Text from Pages 1 - 128 of the 1986 volume:

The senior class dedicates the 1986 Blackquill to our parents Parents are important people, influencing their children's lives through their actions. There have been many times when we have thought of giving up but they have given us the gentle push it takes to make us work a little harder and succeed. What we re really trying to say, Moms and Dads, is thank you so much for all you've done; we love you. This year’s Blackquill is dedicated to our parents because they: . have always been there for me when I needed them and helped and gave me hope when I was down. — Lori Bauer . . have always been there when I've needed them, supported what I've done, and have been caring and con- cerned about me. — Brian Benson . they understand the problems I face as a student and in growing up. — John Blanchard through out the years of my life, my parents have given me the direction that was needed, helped me through the hard times and taught me much more than I could have ever learned on my own. — Gary Bodien . are supporting and they always offer me some type of constructive criticism that helps me to better myself. — Kyle Dick have always stood behind my decisions and active involvement with school. — Alex Gerdes are supportive, understanding and the people who have had the most influence in my life. — Grace Gullette have given a lot and it's a way of giving something back to them by showing our appreciation this way. — Lynn Hentges have given me a strong background and the necessary tools to go out and build a life of my own. I thank them very much. — Ken Kalvig because they like you even when your dog doesn't. Let me tell you, it's RUFF! — Becky McLaughlin are special, easy-going, easy to laugh and tell my troubles to, and they are the ones who make me come to this place and they made me what I am today. — Lisa Patnode ... I feel they are understanding about the problems I have and also relate to me. They always make me feel good about what I do. — Michael Parker care. They are there to talk to and give me advice. — Julie Pomp have backed me in each of my high school activities, as well as my being a financial burden. — Jeff Schmit are the ones who made me possible, and boy, are they lucky! — Steve Schwarzlander spoil me rotten and they deserve some recognition for their total lack of discipline. — Scott Sonnek are the most important people in my life. They have brought me up in the way that nobody else would do!! — LizTjepkes . always seem to understand that there are a few essentials in life, chiefly money, parties, and cars, and of course they make provisions for these with few questions asked. — Anthony Vorderbruggen Advertisements Advertisements Prophesies Advertise Over the years Blackduck Schools have grown and improved. Since the turn of the century there have been many new additions to the original building, the new library science building being the most recent. As construction moved from laying the foundation to the first day the library was in use, the annual staff was struck by the similarity between the construction and the senior class. The construc- tion, while in the foundation stages, is a lot like the elementary education Blackduck students receive. The junior high experience is similar to construction of the first floor. Of course, the second story represents the senior high years. The senior class has grown and changed over the years from a fascination with Barbie dolls and Tonka trucks to thoughts of college and life on their own. They have traveled from Sesame Street and Walt Disney movies to Days of Our Lives and Rambo. The construction of the new library science building has given this year's seniors something to think about. Building, Growing and 4 Improving Blackduck Public Schools grew out of community schools in the Blackduck area Three of those schools are pictured here. Pennington and Tenstrike are pictured on the facing page. The center photo and the photo above are both of the Blackduck School. The first is one of the school when it opened and the second is during the 1950's. The photo directly below is a photo of the old Hines elementary school. 