In Tiie Acorn, you have recounted much of its history and reflected many pictures of college days. As you, from time to time, look through these pages as the years come and go, your heart will he stirred by many memories. You will look again on faces of dear friends; you will recall fun and frolic; you will find both sunshine and shadow, as through these pages you live again the days that have gone. As your picture smiles up at you or looks with the earnest questioning of youth, it may ask, “Are you the woman this girl wanted you to be ?” It is my earnest prayer that youth’s finest and truest ideals may be realized in your life. May your thought of these college days be happy thoughts, and may life’s sunset he the beautiful ending of a day well spent. I 15 ] GEORGE P. ADAMS SECRETARY AND TREASURER N. P. We were eager, yes, for we were young and did not realize the immensity of the task we were undertaking. Our entrance was an adventure, and we expected to wander through and delight in what we found on the way. But, alas, the adventure was not to be of our guiding, for the seniors soon took us in hand and pointed out with severity, and sometimes with minor tortures, the path we were to travel. AA ' e proved ourselves worthy, however, and won the hearty approval and, in some cases, justly deserved admiration of all the upperclassmen. We discovered that we were supposed to know a vast number of things which we did not know. We were plunged into despair, but soon learned that by daily applying ourselves to our tasks we would become adjusted to our new life. One pleasant milestone in our first journey occurred in April when we gave our minstrel. Thus June came, and with its coming we began to realize our future responsibilities, for we were no longer freshmen. It was in September, 1931, that we came back as seniors, and our duty was to lead the freshmen along “That Lane” and to see that there was no loitering on the way. We had difficult tasks to perform; it was our duty to see that the dignity of the College was maintained on athletic and forensic stages. We realized that the College .belonged to us and that we belonged to the College. This year has been a struggle, but our goal was in view, just ahead, and we have overcome all difficulties and obstructions. AVe have felt ourselves growing and have begun to look on life more seriously. We have labored at our scholastic pur¬ suits and for the College with an earnestness which was evidenced in the things which we have accomplished. We were busy with the development of ourselves— with our working in the present and our looking into the future. The dignity and thrill of Seniordom has been ours. As seniors we have felt happiness mingled with grief. AA e worked ever with sadness in our hearts, and cheered our College with a catch in our throats. We have smiled and told ourselves how glad we would lie when we had finished College and were out in the world, but we knew it was not true. We knew that we should ever gather to ourselves memories of College life and hold them on high to light our future days. The gates are opening; the moments slip from us; we are out in the world! Far, far before stretch the days down which we must hurry—the days that lead to everything or nothing. —FRANCES MARTIN. r 39 ] Senior Class Prophecy T was late afternoon and all the world was quiet. There had been a gentle rain, hut now the sun was out and everything was glistening. The sun was just beginning to set, and already a crimson glow shone behind the western hills. The beauty of it thrilled me so that 1 walked out on a lonely hillside to watch the last dying rays cast from Apollo’s chariot. While I stoo l there, I seemed to see among the fast-moving clouds a figure. 1 gazed and gazed until whom should I behold, to my utmost astonishment and wonder, but Apollo himself? His brilliancy dazzled me and I turned away for a brief moment, only to be drawn back by a fascinating voice saying: “You may have one wish—one wish! Speak quickly ere 1 vanish.’’ What should I wish? Many thoughts ran through my mind. Then suddenly 1 spoke clearly and boldly: “Thou most honored Apollo, my one wish at the present moment is to know the fate of my classmates of ' 32 at Blaekstone College.” Apollo was quite startled at this wish as I could readily see, but he answered quickly: “As you wish I Focus your attention on yon bright star above that distant mountain, and you shall see the fate of your class of ’32.” I was tense with excitement, and upon fixing my eyes on the star, 1 began to see figures moving, now so blurred that I could not) distinguish them, but clearer and clearer the picture grew until before my eyes was a room which appeared to be a laboratory full of different kinds of apparati, test tubes, and chemicals. There, gazing through a microscope was one of the greatest chemists of the day—Nellie Martin. Before 1 could see anything else, the scene vanished, and in its stead 1 saw the inside of the White House where Marion Dowding, in her most charming manner, was presiding as “First Lady of the Land.” Quickly the scene changed and I saw the tennis courts at Wimbledon, with two slim, white-clad figures flashing across the court. The last set ended and the thunderous applause brought me out of my daze to the realization that Lottie Burch was the world’s tennis champion. Then I saw before me a court room in the midst of which sat a most brilliant lawyer, one who had never lost a case, literally hypnotizing the jury with her Portian powers—M ary K locke. The court room vanished and the scene which next greeted mv eyes was the office of one of New York ' s leading newspapers, and at her desk, as chief editor, sat Virginia Stickley. She was busy, reading a review of the newest books by one of the most famous of the modern critics, Hettie Skelton. The scene shifted, and I found myself in the office of the Supreme Court, and there, to my astonishment, sat a woman as chief justice. She was no other than Frances Martin, who had received her early training in Miss Heflin’s political science class at Blaekstone College. [ 40 ] The next scene was still in our nation’s capitol and I began to believe that woman had indeed found her place in the world of politics, for in the Senate Hall, as one of the Old Dominion’s representativ es, sat Mary Eastham. Next, 1 saw the gymnasium of a large Northern girls’ college, and “Gin’’ Harrow was coaching one of the strongest basket-ball teams in the East. Ah! What a familiar picture I see next—the main street of Blackstone. But it has changed! There is a huge stone building, Blackstone Library, and whom do 1 see in charge of it but Katherine (day? The scene shifted to a popular residential section of the town, and, as next door neighbors, I saw Elizabeth Hooker and Ora Deane, both happily married. Next I saw a small apartment in the city of Richmond and learned that another of my classmates had found happiness at the altar. Louise Jeffreys was wearing a plain gold band with her diamond. The apartment vanished, and in another section of Richmond I saw the future of Mildred Echols as manager and instructor in the “Parisienne Beauty Shoppe.’’ Still the scene was in Richmond and within the cool white walls of a famous hospital 1 saw Mary Abbott Weisiger as Head Nurse. Richmond vanished and 1 saw a beautiful home in southern Virginia. Sitting on a vine-covered porch, reading a book was Marion Gockes, who then had her M. R. S. degree. 1 noticed that the book was written by one of the most popular and fascinating authors of the day, Ruth Crutchfield. A miraculous change took place! 1 saw on a large ocean liner Marion Fletcher, honeymooning with the one and only gem of her life. Next I saw a large high school in southern Virginia and there, teaching the kindergarten department, was Winnie Mason. The scene shifted again to Blackstone and our Alma. Mater. In the history class room was Jean May, lecturing to a large class of dignified seniors. In a smaller room, I saw someone seated at a desk, reading date permissions. It must be the dean. Presently she turned around, and I saw—Edith Slusser. New York! Ah, 1 wonder which of my classmates sought her fortune there. Quickly the scene narrowed and there before my eyes was a popular New York theater, running one of the most outstanding plays of the season. Elizabeth Linder was widely acclaimed as the very able director. The picture faded and seeing before me the city of Charlottesville I imme¬ diately thought of “Kitty” Hawkins. “Now,” I wonder, “what is ‘Kitty doing?’ Tt was not long before 1 knew, for I saw her with her husband, a professor at the I ' Diversity of Virginia. The scene vanished and there remained before my eyes only a bright star in the skv. No! There was Apollo bowing and descending into the abode of the sun. Dav was done; but 1 considered it a well-spent day, having acquired the knowledge of the future of the class of ’32. AMANDA II Ain:. I 41 ] Class Poem At dose of day, adieu sinks the sun Into the mountains and. the sea, W e see the blends of lovely lines Which shade our doors of destiny. Iu one quick flash of past there come Fond memories sweet, and deep, Like snow-capped mounts and blue-toned hills. In pictured haze we long to keep. r Ldie gleaming orb fades from our view.
