The American Field Service of James Blair is the local chapter of the International AFS. The club's purpose is to promote international understanding among students by raising funds to send an American student abroad or invite a foreign student to attend Blair. Among projects are the T. The goal of which is to assist girls interested in enter- ing the medical profession. Mahone. The Debate Team of James Blair participates in tourna- ments at various schools throughout the state wherein the team discusses current and controversial issues of the world. Experiences and train- ing in public' speaking and knowledge and understanding of national problems are among the benefits to students who are members of the team. 83

The land of the Alps, extensive lakes. and practical peo- ple provided me with the most fulfilling experience I ever encountered. The greatest thrill of this experi- ence came from the deep feeling of being a part of the Swiss culture . . . When I left I was an American but when I returned I was an Australian. To me this is the essence of AFS: to experience a new coun- try, school, and family to such an extent that you no longer consider yourself a citizen of one country but a citizen of the world and a brother to all mankind . .