5 BLACK DUCK — A half-dozen nak d faces at Blackduck High Sd ;ol attest to the fact that students there were motivated enough by a “You Bet Your Beard” contest to gather more than a ton of food for Bemidji Community Food Shelf. Five teachers and one student sacrificed their beards during aa assembly Monday after- having promised to shave their hairy visages if Blackduck High School Student Council reached its gdal of collecting 1.001 pounds of food. The prospect of watching six men lose their beards apparently inspirited the students indeed, for by Friday, the total reached 2.680 pounds. “Some of the teachers I talked to after the project got started thought their beards would be pretty safe. Ken Kalvig. student council president, said. When a ton of donations started pouring in last week, though, the bearded men started sweating. “I think it s great because without those people donating their beards. I don't think the students would have been as motivated. he said. “It’s a good project to do for needy people in the area, especially at Christmas time, when some families might not have as much food as other people do. said Kalvig, adding the project also was a way to boost school spirit and pride. About 30 student council mem- bers in grades seven through 12 oromoted the project, organizing :lass competitions for added in- rentiv.e. When the local barber. Kenny Gustafson, took a trimmer to the eards. the students “really went luts.” Kalvig said. Some students, n the thrill of the moment, started chanting. “Shave their hair off. too!” The objects of their chants were teachers Steve Bechtold. Jim Nissen. Jack Penn. Ward Merrill and Daryl Deno. who dressed as Santa Gaus for the event. The lone student a nong the shave-ees was Jasen Hendricks. Even though I'd become kind of attached to my beard — I think I'd had it for about 12 years — I was glad to see the kids do this well. Merrill, student council adviser, said. “The kids, of course, got a charge out of seeing us go through the shaving.” The last time Deno shaved his beard was several years ago. Merrill said. and. at that time, his young children thought he was their Uncle Marvin. Penn, a fixture at BHS with his long, long beard, promised to cut it only to half its length. “I’ve noticed it’s a lot colder, even in the building here, without the beard on.” Merrill said. Some people say the bare-faced Merrill looks older, some younger. The eighth-graders told him he looks like Captain Kangaroo without h:s beard, but someone else said he looks like Burt Reynolds. “That made me feel a lot better.” CD BET THEIR BEARDS — AND LOST!! Minneapolis Star and Tribune Wednesday January 8 1986 IB In Litchfield, Minnesota, about half of the student body was threatening to walk out, then fol- lowed up on their threat. The stu- dent body had drawn up a paper stating what they wanted. They were things that the administration thought were unthinkable to have in a public school. Principal Glen Lakes said that some were negotiable but others were not. Prin- cipal Lakes said he would like to see the students’ energy directed toward more worthwhile things and used our food drive as an example. He said that he would have been more impressed if the protest had been for something more worth- while, like for Nuclear Disarmament the rights in South Africa. USA TODAY - TUESDAY, DECEMBER 24, 1985 • 5A MINNESOTA Perplch • announced. ... Per- plch said If he’s re-elected In '86, It’ll be his last term. ... BLACKDUCK — High School students collected 2,680 lbs. of food for poor, but 5 teachers, 1 student lost beards. They promised to shave If 1,000 lbs. of food were collected. o c o 7 BEA TEACHER of the YEAR This year Mrs. Donna Collison, one of the kindergarten teachers, was selected as the Blackduck Education Association (BEA) Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Collison has been teaching kindergarten at Blackduck since 1969 and says it has been a rewarding challenge. Mrs. Collison believes that although teaching is a difficult career, it is all worthwhile if there is just one little smile, one little hug, or one kind word. She thinks that all children should be able to say — “Hey, I'm OK! The BEA Teacher of the Year award is given to a teacher who has at least a baccalaureate degree or a license to teach from the state of Minnesota. The teacher who is chosen is the representative of the many educators who influence our lives daily. The main purpose of the award is to express the appreciation for all of the outstanding men and women in the education field. The teacher s name is then nominated for State and National Teacher of the Year. CONGRATULATIONS MRS. COLLISON!! 8 FACULTY GUIDING THE GROWTH G. Kjellberg Superintendent G. Zirbes T. Sorquist Asst Principal Elem. Principal This year we have watched as our school has grown through the addition of a new library and classroon building. But the most important growth which is made in a school is growth by the students. A modern school building and a staff of excellent teachers using the most proven teaching methods and materials provide the best setting for students to grow through discovery — discovery of themselves and the people and world around them. As the class of 1986 prepares to graduate, we can reflect on the growth they have shown thus far, and an- ticipate their continued growth as they walk confidently toward life in the 21st century. T. Wednesday was the start of Homecoming week and nerds were crawling out of the woodwork on Nerd