Y« 1C H JOSEPHINE SHEARER EDITOR-IN-CHIEF JEAN HARING BUSINESS MANAGER (coupon PUBLISHED BY FUE STUDENl DCDy Cl A€r$T€NE COLLEGE BLACKSTONE • VIRGINIA i i r n 4ii tl ERE within these pages of the Acorn of 1933, we have attempted to gather and to hold through the years the reflection and spirit of the life of a Blackstone Girl. In our own Dutch Garden we have pictured and recorded her activities and ideals, her dreams and ambitions, with simplicity and sincerity in the steady way of the Dutch. So to you, our Blackstone Girl, we present this volume of the Acorn and give to it the task of keeping alive your lovely memories of DEDICATION Because of her affectionate interest and sympathetic understanding of each student problem, because of her splendid companion¬ ship in work and play, and because she is truly a part of the college to which she has endeared herself, we dedicate this, the XV Volume of the 1933 Acorn to MIX LCLISE NEWDILL II EEI 1 N A I HA HAT E E I. Oh dear Blackstone, Aiwa Mater, We thy daughters come to thee, Seeking friends that make us nobler, Seeking truth that makes us free, Seeking courage, faith and wisdom, And the strength to triumph wrong. Hear, oh, hear us, loving mother, As zee lift to thee our song. CHORUS Guide, oh guide us, mother dear, May zee ever feel thee near, May thy daughters live and love And graze forever, mother dear, Oh—Oh Blackstone, here ' s to thee, Here ' s to truth that makes us free. Here ' s to fame and praise and honor And a student’s love for thee. ii. Hail—oh Blackstone, Alma Mater, We with grateful hearts do sing, For zee called and thou didst anszeer. Did thy treasures to us bring. Did unfold to us the mysteries, Both of books and friendships true. Now thy daughters anszeer gladly, Here ' s our love, Blackstone, to you. hi. Oh—Oh Blackstone, Alma Mater, As zee sing our parting lay, Life ' s work calls, zee dare not linger, Though zeith thee, zee fain would stay Parting comes, but zee ' ll remember These our happy college days. And be true to thee, dear mother, Guide us zeith thy love, zee pray. Night was done; and as 1 stood on the hill-top And gloried in God ' s greeting to the world, I suddenly saw beyond the great horizon; Saw Life ' s path unroll for a little way. Till it became fainter and fainter, And the outlines were no longer clear. Startled, I paused and pondered. For now I knew what the dawning meant. I was at the dawning of a day I knew nothing of; Yet 1 was not afraid, for behind me was Not a lonely night, but a time That I had spent girding myself for this dawn, A starry night, and every star helping me onward; A gay and joyful night, enchanting me — Tzvo years of happy school life, friendship, and trust. And while I looked I saw the etching tide Of loneliness flood high, and leave its trace Of sorrow in the eyes that searched all space For just one friend;—I turned away and sighed. Then you came by and smiled and greeted me, A little grain of greeting, yet it made So many ripples that scarce could see The loneliness that in those eyes had played. And there in answer to my silent plea Your loznng face has lingered and has stayed. [60] WILSON ROUDABUSH MURRAY Senior High School Class Louise Wilson. Susan Roudabush. Cornelia Murray... Within a convent I should find the height Of purity and peace, and only one Straight way to follow, and no wrongs to shun — My soul well guided by a higher might. Then would l cease my longing for the poiver To stir all hearts with beauty finely made By my own hands, for beauty there would be As pure and simple as a God-made flower, And beauty that on earth must some day fade Would find therein its immortality.” [ 120 ] (HI «J M (□!
