YEARBOOK is the history of the yearly activities of the student body, and the history compiled in this publication we, the yearbook crew, have endeavored to make as nearly accurate as possible. However, it is very difficult to gather all the sentiments of over one-thousand students into one small volume. The staff hopes, nevertheless, that throughout these pages you will ind some picture or phrase which will recall to you the details of your past years at Bladensburg. For many of the staff this required spending nights working, arranging pictures, typing copy, and doing I all the small tasks so essential for a publication. This involved sacrificing weekends, cutting classes, losing hours of sleep, and spending much time working. This has not been drudging work, for we have had fun assembling the contents of the PEACECROSSER. There have been mistakes and the errors are present. How- ever, we hope that you will find this book full of memories of the past year. I, as the editor, would like to thank all those people who gave their time so generously and patiently in order to complete this volume. My thanks go to the photographers, who labored in the darkroom for many a day, to the girls who typed and read copy, to the ad-getters, to the writers, to the bookkeeper, and to all of those who gave their time and energies so willingly in order to complete jobs that are asked of them. ' I We, the PEACECROSSER staff, present this yearbook to you, for your approval and criticism. May it help I you to remember the class of '5I and may we wish you, the underclassmen, the best of luck in your future l years at Bladensburg. 3 EDITOR, DOROTHY MUDD. . MAKE-Up Canino g0Hr.J:C. This is the third year at Bladensburg High School that the Student Court has been organized. The purpose of this organization is to eliminate many offenses which occur throughout the school. Students who receive summonses for breaking school rules are sent to the court where their cases are heard and tried by the jury. After the defendant has stated his case and the jury reaches its verdict, judge joe Hartman pronounces a penalty. This method of fair trial has proved to be a great help in maintaining school order during its years here at Bladensburg High School. we pfaincgnfdedmen . xl! THE STUDENT COUNCIL proved this year, better than ever, that it is a fine form of government for Bladens- burg High School. It is representative ofthe student body and has been active in helping to establish Worthwhile rules that improve the school and gain beneficial liberties for the pupils. One ofthe organiza- tionis other important activity for the year has been visitation at other schools to study their various gov- ernments in action. Several so- cial events were added to the usual schedule of events. Along with these, the society had its inductions and initia- tions. Also, the N. H. To be eligible for the society one must have good character, scholarship, leader- ship, and must have displayed service to the school. With their accustomed fervor, the senior and junior groups com- pleted special projects, sponsored a success- ful Harvest', dance, provided religious pro- grams and participated in post-meeting recreational activities. This year, the Bladensburg chapter had an approximate membership of thirty girls under the spon- sorship of Mrs. Regan. The members, who were very active, planned and completed many projects. These included a fashion show for the girls in the school, a visit to another home economics department, sup- port of an overseas campaign, and preparation of exhibits for the Marlboro Fair next fall. The above statement holds true of how I would describe the 1950 football season at Bladensburg. In 1949, when we won the football championship, our schedule was comprised of five b conference games and one with outside competition. This year, we played five conference F901 a games and three games other than those in our league. Our schedule was difficult in H. Several respects. We started early with McKinley Tech of Washington, D. C. iwhich I9 eventually went on to win the western division diademl and lost 39-6. This game served its purpose as we uncovered several weaknesses -namely, our ends which later in the Season became our strong point. Our second game was against Bethesda, and the contest ended in a 6-6 deadlock. It was during -this contest that the team showed signs of becoming a winner. Anderson, Chinn and Cal Greencp Etood out on offense, with J. Medina, Bieligk, Groves, Thrift and Lon f outstanding on e ense. EThe Laurel game was won by Bladensburg, 40-6. This avalanche of touchdowns was featured by Buddy Baumgardneris scintillating 85-yard run of the second half kickoff. Greenbelt was beaten by the scoiie ofh26-it Eire, tlre Tuning and blocking of gobpy Alnderson were outstanding, and for the first time, the timin and team ay t at a een ac ing in past games were isp aye . The Mt. Rainier gaiie was worln 20-6 but my hat is off to Joe Murphy, my friend, and his team for their stellar playing. Our boys quickly capitalized in two igunblesdto score Early in the first quarter. The work of our ends, Bieligk and Groves, lus the continued fine work o Ponc on Me ina, stoo out. D Twenty-six to six was the score by which we lost to the powerladen cadets of St. John's, who later went on to play for the Metropolitan Football Championship against our neighbors from Eastern. The boys wanted this one badly, and the coaching staff, plus the squad, went through probably the most gruelling three days of football practice in our young football history. My hat is off to joey Gallagher for his fine football club which was by far the best team we have played in two years. The big one was next - Maryland Park, the team we had beaten in '49 for the championship. We offer no excuses for this game which we lost 12-6 to a better team. This contest, like all championship games was hard fought and rugged. It was straight football with no fancy trimmings, just sock 'em and sock ,emu with the edge going to the hard-charging Trojans from Maryland Park. As in all contests, someone has to lose, and my heart swelled with pride as my boys congratulated the victors for their winning effort. At no time in my many ypars at Blads-:nsburig haves felt sluclh prim? With true Bladensburg tradition we bounced back five days later to defeat Hyattsville 13-0, My hat goes off to John Shearer in this contest for his line all-around playing. This tall youngster from Landover Hills played probably the finest game of his high school career. I hope that like his predecessor, Paul Magtutu, he will go to college and continue his fine play. It would not be fitting to close this article without expressing our gratitude to two very dear friends of our football pro- gram. First, we should like to pay tribute to our dearly beloved and lately departed Superintendent of Schools, Mr. G. Card- ener Shugart, for his efforts in making a football program possible in Prince C-eorge's County. Second, we should like to say a big Thank you! to Mr. john Devine, our former head line coach, for his fine spirit, his friendliness, and his hard work with our team. COACH MEARLE DUVALL. FOR many years we seniors have dreamed of and planned for our graduation, often not fully appreciating the advantages offered to us by Bladensburg High School. Now that we are prepared to shoulder more adult responsibilities and experiences, we look back upon our years here and know that they have been some of the best. The companionship, the school spirit, the creative guidance of our kind faculty, the feeling of democracy so prevalent in our school activities - these are the things that we will miss. The senior hall is symbolic of the many days which we have spent at B. H. S. It brings memories of the morn- ing crowds gathered outside of classrooms, the clanging of lockers opening and shutting, the rush to get to classes, and the 3:30 bell. Night activities, which found many students dashing through our empty, echoing corridor in order to prepare for meetings and attend games and performances will also take their place in our memories of The Senior Hallf, When we leave Bladensburg, there will be a feeling of sadness, but also a feeling of deep gratitude for having been well prepared for the future.
