More Thon 6,000 Books Mrs. Blanche F. Franklin, B.S. Library Science Library Club, Chairman of Library Department I-G AN ADDITION TO BHS-Mrs. Franklin and Mr. Vozar discuss the plans for the new library. QI Y A BOOK FOR EVERY SUBJECT-Mrs. Franklin and Mrs. Cox, secretary, take inventory of library books. The library at BHS will soon be no more. Of course, it is only moving approximately 40 yards, but neverthe- less it's still moving. The new library, which will not only accommodate more students but will have additional facilities to better serve the school, is scheduled to open in September of 1960. The Senior Class of 1960 is the last class to use the present library, which was organized in 1952, for the duration of its three years at BHS. Alumnae, graduating Seniors, juniors and Sophomores will remember the old library as the faithful materials center of the school. Here students found not only books, but magazines, pamphlets, pictures, filmstrips, slides, globes, maps and recordings, also, Besides the books. books, books which will move to the new library, Mrs. Blanche Franklin, who has been librarian at BHS since 1956, will also move. WANT TO GO TO COLLEGE?-Mr. Kammerer says that St. Mary's is a good choice, while Mr. Lieberman, guidance coun- selor, and Suzanne de Lathouder listen to the details. LANFEF n '5-. Counselors Guide The Guidance Department as BHS, which is approxi- mately 20 years old, was manned by three counselors this year. Miss Nancy O'Neill, the Sophomore counselor, orien- tated new students to Bladensburg, tested abilities, aided the Sophomores with their course selections and presented vocational and educational information. The junior counselor was Miss Dorothy Ehlers, and she helped the P.T.A. with Career Night, tested ability and achievement, planned programs, gave scholarship infor- mation and tested for scholarships. While not having as long a list of duties as the former two, Mr. Harry Lieberman, Senior counselor, nevertheless had quite a job sponsoring College Night and pre- senting 589 Seniors with vocational and educational information. Besides these particular duties, the Guidance Depart- ment also met with representatives from college admis- sions offices, orientated junior high school students and parents by visits to their schools and met with military recruiters. g 'Tri' -,,.1-1-- DOUG' ANOTHER MEMO-Mr. Vozar talks with office secretary, Mrs. Righter, who is in charge of the student office workers. if f V I LJAI For the past five years, through measles and mumps, Mrs. Vivian Grieashamer, a graduate of the Sibley Hos- pital School of Nursing, has managed Bladensburg Sen- ior High's infirmary. This year, aided by her student helpers, Mrs. Grieashamer administered vision, hearing, diabetes and tuberculosis tests, applied countless gallons of rubbing alcohol, shook thermometers at least 6,000 times and issued over 1,000 band aids. 18 Behind the Scenes Most familiar to absence slips, tardy students and the switchboard at Bladensburg Senior High was the secre- tarial staff. Headed by Mrs. Thelma Righter who came to BHS in 1958 and who worked in the main office, the staff consisted of Mrs. Betty Nagel who also worked in the main office, Mrs. Bernadine Turnbull who worked in the guidance office and Mrs. Doris Cox who worked in the library. Under these ladies' direction, office helpers were taught office procedure which included the filling out of myriads of absence, tardy and early dismissal notes and how to operate the ditto and switchboard.
