Text from Pages 1 - 140 of the 1985 volume:

I The class of 1985 is proud to dedicate the Blackquill to Mr. Jack Penn. In 1968 Mr. Penn graduated from Mankato High School. He graduated from Mankato State University in 1972 with majors in math and chemistry. Since the fall of that year, he has been employed at Blackduck High. Mr. Penn lives south of Black- duck on South Twin Lake with his wife Nancy and daughter Lindsey. He can generally be found outdoors hunting, fishing, or working on his house. Other activities include card games, brain-teasers, such as Trivial Pursuit, or matching his wits against one of his students in backgammon or chess. For 10 of his 13 years at Blackduck High he has been working with computers, and since his employ- ment, he has been in our math depart- ment. The seniors would like to thank him for his patience and understanding. oAnyffi but Trivi a. f The Administration, Faculty and Staff of Blackduck High School present with pride T ■ - IXovaCf ’tnAf Lj jCindeCC Saxa. cJlic aAden d enea J-utcf en cMaxui zMaxtin .ancttz zRconoids : I f icfiazf ?aznni±£ou7i£i oxann oc(i£.moclz Jliia tScfiaffex J £.nnis £cfi imam ti Scoit £cliu7axzCancUi M n Scfiivexiimke f'JocLj Suj£clIj£ig Uim cS v£ Uj£ tJuCic aStfdo 2 cnnii 27 ixtault WISH THERESA WERE HERE! And wt cften wondered how As we returned to school each year I remember us saying: Wish Theresa were here. —Kelly J. Mastin The class of 1985 will fondly remember Theresa Light. She would be graduating with us if not for a fatal bout with spinal meningitis in 1979. She was born on August 19, 1966 at Cedar Rapids, Iowa and then moved to Tenstrike in 1979. The class of '85 will always remember the slumber parties she gave us, and all the other good times we had together. Her out-going, fun-loving attitude made school a better place for us and encouraged us to do the best we could. D. Balton G. Bodien K. Dick M. J. Beighley M. Coburn Dirkes D. Fisher V. Fletcher S. Students from across Minnesota organize the various levels and branches of government during an intensive week of learning by participating. A cam- paign and election result in the selection of a governor and other officers who serve out their week- long term, at the Minnesota State Capitol in the House and Senate chambers. The Blackduck American Legion select a representa- tive for Boys State follow- ing individual interviews while BHS teachers vote for the Girls State dele - gate. Academic and social abilities play an import- ant part in the selection process. Choosing one Blackduck student for each assembly is not an easy task and those who do finally represent BHS in St.Paul have earned a very special honor indeed. 47 Fall Homecoming King: Tom Brown Queen: Debbie Nipp Bobby Klug Pam Hentges Heath Yearling Tammy Erickson 48 One of '.he goals of this year's Student Council was to make the 1985 Snow Week bigger and better than ever before. To do so the Student Council began planning two months before Snow Week was to begin. Numerous ideas were discussed and the Student Council tried to pick the ones that the stud- ents would enjoy most. The theme and slogan, Return to Camelot , which was dipicted on the buttons the Student Council sold, was adopted for the 1985 Snow Week. Many of the week's activities tied in with this slogan. The week started out with Monday being Camoflage Day. After school the Decorate-A-Hall Contest was held with the sophomores coming away with first prize. Snow Sculpturing, which started over the weekend, continued on Monday as well. Tuesday was Celebrity Day with the students dressing up as their fav- orite Celebrity. The students were honored to have Mr. Guy Doud speak at an assembly program that morning. After Mr. Doud's speech he received a standing ovation along with many ccmpliments and handshakes. Wednesday the halls of Blackduck High were invaded by students dressed as nerds. That day also marked the beginning of noon hour sleigh rides which continued through Friday. so Students and Teachers switched roles as the students tried their hand at teaching a class. Thursday was Occupation Day with a pep-fest held that morning. At the pep-fest students were entertained with a skit by the King and Queen can- didates. The cheerleaders performed a special routine and the first grad- ers did a special number for the High School. Awards were handed out for the Snow Sculpturing Contest. The eighth grade won first place while a special award was given to the peo- ple who built a magnificent Ice Cas- tle. Friday was Maroon and Gold Day and the coronation took place that afterno- on. Greg Gruel and Carrie Kjellberg were crowned King and Queen and Mike Todavich and Janie Sorheim were crowned Prince and Princess. That evening a Large turnout of the students danced the night away with the sounds of Power Play. Many students participated in the week's activities and the Student Coun- cil was complimented on an outstanding job. In addition, the School Board passed a motion commending Mr. Merril, Student Council Advisor, for a job done well. Mrs. Pat Zea explains, 'The Blackduckling' not only informs the public of school events, it also provides students with experience in writing different articles. The Blackduckling challenges the student and advisor alike. Being advisor for the Duckling can, at times, be the cause of grey hair, reports Advisor Zea. The 12 students scoring high- est on a series of tests separated into two teams. Although it took some time to get used to the rules, the teams did well in re- gional competition. Black- duck's first team took first in regions and the second team took fourth, one point away from going to state competition. Talk About Class! For his remarkable contributions as instructor, coach, and class advisor, Mr. Sonnek was honored as the 1984 BEA Teacher of the Year ! 81 MARIT RIST HAUGER is from L renskog, Norway. Marit is staying with Mr. Mrs. John Barclay and has so far enjoyed her stay in America. When asked what she likes best about Blackduck, she replied, People. They've all been so very nice to me. Marit has one brother, 22, who presently lives in Duluth, and one sister, 20, who lives in L renskog. Marit misses her family the most, but misses her dog, too! The first thing she plans on doing when she returns home is to tell her family all about her experiences in America and to eat Norwegian goat cheese. She says that the school system in Norway has much more freedom than BHS has, but Marit likes the students and the teachers at Blackduck, however. She participated in basketball and enjoys Phy. Ed. class the most. WE ALL WISH MARIT THE BEST!! Exchange Students TERRY NGAI is a foreign exchange studetn from Hong Kong that is staying wtih Mr. Mrs. Dennis Page. Terry has one brother, 23, and one sister, 21, that both attend Canadian colleges. The first thing Terry plans on doing when he gets home is to tell his family about his experiences in America. He likes the people in Blackduck because everyone seems to know everyone else and the people are so nice to me. Terry says the school system in Hong Kong is very different from BHS. In Hong Kong, says Terry, we have to wear uniforms and keep our hair short. Terry misses his family the most, but misses his friends also. He likes the teachers at BHS because, as he says, You can really get to know the teachers here better because they are so friendly. He enjoyed playing on the basketball team and likes bookeeping the best. GOOD LUCK TERRY!! 82 83 YEARBOOK ERS! Row 1: S. Sonnek, B. Grundmeier, K. Randall, T. Holmgren, S. Koebernick, L. Ford, R. Pierrot and Columbine portrayed the frustration experi- enced by intellectuals with the trivial nonsense they are faced with daily. Thyrsis and Corydon represented everyday citizens. They are maneuvered into a broken relationship by Cothurnus, the Masque of Tragedy. The play placed first in sub- district competition and third in district. It was also presented to the BHS Jr. and Sr. High. Thanks, hr. Kovar, we had a great time! Everyone says triends aren t rorever But we know better Because our friendship will last and last We will watch the days and years pass Look at how long we've been friends Our friendship will never end We've been friends for so long That people wonder how much longer this can go on. People will never rest Until we've passed their test They want us to end what we have made But if I lost you, I'd never be the same When will people understand about what we've got? Don't they see that we've got a lot? Maybe they will understand — If they can....
