Varsity Hurt By Graduation There is no doubt that last year's varsi- ty basketball team had an outstanding season. There is also no doubt that this year's team suffered because of this. First year coach Joe Ballard did an admirable iob. The team not only lost all five starters. but they only had one returnee. The team had many difficulties at the beginning of the season. The Viking's only returnee Vaughn Rex was knocked out for the season by knee injuries. The new play- ers had to take over and become a unit. The preseason schedule placed the rookie Viking squad up against a cast of veteran teams. The team then entered the highly com- petitive Rio Hondo League. After dropping the first three games the Vikings defeat- ed the second place South Pasadena Ti- gers, 54-47. Blair then dropped another three. only again to come back, this time beating La Canada, 74-72. ln their final game the Vikings put it all together to defeat the league runner-ups San Marino, 63-59 in overtime. Coach Ballard knew that it was only a matter of time before his team was to reach their peak. Unfortunately it hap- pened at the end of their season. Ballard also knows that he will have a strong team next year with the many returnees and the tough summer workouts. The team was led by many different players throughout the course of the sea- son. Charles Pierce and Tony Russell did outstanding iobs as centers. while Ted Jones, Ken Cambell. and Steve Robinson led the forwards. The team also had two outstanding guards with Scott Bass and Robert Shaw. lO2 Basketball . I - l l Qi -...- .T Zfpf' , ff L Top raw: Coach Ballard, Steve Charles Bottom Row: Elmer Gallnd0. SOPH-FROSH WINS LEAGUE With first year coach, Mike Graber, there was little doubt that the Soph-Frosh team would turn out to be so victorious. The team composed of all Freshman. had inexperience as their greatest weakness. Despite their inexperience, they had the potential to take their team to the ulti- mate. The pre-league record was 6-5, with great expectations for league. Out of the 5 losses, 2, against well matched oppo- nents P.H.S. and Glenn, came from last second scoring. As the league play ended, the young Soph-Frosh were undefeated and became the city and league champi- ons. Outstanding players on the l984 Soph- Frosh team were, Darren Gipson, who led in points and assists, Dion Smith, who led in rebounds, Larry Brown and Turran Wil- liams, who also displayed excellent skill. Guided by Coach Tim Guy and Assis- tant Amos Stevens, the Vikings managed to play a strong aggressive, man-to-man defense. and a high scoring disciplined offense. The Vikings were considered un- derdogs, but with good strategy and out- standing individual performances, the Vi- kings overcame some local teams, show- ing the championship quality that they are known for. The outstanding J.V. players of l984, who demonstrated skill and talent, were Arthur Barron. Darrell Canty, and Steven Lockhart. The best defensive player was Randy Rogers, and the most improved player was Marcus Abrams. This season has been one full of experience for the young team members hoping to play Var- sity next year. i l Top Raw: Fred Jenkins. Dion Smith. Muliadi Surya, Thomas Augustine.
