BALLPLA YERS ARE REAL SWINGERS THIS YEAR. Blair Baseball was in high spirits this year. Under new coach Steve Somerlot. the Varsity baseball team joined together in their quest for a league championship. The team has grown and learned together over the past few years under the com- mand and guidance of coach Joe Ballard. When Coach Ballard moved on to take the reigns of the varsity basketball team, the squad was left in limbo until they acquired a new coach. These baseball Bowery Boys set their sights on a Rio Hondo League Championship. Coach Somerlot brought his philosophies and tactics to this organization and brought a league championship one step closer. Noteworthy performances are expect- ed from Rick Nowak, pitchers Charlie Nootbaar, whose hitting skill is an asset, Greg Vaughns, a strong hitting, left-hand- ed, first basemam Jose Carlos, anchor of the varsity infield: and Danny Hornbuckle. ln their first game against Muir they were down 4-2 in the bottom of the sev- enth with two outs, two strikes and bases loaded when Danny Hornbuckle roped a game-winning grand slam! Joe Lewis once said, A champion is one who gets up. even when he can't. This year's J.V. Baseball is a very young team with only three juniors on the roster. They faced an extremely tough Rio Hondo League. Coach Omer Plante says, We are working hard and l am pleased with the way things are going. lam expecting a big season from Scott Wallerstedt and Ron Maxie. Varsity Hurt By Graduation There is no doubt that last year's varsi- ty basketball team had an outstanding season. There is also no doubt that this year's team suffered because of this. First year coach Joe Ballard did an admirable iob. The team not only lost all five starters. but they only had one returnee. The team had many difficulties at the beginning of the season. The Viking's only returnee Vaughn Rex was knocked out for the season by knee injuries. The new play- ers had to take over and become a unit. The preseason schedule placed the rookie Viking squad up against a cast of veteran teams. The team then entered the highly com- petitive Rio Hondo League. After dropping the first three games the Vikings defeat- ed the second place South Pasadena Ti- gers, 54-47. Blair then dropped another three. only again to come back, this time beating La Canada, 74-72. ln their final game the Vikings put it all together to defeat the league runner-ups San Marino, 63-59 in overtime. Coach Ballard knew that it was only a matter of time before his team was to reach their peak. Unfortunately it hap- pened at the end of their season. Ballard also knows that he will have a strong team next year with the many returnees and the tough summer workouts. The team was led by many different players throughout the course of the sea- son. Charles Pierce and Tony Russell did outstanding iobs as centers. while Ted Jones, Ken Cambell. and Steve Robinson led the forwards. The team also had two outstanding guards with Scott Bass and Robert Shaw. lO2 Basketball . I - l l Qi -...- .T Zfpf' , ff L Top raw: Coach Ballard, Steve Charles Bottom Row: Elmer Gallnd0.
