, began the year with impressive victories over Salesian and Bonita. They then played a tough Hoover squad which they tied I2-l2. The Vikings then went up against cross-town rival Muir. The Vikings held their ground until the last few min- utes when Muir scored the winning touch- down to win I2-6. They ended their pre- season with a 2l-6 FOUL over Redondo Union. In their only league game the Vi- kings defeated LaCanada l4-6. The Freshmen Team, under the direc- tion of coaches David Mitchell and Alvin Harris, began their year with a tough loss to Dana and an impressive victory over Bonita. The Vikings lost to Foothill of La Canada, but came back to defeat Pasade- na High School in an exciting victory. Their last preseason battle was against Re- dondo Union. The Vikings led 6-O for most of the game. The Seahawks then came on strong to score two quick touchdowns and defeat Blair I2-6. The freshmen also played only one league game. The team lost to the Rio Hondo League Champs La Canada 28-O. The coaches looked at this year as a valuable learning experience. They know that next year the players will be hitting the books instead of being hit by ineligibil- ity. The coaches are also hoping for a full season and perhaps a championship sea- son. 98 Football EEE - -' rv, . s mu 11 Sophomore Football: lst row: W. Brown, S. Morgan, K. Williams, D. Higgins, D. BALLPLA YERS ARE REAL SWINGERS THIS YEAR. Blair Baseball was in high spirits this year. Under new coach Steve Somerlot, the Varsity baseball team joined together in their quest for a league championship. The team has grown and learned together over the past few years under the com- mand and guidance of coach Joe Ballard. When Coach Ballard moved on to take the reigns of the varsity basketball team, the squad was left in limbo until they acquired a new coach. These baseball Bowery Boys set their sights on a Rio Hondo League Championship. Coach Somerlot brought his philosophies and tactics to this organization and brought a league championship one step closer. Noteworthy performances are expect- ed from Rick Nowak, pitcherl Charlie Nootbaar, whose hitting skill is an asset, Greg Vaughns, a strong hitting, left-hand- ed, first basemana Jose Carlos, anchor of the varsity infieldt and Danny Hornbuckle. ln their first game against Muir they were down 4-2 in the bottom of the sev- enth with two outs, two strikes and bases loaded when Danny Hornbuckle roped a game-winning grand slam! Joe Lewis once said, A champion is one who gets up, even when he can't. This year's J.V. Baseball is a very young team with only three juniors on the roster. They faced an extremely tough Rio Hondo League. Coach Omer Plante says, We are working hard and l am pleased with the way things are going. l am expecting a big season from Scott Wallerstedt and Ron Maxie, This will be a building year.