Day. Thursday, Maroon and Gold Day found students showing their spirit by dressing in BHS’s school colors. Friday saw the start of Security Day with some students imper- sonating Rambo while others regressed and wandered the halls clutching their favorite stuffed animal. Friday night the bon- fire, coronation of King and Queen, and the Homecoming dance took place. First was the bonfire near the football field. The cheering of the cheerleaders formed a nice background to the football team’s chorus line. The bonfire was a landmark event and considered to have been a great success. Following the bonfire, Mike Parker and Kim Burney were crowned Homecom- ing King and Queen. Other candidates were Brian Benson and Becky McLaughlin, Steve Schwarzlander and Lynn Hentges. Freshman attendants were Kim Patnode and Mark Mistic. Sophomore and Junior at- tendants were Penny Erickson and Wayne Johnson, Nancy Nesset and Duane Yerbich. QUEEN CANDIDATES: B. McLaughlin L. Hentges K. Burney KING CANDIDATES: M. Parker S. Schwarzlander B. Benson Monday saw the continuation of the split week with Sweats and Sports Day as the jocks and sports fanatics invaded the school. Tuesday, the final day of Homecoming demonstrated BHS’s class as students showed their style by dress- ing up in their best attire. The team was victorious, beating Pine River by a score of 20-18. 65 A Homecoming to Remember Three raving beauties Where’d they all go? “Happy Days” 66 THE BEST YEAR Back: A. Gerdes, K. The cast and crew worked long and hard to make the play a success. It was well received by the community as a whole. Congratulations to Mr. Houseman and the other cast and crew members! 86 INERS 87 THE TALKERS Back row: A. Fitch, K. Gustafson, B. Grundmeier, S. Hentges. 3rd row: P. Kruger, P. Mathews, G. Last year we saw our Speech team come home with a regional title of first place. Most of last year's team has returned again this year to (hopefully) maintain Blackduck as the Region 8A champion. The speech team is looking for new talent. It doesn't matter what grade you are in, anyone from seventh to twelfth grade is welcome. Just the name Speech sounds scary, but it really isn't. It's a great way to get out and meet peo- ple from other schools and have a lot of fun do- ing it!! The speech team has two outstanding coaches in Mr. Kovar and Mrs. Moon. These two people spend an enormous amount of time preparing for contests. For all the time and ef- fort you put in, the speech team would like to thank you. FROM THE SPRING OF ’85 THE REGION 8A CHAMPION TEAM! CANDIDA Back row: K. Hartman, Mr. Kovar, J. Krabbenhoft, L. Sorquist, J. Jensen. Front row: S. Hentges, M. Tracy, R. Grundmeier. The play CANDIDA is a turn of the century work by George Bernard Shaw. It is a drama about a lovesick young poet, Eugene, and his desire for Candida, the preacher’s wife. At first the Reverend is amused, but as he begins to doubt Candida's love, he becomes greatly angered and the poet becomes the strong suitor. The Reverend realizes his weakness and Can- dida gives strength to her husband. Candida makes the poet realize he can't have her and teaches him about love. Mr. Kovar, director for the past eight years, says the most rewarding thing about his job is seeing the written words come to life. He feels that the greatest challenge is getting the actors to assume the roles of the characters in the play and divest themselves of their own real life personalities. The judges look for certain qualities in competitive drama. Did the play bring across what the author had written? Were the characters believable? Was the stage set up and designed appropriately? Was the movement of the cast on stage, which is called blocking, natural? Did the costumes suit the characters portrayed? 89 KNOWLEDGE BOWL ’85 Standing: Scott Sonnek, Jane Gullette, Mr. Lorenson, Susie Freyholtz, Gary Morris, Kelly Randall Seated: Willie Johnson, Grace Gullette, Chris Pfeifer, Peter Hentges. Blackduck's Knowledge Bowl teams, under the guidance of advisor Mr. Lorenson, traveled to McIntosh for the McIntosh Invitational. The teams did quite well, bringing first and second place honors home At the Region Tournament, the second team placed thirteenth out of 40 teams, while the first team captured the championship trip to state. Due to a conflict, not all members of the team were able to attend the state competition, but those who went cap- tured thirteenth place. Congratulations to those on the team and Mr. Lorenson! The Blackduckl- ing staff is responsi- ble for informing the community about all school activities; from clubs and organiza- tions to coverage for the sports teams. The staff faces a continual challenge every week to meet the deadlines. Mrs. Zea stated that while this year's staff is younger than most there have been fewer problems with deadlines not being met.
