Who dusts the desks and sweeps the floors And closes all the windows and doors? Who picks up papers on the lawn When off to our classes we have gone? Who smiles at everyone of us As we leave school and board the bus? And now as we ALL have to go — Let's thank and remember POP and JOE MR. JOE KAMPHAUS “Joe Resting ? ? ? BOARD OF EDUCATION The School Board, working under a general grant of authority, serves as the governing body of B.H.S. Although these men are not a familiar sight at our school, they play a very important role in its progress. These men, serving the community without pay, are elected because of their active interest in the field of education. We, the students of Blackfoot High School, are glad to have this opportunity of expressing our appreciation of the work done for Blackfoot and its citizens by the Board of Education. SCHOOL BOARD viewing new building. On Thursday, February 18, the students and faculty of B.H.S. were saddened by the news of the death of Super- intendent Evans. Mr. Evans was instantly killed by the accidental dis- charge of his rifle. IN MEMORIAM CLIFFORD C. EVANS 1908—1954 ADMINISTRATION C. C. EVANS Superintendent Under the guidance of Clifford C. Evans the past twelve years have seen B.H.S. grow into a modern, up-to-date high school. With the completion of our new school Superinten- dent Evans has realized a dream come true. He has solved the many problems facing the faculty and students very efficiently and has done a fine job in guiding and maintaining the smooth operation of our Blackfoot Public Schools. We—as students and as teachers—owe Mr. Evans a vote of thanks. KARL FERRIN Principal Mr. Ferrin has served our school as principal for six years. During this time he has had the responsibility of directing and supervising the work of the teachers as well as governing the student body. Needless to say, this has often involved the best of diplomacy and wisdom. Good leadership implies good relations with the student body, the faculty, and the parents. We feel that he has been a good leader. “They have seen the way we mast go.” A. R. For a week or so our time was filled just learning our new class schedules, becoming acquainted with the school building, and adjusting to new regulations. Then came fatal I-Day (Initiation Day)! We survived—in fact our brightly marked faces and silly costumes were fun. Having to wear “onion necklaces” was not bad when we learned that even the veterans suffered. However, we are at last in full swing. Studies and activities kept us busily occupied. We are proud of our class and have high hopes that it will make its mark. On the half-way mark, that is. We the class.of ’56 are finally on the threshold of being upperclassmen. As we now look back on our first two years in high school it seems only yesterday that we entered as “green little freshmen.” Our life in high school has been on the whole very enjoyable. We have shared experiences with friends we may never see again. As we leave the old building may we always remember the things we have done here and link them with the things we may do in the new school. Entering the last part of our Book of High School, we shall make the most of the opportunities which will be ours. As a class, it is remarkable how many have participated from the very first in school activities which will make our high school days “treasured memories.” CLASS OFFICERS MARILYN LEWIS Secretary HAROLD SHOEMAKER President BETTY CORY Representative MIKE KIRKHAM Vice President SOPHOMORES Alldaffer, Glen Anderson, Carla Jean Bingham, Margene Bithell, Gladwyn Arave, Carol Atwood, Fontella Bohleen, Melvin Bowman, Jerald Babby, Lloyd Baird, Richard Byington, Bert Carlson, Richard ? ? Greta Wright, Stenna Young, Young, Young, DeWayne Merlin Richard SOPHOMORES We have reached the half way mark. In so many ways this seems to be a turning point in our lives. The gay, carefree days of our Freshman and Sopho- more years are behind us. Now our work in high school begins to be more meaningful. We are almost breathless as we think: “So little time ahead ... so much to do.” Too, this is our good-bye year to the Old Building. We are thrilled at the prospect of being in the beautiful, roomy new one, but we are just a little sad too. “Old Building, you hold many happy memories; we shall always treasure them.” NOON HOUR—Waiting for doors to reopen. JUNIOR CLASS CLASS OFFICERS GARY VANDERWOOD Vice President MARSHA GLOVER Representative BILL NOICE President SUSAN WIXOM Secretary For us, school began years ‘n’ years ago—but now that we are actually looking into our last year of high school, the time suddenly seems very short. We realize now that we are close to that time when for many of us “School Days—dear old Golden Rule Days” will be only memories. So as Juniors we’ve tried to make up for lost time by crowding our days and nights with all the activities available to us. Jubilee, chorus, band, debate, drama, football, and basketball, and most of the clubs had their share of Juniors participating in a valuable manner. Our officers were: Bill Noice, Gary Vanderwood, Susan Wixom, and Marsha Glover. Mrs. Kotter and Frank Exhevarria served as sponsors. Two memorable class activities were the assembly presented in the spring and the elaborate Junior Prom. So we turn our gaze now to the place we shall soon fill—as Seniors in B.H.S. —which place we hope to fill with credit to ourselves and our leaders. “And if we choose the best in life, Our hearts must strengthen for the strife.” JUNIORS Dorothy Alexander Arrell Allen Vincent Allen Jeanine Anderson Max Ansola Buddy Bailey Joyce Barrus Joyce Baxter Edith Benham Lowell Benson Connie Bergh Carolyn Bingham Louise, Boyce Rea Boyce Millie Brangham JUNIORS Dorothy Brower Boyd Brown Edna Burrell Monte Call Helen Capener Stephen Cathey Larry Chaffin Terry Chamberlain La Rae Christenson Douglas Cobbley ADVANCED MATH—(a+bt a-l )! We shall never forget this day . . . the beginning of our