BRONCO 1972 BLACKFOOT HIGH SCHOOL Blackfoot, Idaho In These Changing Times, Many Things Endure. Editor: Diane Blessinger Sponsor: Mary Lee Webber 1972 Was A Time Of Change Throughout its history. Blackfoot High school has been a continuously changing school. The size of enrollment is an example In 1912. BHS consisted of only 190 students and 10 faculty members, whereas, this year we had 1225 students and 60 faculty members As we came to school in the fall we were under new leadership Mr Vaughn Hawkes was our new principal with Mr Garth Belnap as vice-principal We also started a new form of student government and a new dress code With the death of I T Rip” Stoddard in October. Mr Spence Gardner became the new school district superintendent. The year of 1971 1972 can be summarized by the words of Thomas Carlyle Today is not yesterday We ourselves change How then, can our works and thoughts, if they are always to be the fittest, continue always the same? Change, indeed is painful, yet ever needful; and if memory have its force and worth so also has hope. Left Student Government Above Vice-Principal. Garth Belnap Below Pam Jensen Principal. Vaughn Hawkes. and Gloria Rose But, Many Things Endure. The students of Blackfoot High School soon discovered this year was a time of change Although, there were many things that endured As the students arrived each morning the building was still the same, changing little from day to day Throughout the day it was discovered that there was still a need to conquer each subject Therefore, many students were caught in the act of studying in various places For the one that conquered was the one that endured High school life wasn't all work and no play Before, during, and after school, hours were filled with various activities Clubs, dances, and sports played an important role in a student's social life Learning new ideas and meeting new people has remained the purpose of Blackfoot High School Below Robbin McCrory demonstrates his fantastic jump shot Above Jeff Thomas and Herb Bolin exhibit their friendship Left Danny Atkens models his attire for the Freshmen Welcome Below Kirk Hone carries Jams Scon to class Right Jeff Lass enioys watermelon provided by the Girls Federation Above Kathy Buxton tries to decide if she should leave or not Below Pam Jensen demonstrates her marching ability TABLE OF CONTENTS Academics 8 Student Achievements 18 Co-Curricular 28 Organizations 64 Social Life 82 Sports 98 Classes 138 Administration 196 Ads 210 7 mmk w-ssi WS 'ahmw1 s- ''v--afW iAW • ,. «fe i « ; ;m-. German and Spanish French is taught by Miss Sophia Lambrou Miss Lambrou said. I think the knowledge of a second language is very necessary for many different reasons One is for International travel In June of 1972 Miss Lambrou took a trip to France German is taught by Mr Horace Kearsley He said. German and English are related If you start learning a certain language you should make it a habit and learn it until you can speak it well. Spanish is taught by Mr Gordon Woolley Mr Woolley said. There are lots of people in this area who are Spanish; they form an important part of our society so we should learn something about their language and culture These classes. German. French, and Spanish use the Language Lab to give the teachers a chance to listen to each student individually, without having them do it in front of the whole class which is sometimes harder III and IV year Spanish students spent 9 weeks reading a short story about a man from England who went to Argentina and became a Gaucho' in modern days He was old and a little senile In the book he dies m the end So when the book was finished the class had a funeral for the book The inscription on the cake says El Gaucho Smith is dead at last 13 Bookkeeping class considers the problem of keeping accurate records Business Provides For Future Jobs Mr Moss, prosecuting attorney, speaks on the difference between crimes and torts Business is one of the few courses in BHS that prepares students for jobs right out of high school The Office Practice class, which lasts two class hours, gives the girls the experience of working in a mock office. The mam branches of Agriculture include, crop farming, dairying ranching, poultry raising, and fruit growing Mr Mortensen instructs Kevin Webster on some techniques of welding Oral Work Places High Throughout the English sections at BHS there is a special emphasis placed upon oral work There are too few who take speech in the first place. said Mrs. Owens. These oral projects range from book reports to oral reports on subjects relating to the novels studied Mrs Thompson tried out a new way to teach vocabulary words Each group was assigned words and presented them in a different way everyday Many original ideas were used effectively, these ranging from skits to games, and crosswords to demonstrations Mrs Martsch’s classes used several films, including one on Ray Bradbury, two on communism and a film on Africa In Mrs. Martsch’s college prep course Mrs. Barbara Hoge spoke and showed slides on her trip to Russia Mrs Martsch said that she felt that English connected with the other subjects because the time periods of the novels coincide with periods in history Research papers also play an important part in Jr English It is required for students to write one research paper a year Many panels are used in this department especially concerning the different novels used throughout the year Some are conducted in a debate fashion. This just goes to show that we had ONE whole week without activities this year Mrs Gardner and her class don’t look too lively at 8 00 A M Mrs BradfiekJ gets a laugh out of her English class Something most teachers find hard to do Mrs Kofoed conducts another exciting frosh English class The class isn't REALLY sleeping Rick Gradner listens tentatively as Mrs Thompson teaches that stuff everybody hates called GRAMMAR Kaydeen Tsukamoto and Carla Bun were winners in a English composition contest Bilhe Haynes. On July 13 and 14. the band marched and played at the mall by request of the city of Calgary Departure from Calgary by no means spelled the end of the trip's activities, since Waterton was still on the itinerary While in Waterton they stayed at the Kootenai Lodge were they were met by Blackfoot residents. David Price. President. Doug Dance and Secretary. Susan Quinn Freshmen got off to a good start Some people wonder just what being a freshman is like Although they never know exactly unless they become one for a year, an explanation might help Since the best explanation would come from a now-existing freshman, we interviewed some for their opinions One freshman put it this way. Your freshman year is for learning about High School and finding out what you want to do when you come back the next year as a sophomore Another view was. Being a freshman means toppling from the ruling class of eighth grade to the bottom of the ladder and trying to work your way up to the top again Another question we put forth to the class of 75 was. 'What do you think of your own class as freshmen?'' Some, of course, were very enthusiastic while others were very disappointing Most answers were ones of shrugs and. We are okay. I guess. So although the class of '75 has not gotten off to a roaring start. 1975 might turn out to be a very good year after all Freshmen class sponsors are from left to right. Wesley Patterson. I really thought that the Juniors had a lot of class spirit Maybe we didn't always paint signs or give presentations to the team, but we supported them at the games.
