The entire annual is centered around the theme of the SEVEN KEYS TO HAPPINESS in which every section represents one of these keys. The first, the Key of Wisdom, symbolizes the teachers who guide our search for knowledge. The second division stands for the Key of Hope, our classes, which are the promise ofa better world. The Key of Love and Life opens the door to our way of living at Blair. The Key of Freedom represents democracy at work in our student government and in our activities. The Key of Sportsmanship signifies the importance of athletics and sportsman-like conduct in our daily life. The Key of Success, represented by the Advertisement Section, introduces the world of busi- ness. And finally comes the most important door of all, graduation, the goal of each class, opened by the Key of the Future. This key is unadorned for you alone can create its pattern. The future is yours to make. LJ 'vin'-'rr-var ff- - 4 ,, i5 9- '60 Bee Hive Dedicated John Stoddard Mr. Iohn Stoddard, supervisor of maintenance at James Blair, has been with us since 1955. His tireless service and unflagging interest in the student body and its activities have been an invaluable asset to the school. Few people realize the amount of work that is needed to keep a school well-maintained. The building must be clean and the grounds well-kept at all times. An emergency must be dealt with quickly, whether it is a bus that won't run, or a furnace that has stopped operating. Even with these many duties he has never failed to show a personal interest in all the students. To show our appreciation, we, the class of nineteen , hundred and sixty, dedicate this yearbook to Mr. John Stoddard. Our Alma Mater 1. Here sing we to James Blair, whose ideals guide usg L o 2. Mr. Cooley had long been an active member of this community and had devoted much effort to the founding of a summer rec- reational program for the students of the Williamsburg - James City County area. He held numerous offices in civic clubs, his last being president of the Ruritans. He was instrumental in the success of many recent projects that they undertook. James Blair owes much to Mr. Cooley for hisinterest in our athletic program, as he was largely responsible for the athletic field. For this untiring effort Cooley Field will stand as an everlasting memorial to him. Yes, Mr. Cooley will long be remembered in the hearts of the citizens of this community. Each year foreign students are sent over to this country to live in American homes. The American Field Service also sends abroad American students on the summer exchange program. Juniors in high school of sixteen to seventeen years of age are eligible to apply. This year, Karin Eek came to James Bflair as a Foreign Exchange Student from Geovik, Norway. She is an enthusiastic participator in various school activities, and her fresh, vigorous character has won her many friends. Next year she will return to Norway carrying with her a better understand- ing of this country. CARTER, Librarian. Library Assistants James Blair is fortunate in having its fine library. lt is one of the few schools in the state to possess a reference room well equipped for reading and study. Teachers may bring groups there for special instruction and research. Several groups of visitors, touring the school, have commented on the beauty and efficiency of the library. One reason for this efficiency lies in the services of a group of xclunteer workers. Trained by Mrs. Carter, they assist students in the proper use ofthe library and help the librarian in keeping records. Library reference room Library assistants help at the check -out desk. Good Luck to the Class 0 1959 Letter From the Editor Hi! As this hectic year of deadlines draws to a close, I wish to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your cooperation and help. Each of you has played an important part in making this year's annual a success. The parts vary from buying a yearbook to working on the staff, but each of them was essential. I also wish to especially thank the staff for your hard work. As you can see, you did a good job. The work was hard but seeing the yearbook completed is more than enough reward. A word of advice: remember how hard it is to meet a deadline and start early. Mrs. Dillard and Mr. Pittsg I can never thank you enough for your patience and understanding. Well, that's about all except good luck to you a Wtyn af Hazel Hewlett Editor-in-Chief FIDVEHTISING SUCCESS ROY D. HODGE FUEL AND TIRE COMPANY RFD 2. - U. S.
