Mr. Bender, the director Glee Club The Glee Club is composed of students from the eighth through the twelfth grades who have a special in- terest in music, The purpose of the Glee Club is to pro- mote a greater interest and participation in music in the school and the community, The music is varied from joyous to serious and from pop to classical. For this reason, all the mem- bers except John Koonce, Frank Davis, and Sam Harrel- son are beginners, just learning theirinstruments, They are working inclasses of mixed instruments: the high school, two class periods a week; and the grade school, one. This spring a big campaign for next year's of- ficers swept the school. Every morning there were always more new posters up on the walls. On election day one could hardly see the walls for the posters. In the auditorium, one candi- date had signs suspended in the airby helium filled ballons. Another candidate had a banner hung across the stage. These are only examples of the many original and cciorful slogans used. Onelection day, the candidates and all the other students were anxiously waiting to hear the final results of the voting. They were studying for the annual driving rodeo. Al- though the contest was open to both boys and girls, there were no girl contestants. Maybe they just couldn't musterup enough nerve. The test consisted of two parts. First the boys were given a written test, then they went to the stadium to try out their driving skills. The winner was Frank Davis. He was presented a plaque by Mr. Cecil Vaughan. Three other boys, who were close behind Frank and who were given certifi- cates, were Joe Borum, Tommy West,and Bobby Daniels. The dinner featured ham andfried chicken. After the banquet everyone went to the dance. Paper lan- terns, greenery, and a stone wall around the room gave the dance floor a southernatmosphere. Colored paper streamers were hung overhead. The Juniors really did a beautiful job, and the Seniors had a wonderful time. Ernest brings Patsy a corsage for the dance. Betty and T. Graduation On the night of June 7th, 26 Seniors nervously awaited the first chords of Pomp and Circumstance. All were think- ing about the fun and sorrows of the past years and wondering what the future would hold for them. After the invocation, class president, Glenn Hurt, presentedthe theme--''Educa- tion for Effective and Positive Living. Roger Williams, salutatory, gave a talk on ''Educationto Prepare for Good Citizen- ship.'' Glenn Hurt chose 'Education to Combat the Threat of Communism for his topic, and Jerry Blevins had ''Educa- tion to Live inthe Atomic Age ! for his topic. Mr. Wildman gave out the awards. Anne Clay, Billy Abernathy, and Ernest Robertson received athletic awards. Joy Wainwright, Otho Fraher, and Peggy Sut- phin received journalism medals. Peggy also wona scholarship medal, and the Woman's Club scholarship. Anne Clay and Jerry Blevins were given the citizen- ship award. Rachel Hudson received the library award. Following the awards, Peggy Sutphin, valedictory, gave a talk on ''Education to Recognize the Important Things in Life. ' All of this came toa wonderful climax when Mr. Parr handedthem their diplomas and pronounced them as graduates of Blackstone High School. The Senior class presented a new United States flag anda new Virginia flagtothe school. They alsogave 16 books to the library. The Seniors straighten their caps before marching in.
