Foreword In 1907 Blackstone High School was a pioneer in public education for rural Virginia. It set its standards high: four years of English, of Latin, of history, of mathematics, and of science. As prin- cipal there came a young college graduate, William Ralph Wrigglesworth, who, as scholar and administrator,left an indelible mark on our county. After fifty years, the classic columns of the old school still stand proudly, sym- bols of a community's faith in education. Shabby and crumbling as they are now, its walls have known great teaching. Shake- speare and Vergil, Poe and Scott and Lee became alive for generations of students. From it and its companion building have come scholars and professional men who have won distinction in many fields. Boys have left to take their parts in two great wars,and children from many states and countries have found a place there, Above all, for fifty years Blackstone High Schoolhas given its students a stand- ard and a way of life that, translated into action, has enriched our community. Young and old have been united by common mem- ories and ideals. The students today are proudly conscious that they are the heirs of ''a goodly heritage. Therefore we have planned our anni- versary volume of the IVY to show the old and the new with ''the thread that runs so true'' between them. We hope that all who read may be reminded of the high purposes found here: ''To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
