t e yecvi cue ie 6 cuwztf. Many changes occur during one school year; this year was no exception. Breakin’ is one craze that has drastically altered lifestyles at Blackfoot Junior High in several ways. This new dance style and the resulting fashions made a dramatic visual impact this year. Computers, another recent trend, made a big change in recording attendance, grade processing, and class scheduling. This modernized view of the future resulted in new class offerings which will affect our lives. Some of these changes are reflected throughout the annual which we hope you will enjoy. Equus is your ticket to the past in the future. Breakin' transformed many students and activities at Blackfoot Junior High. As students strutted down the halls, they saw moon walking, body waves. King Tut, and poplocking performed by various break dancers. This developed into break-dancing contests each Friday at noon in the gym. Those who were not in the spotlight as performers enjoyed watching the dancers' routines. New styles born from this dance fever were evident and included parachute pants, pedal pushers, zipper shirts, and fluorescent colors. Although fads are modified each year, clothing styles this year seemed to take on a much more drastic change in apparel for both boys and girls. Another alteration in lifestyle came from the computerized attendance system at our school. Teachers fill in computer sheets for absent students every hour each day. These are then scanned and recorded by computer. In addition to the new record-keeping process, a 90% attendance rule was implemented. This year we were allowed only nine absences in each semester. Following the tenth absence, students were required to appeal for credits. Grading procedures and class scheduling were both processed by computer as well. After all the information for grades was assembled and scanned, the report cards were printed at our own school. Class changes and registration information was programmed by computer making the scheduling much easier and faster for everyone. Students benefited from these modifications as well as from the changes in class offerings. Several classes were added to help us keep pace with the present and prepare us for the challenge of the future. Art III, Computer Literacy, French and Spanish helped to improve upon past traditions to make our education for the future better. We, as annual staff members, hope you enjoy your annual this year more than ever before. We made many changes in the yearbook. For the first time, the annual has a name - Equus (the Greek word meaning horse). We also included a large and exciting Student Life section. We have a theme for the annual this year: “there’s no stopping us;” we’re breaking the traditions. As the theme clearly indicates, we have changed in various areas at Blackfoot Junior High. We hope the modifications of the annual are improve- ments. We feel confident, however, that these changes will be continued in the years to come establishing new traditions. - Editor, Lori Carpenter
