Jz l £ ) V£ f Margaret E. Spry Editor Li LLIAN WESSELLS Business Manager LOU • • • • To one whom we love and respect; and in whom we have the greatest confidence; to one who has used his time and his talents to improve this school which means so much to us; to our president, Mr. J. Paul Glick, with a feeling of pride and pleasure we dedicate this annual of 1938. T IME passes on It cannot stay, But in its fleeting course Plants memories along the way. Pleasant ones, sad ones. Too vast to be retold, But memories of Blackstone These pages will unfold. lewj “ DISTANCE lends enchantment — Here ' s a scene each student loves. Upon the web of memory This view is clearly spun, And remembered are the friendships That in Blackstone have been won. fELL remembered are these niches. Symbolizing strength and grace. Under them pass eager feet Of those beginning life ' s great race. Well prepared within this college. May our lines reflect its strength. May other lives be made more noble By the lives we dose at length. m _• i 1 1 1 ■ I vHI f . L ' - m mu i The stile . . . this scene is lovely. How suggestive is each stone, For our life upon this campus Is, in truth, a stepping stone; To a life of greater service And endeavor on our part, Alma Mater, guide our footsteps As you’ve guided each young heart. So—around these stately columns Tangle vivid memories Of campus life and campus scenes; Of days we ' ve lived , Of girls we ' ve loved , And dreams that we have dreamed. —M. MacK.enz.ie Haig. Dr. J. C. White Mr. J. Arthur Hardy eniotiam A SHADOW was cast over the town of Blackstone and this college by the death of Dr. John Cecil White, our college physician. Dr. White rendered his services so willingly, so unselfishly, for the welfare of others. His sympathetic disposition and understanding, qualities so essential for a doctor, were always in evidence. The memory of Dr. White will linger long with us, and a life like this is a goal toward which many will strive. • • • The community of Blackstone feels deeply the loss of one of its most prominent citizens, Mr. J. Arthur Hardy. Blackstone College shares this loss, for the deceased had been a member of the Board of Trustees from the time the college was established. Mr. Hardy was active in church and civic affairs. His sincere, Christian character made for him a wide circle of friends. Death cannot remove from our midst the influence of one so loyal. tee S. L. Do not awaken. Sleep, for sleep is kind. (When will you see again the slanting rain?) Sleep through the night. Perhaps the singing wind Will calm my heart, and will relieve my pain. Seeking truth that makes us free, Seeking courage, faith and wisdom, And the strength to triumph wrong. Hear, oh, hear us, loving mother. As we lift to thee our song! Chorus Guide, oh guide us, mother dear! May we ever feel thee near, May thy daughters live and love And grow forever, mother dear, Oh - Oh Blackstone, here’s to thee, Here’s to truth that makes us free, Here’s to fame and praise and honor, And a student ' s love for thee! Hail—oh Blackstone, Alma Mater, We with grateful hearts do sing, For we called and thou didst answer, Did thy treasures to us bring, Did unfold to us the mysteries Both of books and friendships true; Now thy daughters answer gladly, Here’s our love, Blackstone, to you! Oh—Oh Blackstone, Alma Mater! As we sing our parting lay, Life’s work calls; we dare not linger. Though with thee, we fain would stay. Parting comes, but we ll remember These our happy college days, And be true to thee, dear mother, Guide us with thy love, we pray. • • • Agnor, Rosa Lee .R. F. Miss Wingo (showing a prospective student around the college): Now, this is the gymnasium. Prospective Student: Fine! Now take me through the curriculum. I hear you have a splendid one here. Waverly: I wonder how old Miss Wold is? Mary Virginia Woodson: Quite old, I imagine. They say she used to teach Caesar. Evelyn Burford was at the show the other day and a couple of girls sitting behind her insisted upon talking continuously. Evelyn turned around and said, Pardon me, but I can’t hear a word. Well! one girl replied, you’re not supposed to; it’s a private conversation. Mona Teets: Can I go through that gate? Little Boy: I guess so, a load of hay just went through. Lil Wessells received a big order for the canteen. She was disappointed in it because it wasn ' t up to standard. Lil wired the manufacturers to cancel order immediately. Soon she got a telegram which read, Sorry, you will have to wait your turn. . . . This happened the night of the presentation of The Skull. Everything was ready and Mrs. Nelson said tensely, All right, Andy, run up the curtain. ... One morning Scotty was late for the dishwasher. Skee rushed in to awaken her: Scotty, eight a’clock, eight a’clock!” Scotty, thinking she was at it again, just turned over and said, Well, why don’t you get Dr. Hurt? Elsie Parker was counting up the days until she would see Bill again. How many days in each month? she asked Maurine. Maurine replied: Thirty days hath September’ All the rest I can’t remember. The calendar hangeth on the wall, Why bother me with this at all? Carol Briner handed in her registration card to Miss Dejarnette. Miss Thorp, who was standing near by, picked it up and started to read it. “What is your name?’ ’ Miss Thorp asked. “Don ' t you see my signature on the registration card?” Carol asked her indignantly. “I do, Miss Thorp answered. “That is what aroused my curiosity.” Brat Jones: Hey, Maizie, did you notice the gorgeous fur coat worn by the woman in front of us in church this morning? Maizie: No, I don’t believe I did. I was dozing most of the time. Brat: Heck! A lot of good it does you to go to church. . . . Things to remind us of basketball trips. While on the way to E. C. T. C. Miss Mims, as usual, stopped the car at a filling station for information rather than gasoline. “How far is it to Greenville, North Carolina? she asked the filling station attendant. “Well,” the ever-obliging man answered, “it’s about 24,967 miles the way you are going, but if you turn around and go the other way it ain ’t but four miles. ' ’ We’ll never forget the trouble Mrs. Nelson had going to Westhampton. First the ignition key broke and then something went phooey with the starter. While the mechanic was fixing it, a man stood staring. Mrs. Nelson, already peeved, asked: “At what are you staring—is this the first motor car you’ve ever seen?” “No,” he replied, “but it is mighty like it.” Mrs. Toivnlady (as she met Miss Teats and Miss Dejarnette on the street one day near the end of the term): Oh, I thought you had gone!