journey through the Land of Learning. It took courage because we knew we would encounter many difficulties, but with much splashing, laughter, and fun we waded across Initiation Stream. As we traveled over the Freshman Plains we were confronted with many problems, but there were more difficult problems yet to come. We were gay as we picked the varied colored Latin and English flowers. We found the rocks of Algebra and Science hard to surmount but the guides kept beckoning and prodding us onward. The Sophomore Hills, being rugged with Geometry Brush, were a challenge to us and we sometimes became discouraged. We were anxious to get across this land. When we had completed this part of our journey, we realized that we had reached the half way mark in our journey and were eagerly anticipating a successful passage over the Mountainous Junior Pass. As we started over these mountains, we were filled with renewed vigor and a determination to reach the end. This was not altogether disagreeable, for the pass was beautiful and we enjoyed our comradeship. We stopped occasionally to refresh ourselves in beautiful streams such as the Prom. At last we reached Senior Summit. Journeying on was easier now because of the nearness of our goal. Doug gets his football uniform. The F.F.A. is the largest farm boy organization in the world. It is a national organization of boys studying vocational agriculture, and was designed to supplement training opportunities for boys who are striving for a business in farming. We compete in our own chapter and with other schools in parliamentary pro- cedure contests, public speaking contests, and livestock and dairy judging contests. The boys who rate highest may attend the state contests at Moscow. Each year two delegates are elected to represent our chapter at the state convention. The chapter also provides various types of recreation. A few are the “Sadie Hawkins Dance” sponsored with the F.H.A., a roller skating party, and the annual Parent and Son Banquet. Blackfoot had the largest representation at the Pre-legislative Conference held at Pocatello, which showed that youth is interested in the state government. We also sent delegates to the Youth Legislature held in Boise on April 2 and 3. Our program for this year included various social (Basketball, Dancing, Movies, etc.) as well as religious activities I Speeches and studies of several religions). Repre-enU FuUmer. ... iJ-net Haa‘ ’ Sena‘or; .1, Gover- All Set for Boise! “There was a lot of good work and very little sectional or party squabbling,” said Edson Deal, Idaho’s real-life lieutenant gov- ernor, who supervised activities in the youth Senate. For special praise he singled out his own Y M C A counter- part, Lt. Gov. Alice Schindler of Blackfoot, who steered many of the bills on the Senate floor. “She’s one of the sharpest young ladies in Idaho,” Deal said. Senate debate was hottest on the legislative pay raise bill sponsored by Sens. Garth Han- son and Donna Hamilton and Reps. Lenet Hadley and David Maxey of Blackfoot. Blackfoot Pressure Tabled twice by the Senate, the bill was finally brought up for a vote by pressure from the Blackfoot forces. But the opposition, spearheaded by Gor- don Harm of Meridian, stalled off a final roll call on the bill pntil adjournment time, thus it died. On April 2, delegates from forty-five Idaho high school groups met in the House of Representatives chamber, of the Idaho State Capitol, in joint session. The dignity of the occasion was enhanced when the men who hold the highest offices in our state marched solemnly into the chamber and took their usual places before the assembled youth “law-makers.” These state officials were introduced, after which the oath of office was administered by Idaho Supreme Court Justice, C. J. Taylor. Secretary of State, Ira H. Masters presented certificates of election to the youth members. A most impressive message was then delivered by Idaho’s gover- nor, the Hon. Len Jordan, followed by an equally impressive speech by the Youth Governor, Charles Hervey of Boise. With this beginning a two day session of the 1954 Youth Legislature was underway. Here we learned how representative government func- tions. B.H.S. delegates had prepared four bills. Three of these were passed by both houses and later signed by the Governor. All who had a chance to attend the session consider it a most worthwhile experience. . . . from Salt Lake T ribune D E B A T E SEATED: John Cannon, Alice Schindler, Lenet Hadley, Eileen Taney, Dale Baxter, Layne Hahn, Roger DeMordaunt. The 1954 debate activities of B.H.S. were the most successful in its history. With a surplus of outstanding debaters we started by winning the Ricks College Invitational meet. Then Dale Baxter and Lloyd Jensen continued their winning ways by taking first in the Weber College Invitational Meet for the second straight year. This meet is the largest invitational in the nation. At the district tournament is Pocatello the Boys’ Team consisting of Dick Gibson, Roger DeMordaunt, Dale Baxter, and Lloyd Jensen, took first place as did Alice Schindler and Janet Hoover in the girls’ division. None of these teams lost any debates. At the state meet in Moscow, Blackfoot again took double honors winning the state championship in the girls’ division and tying for first in the men’s division. B.H.S. set a new record in receiving every point possible in the meet. Layne Hahn, John Cannon, Lloyd Jensen, and Dale Baxter won first without losing a debate. Roger DeMordaunt won first in both Original Oratory and Boys’ Extemp. Alice Schindler received second in Girls’ Extemp, and Dick Gibson third in Boys’ Extemp. As a result of this year’s wins, we have qualified five debaters for the national tournament at Greensburg, Pennsylvania, and we have acquired seven brand new trophies to present to the school. The Kiwanis Club presented the debate class with a trophy for the most outstanding organization in B.H.S. for 1954.
