1964 SEASON RECORD Jeff Miller brought 35 yards and the first Brave Left to right: Mr. Mike Brkliacich, line coach: Mr. George Pesut, head coach: Mr. Don Norrby, J. V. coach: Mr. Lowell Like, end coach. The Braves, picked to finish last in the West Valley Athletic League, began their season with a surprise 7-0 shutout over the Palo Alto Vikings. A runback of a Palo Alto fumble by Ron Focht brought 85 yards and a score. Blackford was solidly trounced by the St. Francis Lancers 27-O in a night game on the Lancers' own field. The Braves' two scoring opportunities were erased by a fine Lancer defense. Campbell led the Braves 12-O at halftime in the first league encounter for Blackford. The second half showing by the Braves included two touch- downs and a conversion kicked by Chuck Peterson to provide the win. Westmont managed a score against the Braves in the second league game, but Brave place kicker Chuck Peterson again provided the winning tally for a 7-6 win. The Braves battled Camden to a 14-19 deficit in the fourth quarter and were driving to another touchdown when a 15 yard penalty and a fumbled ball combined to give Camden an easy fourth touchdown for the win. The Los Gatos game was to be the last in quarterback Dan Jackson's high school career, and the Braves became fired up for a 14-O win over the Wildcats. A Dan Jackson pass to halfback BLACKFORD OPPONENT 7-O Palo Alto O-27 St. Francis 13-12 Campbell 7-6 Westmont 14-26 Camden 14-0 Los Gatos 6-30 .... . . .Leigh 14-14 .... ...Del Mar 7-46 Saratoga Blackford's Opponent's Total: Total: 82 161 SEASON'S RECORD: 4-4-1 touchdown. A pitchback from Bill Dunham to Jackson provided the second tally. The Brave de- fense sparkled throughout the game. The Braves were never to win again without Dan Jackson and were first set back by the Leigh Longhorns on a wet field 30-6. The Braves rallied to within 6 points of the Longhorns in the third quarter, but their hopes were wiped out when Brave Larry Kelly dropped a Steve Terry pass in the Longhorns' end zone. Steve Terry completed 14 out of 31 passes but the Braves could not pull the game out of the fire. Del Mar managed to tie the Braves 14-14, capitalizing on Blackford's errors. Steve Terry hit halfback Jeff Miller for the first score and set up a second tally via a 45 yard pass play to end Jim Fieldman. Bill Dunham brought the ball over for a score. A stirring pre-game speech by Coach George Pesut wasn't enough on Thanksgiving Day as the Saratoga Falcons wiped the Braves 46-7. Without ace Brave fullback Bill Dunham, who was hurt in the first quarter and stayed out the remainder of the game, the Braves couldn't manage more than one touchdown. Braves fans remained loyal throughout the season John Bellante carries the ball against Saratoga. c.
