M41 Miss Olson Honored TEACHING AT BLADENSBURG FOR NINE YEARS-Miss Olson strikes a typical pose while conducting class Sponsoring Scroll for eight years advising Przsms for five years heading the English department several times including the present year and working with the Senior Classes of the past nine years are some of the duties assumed by Miss Therese Olson in addition to teachmg English American Literature and ournalism I and II Besides being the guiding light behind Bladensburgs newspaper and literary magazine Miss Olson has brought fame to BHS through her own journalistic efforts In 1956 tional American Legion Auxiliary Essay Contest and poems by her authorship have been published in the National Poetry Anthology for eight consecutive years A native of Plattsmouth Nebraska Miss Olson received her training at Rosary College Illinois and Wlisconsm State Teachers College and her graduate study at Catholic University University of California University of Mary land and George Washington University Before commg to Bladensburg in 1951 she taught in Chlcago and the Chicago suburbs for fifteen years In addition to her school activities Miss Olson has 8 found time to help establish the National Catholic Society for Animal Welfare Membership in organizations in cludes National Education Association Maryland Teach ers Association Prmce Georges Teachers Association National Council of English Teachers and the College Park Creative Writing Club Miss Olson has a variety of personal interests rang mg from a passion for books and symphonic music to kittens are her special weaknesses and she has provided homes for many stray animals found in the school build mg Chessie and Phizzie are her special cat friends who according to Miss Olson rule and regulate her life Definitely an important addition to BHS through her endeavors to advance the literary taste and the journalis tic standards of the student body Miss Olson s has been a large contribution durmg her nine years as a member of the Bladensburg faculty As such the 1960 Blade staff feels it has made a logical decision for the ded1cat1on of this yearbook l l 1 1 u 4 n Q 1 , - A , . , , , . , . . , J . n , she won the Department of Maryland award in the Na- a dislike for spinach and rock 'n roll records.
