RUNNING TO VICTOR Y The key to the l984 track team was the one-hundred percent commitment of ev- ery team member to strive for excellence to be number one. The track team. who was led by Coach Don Molloy and assisted by Coach Ben Steelhead Sr., enforced hard work outs, which seemed to pay off. The physical preparation for competition came alive when the track team ran against their well matched opponents from the Rio Hondo League. As for strong points, Sam Morgan led in sprints, Harry Johnson led in hurdles, Suresh Krishnan led in distance. An impressive relay team was composed of Darryl Austin, Darryl Harvey, Sam Morgan, and Chris Martin. As the season began, there was much optimism for a successful team. Victory came against cross-town rivalry, P.H.S. and those hopes were secured. The team members displayed talent and potential during the season. As the first invitational track meet came, the overall points gave Blair a remarkable victory over the ten schools that competed. With the individ- ual performance of every team member, the i984 track team was one of the better teams that Blair has produced. As the sea- son ended, Blair had taken another league championship. The Soph-Frosh team displayed as much enthusiasm as the Varsity team, and pos- sesed potential and talent as well. The most promising members on the Soph- Frosh team were Anthony Beaty, Doug Galindo, and Pat Bodenshot. .. . ..,,, . .. ,f- ...., -fi. , .:, -g-. j- , First row: Mark Crear, Micheal Jones, Sam Morgan. Swimmers Led By Seniors This year's varsity swim team followed the footsteps of swim teams past. Once again our team was led mainly by seniors. Outstanding performances were turned in by Brad Pickering in the breaststroke and freestyle. Kevin Turk in the back- stroke and freestyle, Victor Gallardo in the backstroke and butterfly, Ain Cocke in the freestyle, and Craig Piper in the freestyle and backstroke. The team also had some very strong underclassmen. Keith Sherry turned in excellent times in the backstroke, while Julio Gallud excelled in the distance freestyles and the butter- fly, and Robbie Hendrix did well in the freestyle, butterfly, and the breaststroke. With all of their great individual efforts the team still had troubles. Swim meets are won by a compiling of team points. The Vikings won many races but due to the lack of members, lanes were not filled, thus causing Blair to lose the meets. The Junior Varisty team had the same problems that our varsity had. While great preformances were turned in by Jon Bo- denshot. Wes Lake, Sean Boyd, Chris Moore. and Eric Oberholtzer, the team lost meets because of their lack of com- petitors. Coach Pat McCummins saw a lot of tal- ent in this year's junior varsity. She is hop- ing that these swimmers will again come out next year. She knows that if she can recruit more swimmers for next year we will have a very strong team, a team that will achieve many team victories as well as individual victories.
