DEBATE The old adage says that lt's the women who usually get in the last word. True or not, the adage has been taken to heart by our four, first team, 'girl debaters' who debated th81P way into the State Central Sectional Finals. The debate topic for this year: 'Resolved that the United Nations now be revised into a Federal World Govern- ment' proved very interesting and timely. Debating on the affirmative side of the issue, were: Mary Ann Brovold and Joan Frederlxong representing the negative side of the prop- osition were: Beatrice Anderson and Eva Hellekson. On January Sth. our debate squad placed second in the Annual Invitational Tournament held at Eau Claire State Teacher's College, ln which some forty schools participated. They won five of their six debates. Pour days later, January 12th, the squad swept the Sparta Tournament, winning all four of their matches. Then, on January 22nd. the quartet entered the District Tournament held at La Crosse Teachers College, where they tied for flrst place which rendered them eligible to enter the Sectional tournament at Stevens Point. The Squad was defeated at Stevens Point ln their bid for the right to en- ter UDB State Contest. In addition to the declsion tournaments the entire debate group of Blair High School entered practice meets with Eau Claire Senior High School and acted as host tc a tournament here at Blair. We have every reason to express our thanks and gratitude to the 'l94S-'49' debate team for their excellent record. They have done a wonderful Job and came through with flying colors SPEECH Speech activities were greatly expanded this yearg both from the standpoint of participation, as well as activities. A class in speech training was added to our curriculm, which did much toward furthering speech activity throughout the year. An assembly program, demonstrating the proper pro- cedure of conducting a business meeting, plus a humorous skit was presented to the students by the class. Thirty-five students participated in Spring Speech work, which is almost one-fourth of our school enrollment. Th1B, in itself, speaks well of the interest and activity in our speech department. The students entered all phases of fo- rensic work: oratory, original oratory, humorous and seri- ous declamatlons, extemporaneous reading and speaking, and four-minute speaking. It ls not possible to include the re- sults of winners in our forensic work, because cf the early printing date of this book: however, we are confident that tae contestants will represent our school in excellent S ape. 49
