Poloist Excel With New Personnel The I983 Varsity Water Polo Team was plagued with not only the loss of last year's coach, but the loss of four out of last year's seven starters. Nonetheless, the team, under the direction of coach Brian Biery, fought its way to an awesome 5-2 league record. The season began rather slow as the Vikings lost two of three games in the Montebello Tournament. They then went to face four tough 4A schools. Defeat- ing a rough Arcadia team, but losing to P.H.S., Loyola, and high ranked Muir. They then entered the La Puente tour- nament. After Iosing the first game they showed their pride by coming back to win the next three. Thus, they were crowned consolation champions. The Vikings began league on the right foot, with victories over Monrovia and Burbank. They then faced South Pasadena for one of the closest matches of the sea- son. The game was tied until the final min- utes, when South Pasadena opened up with two quick goals. The Tigers went on to a I8-I5 win. The Vikings quickly put this loss behind them and defeated La Canada and Burroughs. The only other league loss was to the undefeated league champs, San Marino. With their impressive league re- cord the team assured itself a CIF play-off birth. This year the J.V. team and Frosh-Soph team were also under the direction of Bri- an Biery. The Frosh-Soph team was put together at the last minute to face those schools who also had a Frosh-Soph team. The J.V. team showed talent and flexibil- ity.
