The Bladensburg Chapter of the National Honor Society, a nation-Wide organization, again this year functioned as a fine group under the inspiring spon- sorship of Miss Nancy O,Neill. The high standards of Character,'Leadership, Service and Scholarship, plus grade averages of 2.75 made each of the So- ciety's members conscious of the honor that he had received. The formal inductions were held in the auditor- ium, each member dressed in a robe and carrying a candle. As the strains of the processional were heard, the audience seemed to hold its breath, await- ing the moment when each new inductee would be tapped on his shoulder-and would become a mem- ber of the Honor Society. The oilicers chosen Were: Carroll Cuppett, Presi- dent, Jeanne Peake, Vice-President, Charlotte Tay- lor, Secretary, and Gloria Sinyard, Treasurer. Again this year, the group sponsored the Honor Roll, on which all students having on their report cards at least four A's and the remainder Bas, were listed each semester. The staff worked very hard to pre- sent an interesting and informative paper every month, and was truly rewarded to see the approving glances of the students as they read the news, fea- turc and sport pages of the Scroll. As the couples entered the auditorium, they saw the beautiful Winter Rosen decorative theme and soon were dancing to the music of Pat Everett and her Serenaders. Blue and white streamers gave the effect of a heavy winter sky and large snow balls hung leisurely from the ceiling. On the stage, as a background for the orchestra, was a large lattice- work screen covered with huge, red roses. The evening was elimaxed by the Grand March. The ro- cession passed through the snowy, rose covered trellis, lcdphy the class oflieers-Harold Lloyd, Matthew Heard, Margaret Souder, and Gloria Sinyard. The turnout of seventy-live enthusiastic boys, later narrowed down to twenty-six, was a direct indication that soccer is here to stay, despite the fact that football, in its iirst year, took over as the top autumn sport. Dreams Do Come True! Dreams do come true! When Mr. Barnhart said we had to attend a special meeting in Upper Marlboro with Mr. Schugart, little did I realize that Bladensburg would field a championship football team in-1949. With the innovation of the gridiron game and the formation of a six-team.conference, consisting of Greenbelt, Maryland Park, Hyattsville, Laurel, Mt. Rainier, and Bladensburg, plans for spring football were made. With the aid of Armand Biscontini, biology teacher, and Elton Miller, a stu- dent with a keen eye for football coaching but too old to play, we called for volunteers to start spring football practice in March, 1949. Approximately 150 boys answered the challenge. Big, small, stout, skinny, short, and tall they fit every descrip- tion, but all showed the true Bladensburg spirit by their coopera- tion and determination to make our first season a successful one. After ten days of good hard work consisting of football theory, fundamentals of line and backfield play, and, of course, the in- troduction of our system, the T formation, the squad was re- duced to 56 boys. These 56 boys were invited back on August 27 to start the hard grind so essential to making a season a successful one. Little did we coaches dream that, our football equipment would be so complete. Complete practice equipment and game equip- ment to suit 30 boys were supplied us by the county. No ex- pense was spared to give each and every boy the Hncst equip- ment to assure his safety. The county also made its finest! con- tribution when we were notified that each boy would be insured in case of injury. It seemed that no one in the county and the local townships could do enough to help this new program get off on the right foot. The Park and Planning Commission did its share by helping put our practice field in shape, and Mr. Robin- son, Superintendent of Maintenance, helped fix a room in which the boys could dress and the newly purchased equipment be stored safely. Bladensburg was also very fortunate in hiring Mr. john Devine to teach in the commercial department and later in dis- covering that he also was an outstanding lineman at Susque- hanna Univcrsity and an ardent football pupil under Alonzo Stagg, the Grand Old Man of Footballf, This increased the coaching staff to four members-two line coaches and two back- field coaches. The material at Bladensburg was very good for a team start- ing its first season of football. After cutting the squad down to 30 boys, several scrimmages were arranged to give the boys the experience they so needed before playing their first game against Greenbelt. On successive Saturdays the team scrimmaged against Rockville and Charlotte Hall Military Academy with fairly decent results. VVhen school finally settled down to its normal routine, we all felt that our first effort toward gridiron fame would be a .-,, . These senior lassies in maroon and white were under the able direction of California's Helen Helpenstell. Performing with these girls were two majorettes, Carolyn Taliaferro and Nancy Coon. The majorettes and flag twirlers were an excellent incentive to the Bladensburg teams, added greatly, to the enthusiasm during games, and opened a grand new field at Bladens- burg High. BAND The band, organized this year as part of Prince Georges Countyis Instrumen- tal Music Programv, has great expecta- tions. Formed by bringing together in- struments from both this school and the junior high, it is growing steadily in both performance and size, and M. D. CHEERLEADERS We salute our girls in the maroon skirts and white sweaters. To them much credit is due for their untiring efforts, their loyalty, and their leadership in de- veloping a fine school spirit. As they ran onto the soccer field, the basketball court, or the gridiron, we were proud to say they represented our school. The ten girls chosen from the sopho- more, junior and senior classes intro- duced many new cheers. The enthu- siasm and vigor they displayed helped to lead our teams on to victory. Ann Merrell Smith and Betty Lee Cissel were elected captain and co-captain, respec- tively. Much credit should also go to Miss Anderson who spent many hours after school directing the girls. This is the year, the mid-century mark, when we leave our high school life for another, in which we shall find new problems, goals and pleasures. We shall meet these challenges unafraid because we know that our years at Bladensburg have prepared us well. The day in Iune on which We graduate is somehow always sad. Sud- denly, we Grand Old Seniorsv feel a slight twinge, the existence of which we won't admit, as we look upon the freshmen, just beginning something which is complete for us. The memories of games, dances, classes, and deep friend- ships become very valuable ones. But, as a senior class, let us look ahead to the future as a challenge to all. We're hoping that the fine memories of B.H.S., stored deep in our hearts, will give us a goal toward which we must strive, that of a happy, serviceable and Worthwhile life.
