It set its standards high: four years of English, of Latin, of history, of mathematics, and of science. As prin- cipal there came a young college graduate, William Ralph Wrigglesworth, who, as scholar and administrator, left an indelible mark on our county. After fifty years, the classic columns of the old school still stand proudly, sym- bols of a community's faith in education. Shabby and crumbling as they are now, its walls have known great teaching. Shake- speare and Vergil, Poe and Scott and Lee became alive for generations of students. From it and its companion building have come scholars and professional men who have won distinction in many fields. Boys have left to take their parts in two great wars, and children from many states and countries have found a place there, Above all, for fifty years Blackstone High Schoolhas given its students a stand- ard and a way of life that, translated into action, has enriched our community. Young and old have been united by common mem- ories and ideals. The students today are proudly conscious that they are the heirs of ''a goodly heritage. Therefore we have planned our anni- versary volume of the IVY to show the old and the new with ''the thread that runs so true'' between them. We hope that all who read may be reminded of the high purposes found here: ''To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield. Measured by that standard, Sam's life was full and rich, Through all the years of pain and weakness, he never admitted defeat. When he was un- able to attend classes, he kept up his interest in everything that we did at school, He kept his zest in music even when he was too weak to express it with his beloved drums, It is hard for us to realize that Sam's gallant fight is over. It is hard too for us to express our feelings in words, but we have faith that he did not lose, His was a victory o f a spirit that did not know defeat. We are grateful forall that he has givenus, Our school work and games and fun have become more valuable to us because we realized what they could mean to him. Many of us, we hope, have become more thoughtful and considerate because of our visits and our letters tohim. Because he was our friend, we are better, and wiser, and braver. 31 ‘ - IES We ee A NE dre ae ee, de! ‘ : : cde et aS SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS: Carol Bridgeman--President; Vice President-- Joan Tunstall; Secretary--Betty Daniels; S.C.A. Those of us who really knew him and to whom he meant so much could readily say you couldn't hope or expect to know a finer person. Hugh Yelverton accomplished much in different phases of his brief life. There was his dedicated church work, his successfully rising athletic ability, and scholastic capability --all backed with true sincerity. There was the everyday side of his nature, too. Hugh was ''fun-to-be-with' ' and the type you missed when he wasn't around, He was faithful as a friend and depend- able. He was easy to talk to and a good listener, too. Con- sideration, helpfulness, honesty, and cheerfulness, in the very best sense of the word, were alltraits of his character, He was just an all-around likeable boy. For us, there has been a blank feeling of something lack- ing on not finding him at the movie or the Youth Center or at church and nowat school. Although we all will have to accept his absence, we will keep dear the memory of those great times together with the best of friends.
